Well to begin with, I think DT are Over rated. Sure, they are incredibly technically talented, but I feel as a Prog Metal band, they have a long way to come before they deserve any more of my money.
First of all, I find them to be incredibly unexpressive. Some songs are an exception, (Wait for sleep, Surrounded) but overall, I find their lyrics to be incredibly shallow and often ridiculously lame.
Second of all, DT show off way too much. It seems to me when they are writing a new song/album, John Petrucci must sit there wondering where he could fit a guitar solo. DT do a lot better when they stick to some basic themes and softer melodies.
Third of all, they aren't very compositionally talented. For example, "Take The Time." It has good solos, terribly lame lyrics and overall bad vibes for me. I listen to prog to relax and feel some emotion, Not to listen to incredibly unoriginal guitar solos and cheesy lyrics.
But thats just my opinion.

Nope.. I still contest more than half of the metal bands today are using some form or idea that Dream Theater has created.
If you are coming into Dream Theater late, ie... didn't listen to them in the 90s where there wasn't much progressive metal out there, then I could possibly see your point, but to live it and hearing each album in the beginning, well it was mind blowing.
After spending some time here and listening to alot the progressive metal bands, listen to them again and let me know if you still think they are overrated...

Define overrated.
I find it to be a term that says, "I don't understand this, surely it can't be good! I'm not crazy, the majority who likes whatever I don't understand is!" - so, if you're part of that minority that doesn't like them, then sure, in your eyes they're overrated, but to the millions of fans around the world... hell no, they're not.

I'm not a true fanboy, but I don't think they are overrated. DT are a great band: excellent musicians and the best of prog metal.

I do think they get enough attention on our site (ratings and reviews) maybe even too much ! Because people that don't really have a feel or click with the band still find it a good idea to check out and review their albums. Their good right of course but not ideal for DT. Because of that they get a lot of low ratings and negative reviews.
So my answer is: they are NOT overrated with their album averages but they do get more attention then is good for them.

When was the last time you saw someone underrate them because they are popular?
I
think they are overrated because to me their music mainly sound like a
combination of a bunch of other bands before them I don't think were
particulary progressive, or great (imo) in the fist place.

And yes, NASCAR ia overrated.

This is a very difficult question because on the face of it they certainly aren't...
It's only now that their "mainstream popularity" is increasing when the initial groundbreaking (yes, I think it was) work was done in the 90s and only critical plaudits came their way. However, the most recent albums have been decreasing in quality but as I've already said their popularity is increasing which for me implies that they are overrated...
So, I'm not really sure...

I think we've hit on a new idea for a poll here........DREAM THEATER v NASCAR.
I'd vote DT anyday. If it was DT v F1 It'd be closer, but I'd still vote DT.
Seriously I DO rate DT very highly, and I don't think I overrate them at all.

"overrated" ... what does this mean? The most basic meaning is that something is rated more highly than it should be. This essentially also means that the majority of people is wrong. While I don't think that there's anything wrong with making that claim (free speech, everybody's entitled to their opinion etc) I'd still like to point out this:
Whenever you think that something's overrated (or underated, doesn't matter) it's a good idea to keep in mind that maybe you're wrong. Have a look at the community of users which your opinion is up against. If many of them are people who you trust to make informed decisions, there's a good chance that you are wrong.
got carried away there ... back to the topic: I don't think that Dream Theater are overrated in any way. They are the single most important Prog Metal band ... and I guess they always will be.

Those who claim they're the greatest prog geniuses ever are as mistaken as those who denigrate everything they do.

Every band and album on here is overrated because all prog music sucks and prog bands and prog fans are all pompous idiots. Britney Spears, Linsay Lohan, The Jonas Brothers, and Miley Cyrus are the only true great musicians. We should be worshipping these highly talented musicians and composers instead of wasting our time with the so-called progressive rock/metal musicans who can't even play their music in a normal time signature with a simple beat that you can dance to.

As most people should know by now, I don't like DT, in spite of repeated attempts to get into them. However, I feel the premises of this poll are completely wrong... It seems people's right to their own opinions and tastes is not being taken into account. Yes, lots of people believe DT are the best thing since sliced bread.. I may not agree (and I don't), but I don't think it is a good idea to try to show they are misguided. I certainly wouldn't like anyone to try to prove to me that I am misguided in my liking Band X or Y.

see a common comment we see here is overrated and underrated... how that can that be?
people who just give an album 5 stars because they like the group.. or the album (overrated)
people who just give an album 1 star because they dislike the group.. or the album (underrated)
for me... the way I review.. is to cut that crap... I try to rate is as it applies to the site.. . or the specific sub-genre.. sometimes even the artist. Thus I have albums I rate higher that I HATED... and albums I gave 1 star to.. that I really enjoyed.

