I am astonished to have not seen any discussion on this subject. The Championships start today! So, I decided to start this thread.
Tomorrow Poles play with Germans. We have never won with Germans so far... Well, there must always be the first time, right? German friends, get ready for The Battle of Grunwald (Tannenberg) part 2!

I'm focused on tomorrow of course - Germany vs. Poland 20:45 Invited
by a Polish friend we'll hopefully have a nice evening with Bratwurst
and Zubrowka which should have a remis as the result.
But I'm afraid this desire will not be accomplished ...
Germany vs. Poland 2:0

As an outsider I was going to say 2-0 as well. But it would be nice if the Poles would perform a stunt tonight.
I'm happy either way, just as long as The Netherlands (my country of birth) will win the tournament . That won't be easy, though, I suppose.

Probably the tighest finalist groups ever. Perhaps another surprise is in store ? Question whether defence wins it (Hello Greece) or offence finally rules supreme. As a Canadian, I am rooting for the Swiss or the Dutch. Let the big boys beat each other up . I just hope the most beautiful play wins top prize for the beautiful game.

Actually Tuz, the Battle of Tannenberg Pt 2 has already taken place (during WWI) and the Germans won; they were fighting Russians, though.
Yeah, 2 - 0 for Germany it's going to be.

First day:
Switzerland vs Czech Republic (0-1)
Portugal vs Turkey (2-0)
I'm portuguese, but I must say that we could have won for more goals, three shots hit the post.

Even if the Germans win tomorrow, the Poles will win too - there's a couple of them playing for Germany...
The Eurochampionship is a festival with players coming from everywhere pretending they are "nationals" of the jackets they use - not very appealing for me.

Indeed, It was a great match by Poland, but tonight our boys didn't manage to beat Germans (and two Poles). Did you see Podolski's reactions after each goals he scored? He wasn't happy. I think his heart was broken each time he scored.
But I still hope we will beat other opponents and qualify to the next round...

Podolski wasn't offside, allthough it may have seemed so at first sight. The rule may not be fair, but that's how it is. But Smolarek WAS offside, by a very small inch. My sympathies for the polish team that fought hard. I hope they'll win the next matches. By the way Netherland rules !!! Great first half. Best match so far !!!

I won the pool we made, I was one of the last to choose and as 2-0 and 3-1 were already occupied so 3-0 it became.
great play, of course the first goal was off-side, but where was the italian offensive. lazy, poor and basically inept. great play by Van Bronkhorst man of the match if you'd ask me (saved from the line, pushing the out-break that resulted in the second goal and finally scoring a goal aswel, great player)
I watched a geat match, sorry for the itallinas on board, but you weren't good enough today.

No, it wasn't. One of the Italian defenders was behind the back line, and therefore removed the "off side" of Van Nistelrooij... check the rules...great refereeing of the linesman and referee...

Yes Soul Dreamer, article 11.4.1. of the refereeing states that if a player leaves the field and doesn't inmediately returns, he must be considered inside the field:
11.11 DEFENDER LEGALLY OFF THE FIELD OF PLAY
A defender who leaves the field during the course of play and does not immediately return must still be considered in determining where the second to last defender is for the purpose of judging which attackers are in an offside position.
Such a defender is considered to be on the touch line or goal line closest to his off-field position. A defender who leaves the field with the referee's permission (and who thus requires the referee's permission to return) is not included in determining offside position. |
Note: this is the USA version of the refereeing code, so the number is 11.11 instead of 11.4.1
But even more, Panucci was not outside the field because a rival pushed him, he was outside the field because Buffon pushed him, so Van Nistelrooij shouldn't be affected by an act not caused by him or his team.
It's a perfect goal
Excellent game by Holand, the midfield worked incredibly destroying any Italian effort.

As usual , the Azzuri can't do anything without unbelievable drama. Getting clobbered in the opening match is the Italian way to light a fire under their butts. The Dutch on the other hand, played a perfect game, offensively and defensively , everyone on the same page (a rather rare event for this side).Without a doubt , the big surprise! Hey, les Bleus! What was that disgraceful performance? Underpaid, are you? The exact opposite of the Dutch-Italy game, the French didn't RUN. My dad once said that in ice hockey, the greatest attribute is skating. Well in football, its RUNNING. I guess it was too hot in the stadium for too much exertion.

Looks like the Dutch and the Spaniards have a burr in their trunks! The others better wake up because offense is plowing defense early on. The truth is it will tighten up but as an unbiased fan, let the goals fly into the "old onion bag"!

