It has been said before, we have seen it, hear it in all types of Rock documentals which claim to be the superior truth. I´m talking of course of those ALBUMS. Those albums that are nto only good, not only masterpieces, but the ones that define and capture the best of that decade with no room for mistake or failure. Now, I will say one album per decade, which I think, and I know many will agree, are probably the, not best, but more representative of each decade.

For the ´60 - The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper´s lonely hearts club band. I wouldn´t even say it´s The Beatles best (The white album is!) but I do think it might as well be the most important album in rock history. It´s literally the birth of prog, art rock, it pushed more boundaries than any other album had done till then, and anyone who is anyone took something from it.

For the ´70 - Pink Floyd - The dark side of the moon. Not the best album of the decade by a long shot, but probably the most popular one, and the one that allowed the bridge (even if just for a moment) for intelligent music and pop. The one album everybody has in their cd collection. Artistic yet aproachable to the masses, and with sound quality that still holds up to most albums (and wins) till this day.

For the ´80... this one is tricky, I honestly don´t know ... I mean it could be Michael Jacksons Thriller... but then again it just would take the cake for having been such a massive succes more than being influential, at least in a greater scale than just corporative pop... help here is welcomed.

For the ´90 - Radiohead - Ok Computer. This one is probably clearer for me than TDSOTM, it really is the jewl of the ´90. With sounds, compositions, approach that has influenced hundreds, this is the ´90 Sgt Peppers. Radiohead were already being considered the best rock band in the world and Ok Computer did nothing but turn down any doubt that was still around.

... and then we have the ´00´s... this decade is still not over, but is there already a clear winner here? Personally I don´t think there is one. Don´t get me wrong, I think there are some incredible album, some even better than the ones mentioned earlier, but I don´t think any of them has had the succes or the influence for being called "the album of the decade". The only one I think can maaaaybe take that title is, and I hate to sound like a fan boy,: Tool´s Lateralus. What do you think?

Of course you are more than welcomed to comment, disagree, and make a new list of your own. But try to keep some objectivity (no matter how incorrect this really is) when dropping names. I mean, I too love Van der Graaf Generator... but to give it to any of their albums for being the album of the decade is a bit incorrect jeje. Also, just for fun, let´s make our own personal full of subjectivity lists, where we put our favorite albums of each decade, no matter how obscure. Here goes mine.

For the ´60 - King Crimson - In the court of the Crimson King ... well d´ah!
For the ´70 - Yes - Close to the edge
For the ´80 - Kate Bush - The hounds of love
For the ´90 - Radiohead - Ok Computer jejeje
For the ´00 - Tool - Lateralus  ...jejej again

Fun topic, I was just thinking as I was listening to Phideaux's "Doomsday Afternoon" that it is surely my ablum of 2007 but starting to have consideration for Album of the Decade (personally of course) along c Marillion Marbles and Ayreon, "The Human Equation".  I'll find some album from 5 years ago in a few months that will be there as well no doubt.

As for other decades,  60s  Tommy by The Who
                                         70s The Lamb  Genesis
                                          80s Passion by Peter Gabriel
90s Unfolded like Staircase by Discipline

to the previous poster, you may not like Radiohead (I'm not a big fan either), put there's no disputing their popularity.  Whether OK Computer is good or not is a matter of taste. Guess you're not here to be polite.Wink

Well, you didn't specify Prog as a criterium, I can't narrow it down to one and my vote is VERY personal, so here goes:

1960s: King Beatles: In the Court of Sgt Pepper
1970's: Deep Tull's Thick as in Rock
1980s: Mekong F. Zappa: Civilization Phaze Zann
1990s: Psychotic Theater: Images and Mosquitos
2000s: Neal P. Tree: Fear of a Blank Testimony

Couldn't do better than that, sorry. Fun though  Smile

60s: High Tide - "Sea Shanties". a good contender would be "Phallus Dei" by Amon Düül 2. not the often quoted "In the Court of the Crimson King". "Lizard" is a much better album by King Crimson, but it is from the 70s
70s: very hard to say; so many good albums to choose from.  I'll pass
80s: again very hard, but for the opposite reason. perhaps Mother Gong's first part of the "Robot Woman" trilogy.
90s: "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Peter Hammill. no contender.
2000s: no idea yet; ask me at the end of 2009

I completely agree with what el bothy said about OK Computer. It was that album that really defined the time yet will still pushing music forward. They took all of the emotions and energy of the time and composed a masterpiece with it.