Ok. This opens a whole new territory for me I have to say. Remains the crucial question: Is your way the way to do it and how it is meant by PA ? Or is it YOUR preferred way of rating ?
I ask this because I had the same sort of discussion with Cacho lately and he said more or less the same thing. It could indeed mean my way of rating (subjectively instead of objectively) is totally wrong !
Please help me out here.

sure.... as an example of how I rate.... I think it was better explained than my DT review.
Look at my review of the official bootleg from Magma the 1971 show at Bruxelles. Look at how.. and why I rate it the way I do. That is in a nutshell how I do my ratings...
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=3321 - http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=3321
I rate it for my personal tastes... but I know most care about what I think of it as little as I care whether you like the album or not... to me what matters is a) telling me 'about' the album... and b) for those who have quite a range of prog and it's history as it were.. where does this album fit in. It's a GREAT.. Great live album.. but it's appeal is only for fans of Magma or Zeuhl. Thus the comparibly low rating.

People are entitled to their tastes, but it's important that people recognise and distinguish the difference between fact and opinion (distinguishing between subjectivity and objectivity). For that matter, some opinions are more valid/ justifiable than others (a well informed opinion is better than an ill informed one). If someone makes unjustifiable and/or erroneous claims, I think it's a good thing that others will take them up on it. Arguing taste is one thing (saying that one's taste sucks is silly) but arguing claims to apparently objective excellence is another.
No one can prove that you're misguided in liking art, but they might prove (or at least indicate) that you're placing it on too high a pedestal for the wrong reasons based on erroneous or unjustifiable assumptions.

Itīs hard to call one of the most influential progressive metal bands overrated IMO. Even though I think some of the later albums from the band has been of a lower quality than their early output those albums are still way ahead of what their contemporaries put out. So overrated? Hell NO.

Never was a fan. Never will be..
That said, I think they're a great band
They have a huge appreciative audience, are great musicians and one of the most commerically successful prog bands of the last 20 or so years. 'Overated' is a meaningless term, and I always think twice before sl*gging off a successful contemporary prog band. They have enormous value in the world of prog/metal.
Whether I like them or not is irrelevant to their success and value. They make many people very happy, and I hope they're around for along time to come.

Right, so the answer to "Are Dream Theater overated?" is complex.
Judging from the last time I saw an up-to-date photo of them, I'd say that:
LaBrie is overated; Portnoy is somewhat overated; Myung is underated; Rudess is severely underated; Petrucci is ated just about right.

I think Pertucci is over-rated in skill but under-rated in importance.
When DT came out, there was a entire music genre of shredders was much bigger than the current resurgence. Everyone and their little brother had chops out the wazoo. I remember when the guy who became Buckethead was featured in Guitar magazine....in the context of chops at that point Pertucci was about average for a shredder.
Now when grunge hit, shredding was dropped like a nuclear potato. It was Pertucci who kept to his identity and continued to refine his chops. In some ways, he was the only one left still in the spotlight. As a result, the only active shredder many of the guitarists coming up now knew was Pertucci.
Today's shredders range from phenomenal to pretty weak......enough ranting.
I appreciate Pertucci but if you really want to hear guitar there's much better places.

They are not my favourite band from the third wave of prog, but the issue of whether they are overrated has been dealt with in other threads - it's purely a question of personal taste. I've got a couple of their LPs and listen from time to time, but am not that gone on them. It doesn't mean they are overrated, just that I rate other bands more highly.
Having said that, anyone who can bring Transatlantic into existence, as Portnoy did, simply cannot be described as anything other than historic, genius, incredible, and every other superlative I haven't got time to think of now

I don't think the band is overrated right now simply because they have released some weak albums lately that took away their godly like status.

well, if you compare how necessary they are to life vs things like "air" , "food", lodgings", then they are over-rated. If you compare them to other musical acts, then all that can be said is that they make music that some people love, some people like, some people pass on, some people dislike, some people hate. Then there's the ones who abhor the actual concept without having heard the music.
So ask a fan - "do you love them too much" ? Ask an Anti-DT person - "do you really hate them that much" ?
Then gfo back to the important things in life ...

Except for much of Octavarium, everything since the addition of Rudess to the line-up is utter w**kery. DT started out strong, but fell flat. They are so contrived they have become virtually unlistenable. The metal sound of Systematic Chaos is a slap in the face to that genre. One word for them on SC...posers.

Well... Those people who don't know of them are are not underrating the band, of course, because by not knowing of them they cannot have a low opinion of the music, they have no opinion of the music. However, one might say that DT is under known, and that possibly could be in part because the more mainstream music establishment underrates/ underestimates the band's potential commercial appeal and so does not promote it. Course Prog is not a popular label/ "genre" these days, so we could say the same for Prog generally, and there are reasons why it doesn't get promoted so much or find its way on mainstream radio so much. COurse there are popular bands with mainstream success that we incorporate under the prog label beyond certain classics.
not assess or value the music too lowly in that they're not rating it at all.