Yeah, nice games last night. And Ibrahimovic: what a shot!!!
Also, I'm leaving now to watch the next 2 games at my friends. I'm on for Czech this time, though they're not as interesting without Rosicky. Also, Portugal was one of the reasons Finland didn't make it, so how coudl I want them to win ;)
Later on, Switzerland should win. I have no personal preferences here, but as the Swiss kind of have two injured players from the BVB0, I guess I must. Have a great evening everyone, hope we'll get great games this time too :D

My problem with this sport can be summarized by discussing a play during the Switz/Turkey match:
Swiss guy has the ball and the Turkish player is falling closely behind- the Swiss guy CLEARLY tripped on his own feet, and he acted like a little sissy even though it didn't hurt, and the Turkey player got a Yellow card.
There is WAY too much complaining and acting in soccer.

Oh yeah, the match was awesome. Croatia played well, and very very clever. Germany was shouting more than playing... Though still, considering the 2 other teams there, they'll both be heading forth, Croatia's for certain now, but I doubt austria can give Germany any real challenge...
Also, the game later today... I expect a lot from Smolarek. Poland lacks a lot of crucial players, but still, Austria shouldn't be there, and wouldn't if they weren't the hosts.

Well, I'm afraid by tonight Italy will officially be out... They should've been more effective on that first match. Not that I will shed any tears... I haven't seen either of the matches, and at present we have much more serious problems here to deal with that the elimination of our soccer team.

Who is Italy playing? I need to rub their eventual loss in my dad's face.

The Oranje.. Wow..
Sneijder, RVN and Robben are like the Dutch of 88, just brilliant performance over the Bleu.
7 goals by the 2 world cup finalists. Simply stunning..

Yes, it feels like in '88, even better! This is really awesome!

Another exhilarating performance by the Dutch, so much pace and purpose going forward, so much grit in defence!!
Who knows, Buffon's penalty save might just be something we are talking about in 2 weeks...

If you have read little reviews of mine these days, it is fully due to the Euro. I am a football fanatic, and I have seen all the games so far.
My preferences go to small countries (geographically, but not from a football standpoint). When you look to the performances of Croatia, Portugal and of course The Netherlands (and to a lesser extent from the Czech Republic), it is just fantastic.
Croatia has less inhabitants than the Germans have licensed football players...Can you believe this! And to imagine that at least one of the finalists of the previous world cup will get home after the preminilary tour is amazing (both might even go home sooner than they had expected).
The one big country I'm supporting is Spain. They were also rather performing during their opening game, and I'm looking forward to watch their second game tomorrow against Sweden.
I would also like to mention the overall quality of the games so far. If you would except two games (France-Roumania and Austria-Croatia), I believe that this Euro is one of the best ever. What are your views about this?
Hup hup Holland, arriba España, vamos Portugal. I just hope one of these three is going to make it.

What a fuc*ing team, Holand is working as the Clockwork Orange we all new.
That Robben is a train, he left all French defence behind, clearly rised his head toi look towards the cemnter and placed the ball in the foot of Van Persie.
His own goal was fantastic due to his position.

I'm really nervous about this game. Don't think we'll make it, but desperately hopes so. It's gonna be one hell of a job for the defence. All luck to Mellberg and Hansson especially.

Oh yes, but he's knee kicked in and said "stop". So now we're weakened offensively. But they're doing an amazing defensive job right now. So much pressure.

It certainly was. Such a fighting spirit and great defence. Well, it's not over yet. I hope we'll enter the Russia game with this much heart. If so, it shouldn't be a problem. And Greece SHOULD lose against Spain.

Another important night for the Euro. Fortunately, Spain did win their game. At least, attacking football was rewarded. Such a defensive game from the Sweeds could definitely not end on a draw. And I strongly believe that Sweden will have major problems in their final game against Russia.
Arriba el pichichi. Arriba España.

Unfortunately this version of the song is much shortened comparing to the album version which is over 16 minutes long. Namely, almost the whole intro with the choir, great hammond, church bells, etc. is cut in that clip.

Get these two first:

1969
../album.asp?id=11889 - Enigmatic
4.08
(20 ratings)
1970
../album.asp?id=12006 - "Red Niemen"
3.86
(7 ratings)
These are his first prog albums and the closest to what you like I think. Later he became more jazz-avantgarde and then delved into electronics (e.g. "Katharsis" is a fully electronic album). The first one contains the song from the clip I sent you. The second one is also called "Czerwony (Red) Enigmatic" or "Człowiek jam niewdzięczny".

I'm a big fan of Battiato's explorations into those past his 'traditional' prog albums.. but I'll start with those two. Worked today and got some more OT... I think I can afford a few recommendations. I'll order those this week... best place to get them? The same Polish music site you gave me a link to?