I can't possibly choose a subjective fav for each decade, as my post would be filled with about 5 choices for every "era" Tongue
I'll simply state my pick for the 2000s [warning: not "prog" ahead]:

For a long time it was Gorillaz' Demon Days (yes, I've been part of the bandwagon), but this month I have discovered what I deem the masterpiece of the new millenium:
Animal Collective's Strawberry Jam. The layers of sound and floaty/full atmosphere can probably best be described as "lush."

I'm glad you think so too! (Thanks for the acknowledgment - I don't seem to get much of itCry)

If I may digress from the topic for a moment, I'd just say that Strawberry Jam is definitely their best album I've heard - it's superior IMO to Here Comes The Indian and Sung Tongs - still have yet to hear Feels tho...
After listening to AC, I would definitely support their addition here at PA (prog related or maybe eclectic?)

I might add it would also be excellent to have some Flaming Lips love here (prog related or crossover) - also a lush band with (what sounds like) high-end production. Soft Bulletin is great, and I might go so far as to put Yoshimi in my top 5 of this decade...

Not my favorites in all the case, but my list would include:

  1. 60's: Being that the 60's was a decade of exploration and the starting point for the blending of influences, it has to be an album that combines thjose elements plus a touch of Psyche which IMO was the most representative genre of this years, so I'll go with "The Crazy World of Arhur Brown"
  2. 70's: The glorious decade of Symphonic Prog, I believe tghat an album which combines at least an epic (long track to be precise), good shorter ones, excellent lyrics and 100% Symphonic Prog sound, so I'll go with "Foxtrot"
  3.  80's: A decade in which the Prog elements combined clearly with more mainstream ones, has to be a Neo Prog, so my vote is for "Script for a Jester's Tear". A Neo Prog band for a Neo Prog decade, as a fact the most representative.
  4. 90's: The decade in which Symphonic resurrected, has to be a Scandinavian band, because that was the strongest region and my choice is "Gothic Impressions" By Par Lindh Project. Not only for the reasons explained before, but also vbecause Par Lindh is the founder oftheSwedish Art Rock Society that gave birth to this movement and because in that album Par Lind Project, Anglagard, Bjorn Johanson and Flower Kings are represented.
  5. 00's: Still the decade hasn't ended and for that reason Idon't have the perspective to mention adefinitive album.

I won't go with mainstream albums because the choice would had to be a

1.- Lollypop Rock album for the 60's, probably an early Beatles.
2.- Disco album for the 70's.
3.- Thriller for the 80's.
4.- Boys or Girls album for the 90's, if lucky Nevermind which is not my cup of tea either.
5.- Rap album for the 00's

And honestly, couldn't care less. LOL
.

Wow cool posts!

Alright well...if we are talking strictly Rock (and all its friends) then:

60s - Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited.
(IMO the most important rock album of all time.  Dylan says FU to the folk past and blows the rock world away.  A unique combination of folk, blues, beat poetry, country, and punk spirit.  The ultimate in influence mashing, predating and trend setting.  Thank Dylan for the latter day Beatles, Hendrix, and just about anything else you ever cared for).

70s - David Bowie - Aladdin Sane (clinched the title of Glam King and the future of glam rock and rock personalities). or Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (drugs, darkness, heavy as hell.  a spawning point for modern rock and metal.)

80s - The 80s had such a wide variety of artists and great albums to chose from.  Everything was being taken from the last 2 decades and expanded upon, or improved. My nominees are U2 - War because it took a bit of the punk scene's fighting spirit mixed it was pop song structures and hooks, mixed a bit of arena size rock, and gave it all a nice wall of sound to work with too. Or there was R.E.M. - Murmur which basically showed the everyday man woman and child that even four college kids with no money, from
Georgia could write better pop songs than any Madonna or Duran Duran.  Not to mention it impacted everyone else who didn't think it was possible thus helping to spawn modern alternative and indie rock.

90s - Slint - Spiderland.(easily the most unique album of the 90s and a taste of what was to come/be mimicked).

00s - The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
(the MOST 21st century band and their best album that combines almost every genre imaginable and appeals to those who prefer one or more of the combined genres.  This is their most dynamic album and the first album they began experimenting with different ideas like songs suites, and continual themes).

Up to there, I actually agree Tongue, although I could have Dire Straits' Love Over Gold for the 80s. I don't know much of the 90s and 00s, but I certainly prefer Hackett's To Watch The Storms to The Power To Believe, and I haven't headed for any 90s Crimson yet.

Well, I have become a fan of the band through Strawberry Jam, and I have to say Sung Tongs was unfortunately kind of disappointing/dull in parts. There are some good tracks, but it hasn't grown on me like Strawberry has. Generally, the sound of Sung Tongs is acoustic, and (from what I can recall) there are either NO electronics on the album (or it nearly lacks them). I can enjoy some of the "looping" material they have made, but Animal Collective doesn't feature enough variety or technical excellence to justify the length of some of the looping acoustic material.