Then there's the ones who abhor the actual concept without having heard the music.
So ask a fan - "do you love them too much" ? Ask an Anti-DT person - "do you really hate them that much" ?
Then gfo back to the important things in life ... |
A little bit of reason.... It never hurts...
What I love is that even if DT is so hated by many here, they all come running to post in these threads about the band... ALL of them, including some particular members....
It's like the person who hates somebody so much he can't stop thinking about that person....

It is all too common for people to lack perspective.
I'm not a DT fan or hater, but I am attracted to "overrated" threads -- though such topics have been overdone. I'm with those who think that bands are overrated by some and underrated by others. It shouldn't be about whether someone loves a band too much (no point in arguing taste) or too little, it should be about whether a band is assessed or valued too highly or lowly within certain parameters. A problem I have with overrated/ underrated discussions is that there are too many generalisations made, because one can always find someone who makes excessive claims to greatness (overrates) and those who do the opposite (underrate), because they're useless if one accepts that art generally is underrated by some and overrated by others in terms of claims stated in an objective manner, and because too often it boils down to people's taste (if they -- meaning some people -- don't like something they claim it's overrated and if they like something other's underrate it -- ridiculous).
I might love a band yet still overrate it in some ways (my claims to excellence may be unfounded due to lack of knowledge). For instance, much as I like Vander, I know that it would ridiculous for me to say that he is the greatest musician or the most innovative. That would be overrating. But if I said that I loved him best (which wouldn't be true anyway), I'm merely saying something about my taste/ preference.
Not being a music academic, I know my limitations. I'm a total amateur when it comes to music theory. We're all critics, but many of us lack the expertise/ knowledge, and research skills. to back up certain assertions ina reasonably valid manner.

My opinion . . .
Yes, they are, but not because they aren't any good. Mainly because I don't see why they are considered so influential.
Images & Words was a fantastic album. Pretty much everything on that record was done right. From that point on the band gradually became more and more self-absorbed until now, they aren't really doing anything that special, with the exception of a couple records (SfaM, 8VM).
John Myung is the most tasteful player in the band, and what does he get for his genious playing? Turned way, way down in the final mix.
It's stuff like that that really bothers me. As musicians, they are really good, but as a band, they fizzled out years ago.
My opinion.

Kevin Moore brought two desperately needed elements to DT, melody and texture. OSI's biggest downfall is that his voice can't match his songwriting. Sadly, he actually had the chops to hang with the rest of the guys, but he wanted it his own way so we get his depressive stuff which is cool in its own way but they definitely were better together.
My only DT gig was Moore's last tour with them (dates me terribly) but it was a very memorable evening.

^ Personally, I think both Kevin and Derek were better fits with the band than Jordan. And I love the guy, he seems nice and has some excellent chops, but I dunno . . . too many virtuosos in one outfit can seriousely cripple a band's songwriting ability.

I voted no because I cannot overate something that I don't like in the first place. DT leaves me indifferent, I see nothing special there, except for a great rhytm section. As for the other three, chopzilla for musician wannabes. Like another colleague mentioned here, great musicians do not always make great music.

I've been reading this thread and my comment is simply "to each, his own". Anyone with any musical talent cannot help but respect DT and it's individual members as their music is highly complex relating to instrument wizardry. The only equal that I can find to DT in the individual instrument skill is Deep Purple who I believe is the main driving influence behind DT. Musical w**kery?? - those that say that have got it right. But that is what Dream Theater are actually about. Sorry for you guys who don't like listening to skill being proven.
If I want to hear extreme skill I listen to DT - if I want to hear extreme melody then I listen to Camel. They each have a place in my music collection as do many others for various different resons.

I don't know. Are You.

Yes they are. They are very good at playing odd time meters at very fast tempos, they just don't take you anywhere. And I don't think they haver their own sound/tone as a band. They sound like any metal band that has money to afford a very good studio. I think their first record is underrated. It had a distinct sound. But that's just me...

Not sure I agree that their first had a distinct sound (quite a lot of Rush in that album), but I agree that it's underrated. It's one of the few things by them that I can still listen to with any degree of pleasure. Charlie Domenici was nothing special as a singer, but at least he wasn't worse than LaBrie.

Wait...Rush isn't in this conversation?
Anyway, if DT is mainly influenced by Deep Purple, as you say, would they not have more tasteful keyboard work? I don't really pay attention to the origins of progressive metal but I'm pretty sure Deep Purple is not the main driving influence behind DT.
And you could have all the instrumental skill in the world and write lousy material. Thankfully for Deep Purple that was not the case, with DT the question begs to be asked.
