Apparently there are simularities in the personalities of fans of classical music and fans of heavy metal. Both are said to be 'creative' and 'at ease with themselves' but 'not outgoing'

I guess we all knew this anyway, and it's a bit of a generalisation, but an interesting study nonetheless..

I saw this, apparently rock/metal fans are
Low self-esteem, creative, not hard-working, not outgoing, gentle, at ease |
Bit upset at the "not hard-working" bit. As Andy says,a bit of a generalisation to say the least.
This bit is funny
"The general public has held a stereotype of heavy metal fans being suicidally depressed and of being a danger to themselves and society in general. But they are quite delicate things."

I read that article earlier, and I'm very sceptical, especially about the part where the participants were asked about their personality. I really don't trust that data to be truthful in the majority of cases, people have this strange habit of not disclosing their dark sides. I wonder why.

Peopleintomusic .com is the place where you can fill in a questionnaire where they are continuing their study of this subject. And I wonder if anyone will mention the affinities shared by Classical & Heavy Metal music lovers in the Prog Metal is not Prog Rock, 'cause it's metal not rock . As if metal is not a rock genre, but jazz is ...

The real important question is: Does the music you listen to determine your personality, or does your personality determine your taste in music? I know it's probably a balance, but it'd be interesting to find out which is more the case.

Prog Metal and Classical are my two favourite forms of music, Andy...in fact they are by far and away the two forms of music I listen to most these days...and I have to say I'm most of the things listed by Alan...

I always believed the theory that a wide variety of tastes in music meant a higher level of intelligence. Not that I think I'm smarter than most 'cause of my collection of music including every genre known to man except Opera and Today's Top Forty Dance Pop crap. I think I'm smarter than most because I came in at the top in the 96th percentile on IQ tests administered when I was in 8th grade. Oh, and the Mensa site's test overstate your intelligence. They had me in the 98th percentile. I think they were trying to sucker me into something

I find it surprising that dance music has the least gentle fans.

Nor me, although there is dance music and there is 'Dance Music' if you know what I mean..
The techno/Hard House clubs I used to frequent in the early to mid 90's, were 100% trouble free. It probably had something to do with the fact that the people were off their barnets on pills...and I dont mean Holsten Pills. Thats the difference.
The above is not advocating drug use, it's merely an obseravtion of reality.

What if you like both jazz and indie? Does the high and low self esteem cancel each other out?

Yes, and you're left in a catatonic stupour with no opinion on yourself or the world around you at all, going by this study's logic..

The problem with this is that a few weeks ago I saw a similar study that said jazz fans were loners, not outgoing. And how can almost everyone be "creative"? It sounds to me like everyone wants to think of themselves as creative, but I haven't met very many truly creative people.

If I relied on this test, my diagnosis would be at least fourfold schizophrenia. I had a low and a high self-esteem, am out-going and not outgoing, gentle, not gentle, creative, hard-working, not hard-working and at ease.
I don't care what random surveys say about my personality, but it's fun to find out how you are supposed to be considering my answers

I think it depends on which one you'd prefer, which one you consider your number one genre.
EDIT: Also, why is this thread not in the General Music Discussion forum?

Probably because it covers the general pointlessness of research polls.

Yeah, you could probably tear the methodology of the survey to shreds if you wanted to.

Not that I believe in this tests accuracy, or that musiclisteners only listen to one genre. But its not that weird that listening to all kinds of genres also suggests a complex (schizophrenic) personality. Its possible to feel both outgoing and introvert and have both low and high selfesteem, no?
And I'd think that if you gather all the blues, jazz, classical, opera, soul, metal, indie, bollywood, (Ok, and I can't explain why dance is included) fans, it might only cover about 5 - 10% of the world's population. Chartpop and Rap could very well cover as much as 70-80% alone. I guess most people not really that interested in music, would be closer to answering chart pop (as in whatever is on the radio) than jazz or classical.

what about the people who dont care about and/or like music? do they have no personality, or are they crazy?
btw i know people who listen to rap/hip-hop who have low self esteem, and i know rock fans with high self esteem. this survey makes no sense and is not only a bad generalization, it's not one at all. there are so many different types of people who listen to different types of music that this survey is worthless.
next thread...

I'm not sure what indie means, but a hell of a lot of people listen to all those genres. Maybe only shallowly, but I've never met someone who only listens to rap or the radio.

I think that the general population could be described as "putting on the radio and then forgetting about it, and not even caring or knowing who is playing as long as it doesn't get on their nerves". Therefore, the percentage they constitute of any radio stations numbers are a sign that audience numbers are not representative or "hard core" fans of the genre or music classification. I.E. - mainstream radio success means little as far as actually building a lasting career. Compare to the music genres outside this so-called mainstream - Alt-Country, Prog, Bluegrass, whatever ... and the acts that have been around for a decade or so, yet never get to make the charts or the covers of the various music media. Lucinda WIlliams, the Flower Kings, Del McCoury, and many others make a living because of fans, i.e. people who care about the music their idols make. And this survey does not differentiate betwen the avid and casual music listener.