For example, although it's relaxing enough, the longest track "Visiting Friends" is ultimately redundant and hard to get through if it is anything more than background music.

Interestingly enough, two of the most interesting/endearing songs on the album for me (I guess they work more as novelties) are "Sweet Road" (my fave) and "College" (just funny), which also happen to be the shortest tracks around only 1 min in length. "Winters Love" holds my interest well too.

I'm personally on the look out for Feels, from which I heard a track or two and it seems more appealing to me than Sung Tongs, being placed between that album and SJ.

If you love Strawberry Jam, you may do well to check out Panda Bear's solo album Person Pitch, which features many of the dominating ideas in sound from that AC album, but of course it isn't exactly the same. (Panda Bear is one of the two major cornerstones of Animal Collective). If anything, his album is a logical extension (not progression) of SJ, to put it simply.

Unrelated to AC: My friend just got me a copy of the Flaming Lips' The Soft Bulletin 5.1. To sum it up, I now have a new favorite album of the '90s decade! Thumbs%20Up

Sung Tongs is very good, but also quite inaccessible.  Not on the level of Feels or Strawberry Jam, but definitely an essential album for AC fans.

Sung Tongs is very good, but also quite inaccessible.  Not on the level of Feels or Strawberry Jam, but definitely an essential album for AC fans.
My favorite alternates between Sung Tongs and Strawberry Jam. My intro to the band was Here Comes the Indian so I was put off for a while. Sung Tongs brought be back tenfold. Gotta love that Animal Collective.

60s: Abbey Road
70s: Wish You Were Here
80s: Spirit of Eden
90s: OK Computer
00s: ???

Damn some of those were hard. ITCOTCK could have been in for the 60s, the 70s had some amazing albums like IV and Paranoid which could also been in, the 80s was difficult because I couldn't think of anything - until I remembered the amazing Spirit of Eden (although Laughing Stock is better), the 90s was an obvious choice for me even though there was some great albums, and I'm gonna wait the 00s out before I make a call.

Nice choices, but IMO the 70s has to be Live At The Roxy (the expanded CD edition, of course).
And for 90s I'd say Lather.

It's fun to speculate with this question! I will try to look at it from a more general viewpoint...

A great candidate for the title would be Arcade Fire's Funeral. It came out of nowhere and was pretty successful *and* it is widely recognised as a masterpiece, seemingly growing in stature with time. It also appeals to a wide range of music lovers.

Other possible contenders:
Sigur Rós - Takk
White Stripes - Elephant or Get Behind Me Satan
Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head
Tool - Lateralus
Radiohead - Kid A (such a shame it came out so early in the decade...that tends to work against an album)

I suppose this topic will crop up several times in magazines and all music related forums this year and the next Big smile

Hmmm tough choice for me but i will try: I will mention only those who are prog or related to prog in a way or another, otherwyse is a realy tough task to mention only one, almost impossible
 60's : Chad and Jeremy - The ark - 1968
70's: tough one realy, the golden age, each week were released outstanding albums in that decade: Genesis  - Trick of the tail - 1976 or  Jethro Tull - Songs from the wood - 1977, but many many more worth mentioning
80's: Iron Maiden - Somewhere in time - 1986 or Queensryche - Operation mindcrime - 1988, Rush - Hold your fire - 1987
90's: Dream Theater - Images and words - 1992 or Shadow Gallery - Carved in stone - 1995 or Angra - Holy land - 1996
00's; Pagan's Mind - celestial entrance - 2002, an many more. Quite impossible to name just one from each decade. Still I belive I made a good list

As for other decades,  60s  Tommy by The Who
                                         70s The Lamb  Genesis

90s Unfolded like Staircase by Discipline

There are many bands which i don´t understand how they got to be as popular as they are/were... Dire Straist is definitly one of those... not a bad band, but I can´t see why they had that much success

Talent and luck. Same as most artists. Dire Straits happened to be playing the right material at the right time at the right place perfectally twice (Sultans and Money for Nothing.) Luckily for them, they were good enough maintain a steady following from that.

Absolutely impossible for me to say. I can answer with what I'd go from the top of my head right now, though:

60's The Doors of the Crimson King
70's Paranoid Aqualung
80's Under the Sign of Gore
90's Hail, Morningrise, Hail
00's Light of Day, Day of Isa.

I know I'm reusing an old joke by now, but two albums is the closest I can get to the list, ever.
