Who's got the best live album? I'm going for Jimi's Band Of Gypsys. He pulled off a miracle with this album. He released a live album of all new material with a new band and it became one of his best. Almost nobody else has done that. He only did it as a throwaway to Capital for contractual commitments.

Before you vote, please note that there's an error on the KC selction which was supposed to be "USA" and not "Islands"

Genesis Live. They were a unique live band in those days. Could have been the ELP album as well.

Yes (the band): I think the 1st Keys To Ascension Album is a better live album than Yessongs. But Yessongs has a lot of good material and has most of the early classics.

Did I screw up here?! I could of sworn that album was live. I had it for a while but didn't really care for it so I got rid of it.

If I pulled a boner here, tell me how to delete it please.

Yessongs is excellent,All The World's A Stage is very good-but not really a prog album (although a sublime version of By-Tor& The Snow Dawg).

Genesis Live is ok but much prefer Seconds Out.

so for me:

1.Different Stages - Rush (includes a third disc from the 1977 Kings tour)
2. Yessongs (brilliant version of Yes classics)
3. Seconds Out (despite absence of Gabriel is a lovely album)

Agree with Holdsworth's All Night Wrong, I've been listening it the past couple of months and it is a great album

The Best IMO, are

Yes - Symhonic, featuring a symphonic orchestra and most of their best songs (CTTE, Gates, Starship etc.)

Rush - Rush in Rio, fabulous.

I have both on DVD, but I believe there are CD versions available also.

Also like La Gazza Ladra and Real To Reel Marillion and Live & Life Arena and then some more

I like live

Fabulous indeed, although I think that Different Stages is better.

Also agree with Reed in that All the World's a Stage is excellent but not prog. I will vote for Yessongs since Different Stages is absent.

The Allman Brothers is an excellent mix of southern rock, jazz and blues. Songs like "In memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Whipping post" are excellent. The interplay that the band members had with each other ws amazing.

Ok. I must've been thinking of Earthbound when I picked Islands. But since Earthbound is the lesser of the two, I'd go with USA which IS a better live album. I hadn't heard either of these albums in ages.

I'll go along with that. Especially the Aquatarkus segment towards the end. When I saw them do this in Quad, it just blew me away. Gotta be one of Keith's best performances. Unfortunately as a live album, I thought the recording quality wasn't up to snuff. Carl's drums sound like they were recorded from way up in the bleachers.

Hell yeah! 12:5 is an AMAZING CD, which just happens to be live, and if it weren't for oocasional cheering from the fans, you'd swear it was studio-recorded. If you've ever doubted Pain of Salvation's talent and just dismissed them as just another prog-metal band, well, this album alone will change your mind IMMEDIATELY. Beautiful acoustic versions of studio recordings, this CD makes for a sublime listen every time!

I've always been a big fan of live albums, but it was still a bit of a shock realising I own all the above .

How can I possibly choose between The Allman Brothers "Filmore East", Mahavuishnu's "From Nothingness To Eternity" and ELP's "WBMFTTSTNE"? On balance, taking only prog into account, and from the list shown, I'd have to go for ELP, if for no other reason than the incendiary version of Tarkus, which has one of my favorite ever climaxes to a live track.

Is Jackson Brownes' Running On Empty, strictly a live album - thought several tracks were recorded in hotel rooms sans audience?

And I would too go with Zappa's Helsinki Concert double as my favourite Zappa live.

Not many new records in this list...

A band which just had two studio albums released had the guts to make a marvelous live recording is Magenta.
Another Time Another Place ('04) is a double live album what catches their sound very exctremely well. Splendid produced and live no overdubs etc.etc.. From a grotesque opus on keyboards, excellent guitar playing a fine rhythm section to that golden voice of Christina.

Surprisingly I see no Pink Floyd in this thread... Or do we think that their live records are not live enough? Or are we waiting on the official release of PULSE?

Okay, I know this is prog rock website, and so I understand why most of these albums are here to choose from (and I would vote for "Seconds Out" as my #1).

BUT if you're going to include Hendrix, The Who, and the freakin' Allman Bros., you absolutely must include Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains the Same," which is a fantastic live album: it's versions of "Dazed & Confused," "No Quarter" and "Stairway" are live masterpieces. (BTW: The Page/Plant No Quarter Live Album (first release) is a very good rock live album as well, as I'm sure some of you know).

I can't believe this string is on it's second page and no one has brought this up! I feel very isolated in my Zep fanaticism.

Oh, and I know some are going to say "How the West Was Won" is better, but I'm aware of the album and, no, it's not better.

As bluetailfly rightly said: It's a shame that Led Zep are not in the list. But I would argue with bluetailfly about "The Song Remains The Same" and "How The West Was Won": IMHO the latter is the better. TSRTS has too many disappointing moments wheras HTWWW is am masterpiece of hard rock (NOOOOOO, LED ZEP ARE NOT HEAVY METAL!!!) caught live. BTW: Does anybody really need live albums??

Of the prog live albums the poll list could include also Gentle Giant's Playing The Fool, Kansas' Two For The Show and Renaissance at Carnegie Hall, and Seconds Out as mentioned. And why not also Rush's Exit... Stage Left. Kinda strange list to exist on a prog site, IMHO. Let's say Yesshows if I SHOULD pick one of them.

How about Counting Crows... Across The Wire?

Most rockers put Thin Lizzy 'Alive & Dangerous' near the top of any rock poll, along with 'Frampton Comes Alive' and Kiss 'Alive'.

I'll be a little more contemporary and suggest Symphony X: 'Live On The Edge Of Forever', (which has phenomenal energy) Threshold 'Critical Energy', (the track listing is nigh on perfect) Enchant 'Live At Last' (its about bloody time... and those boys do give a good concert) and PoS 12:5... awesome.

Ironically, although I am a DT fan, I couldn't put either of their 3CD Live efforts from the last few years into this category, because frankly, dispite the strenth of the material, they just don't hold up in my eyes (I will now have rude messages galore in my inbox).

I have to admit. It's good to see the Allman Bros. Fillmore East get a 3rd place here on this poll, being such a non-prog album it is. You gotta admit, it is one helluva live album. I intentionally made this poll open to prog and non-prog alike just to see how open-minded you all are. And so far, not bad. I didn't expect anybody to vote on Frampton, The Band or Jackson Browne or whatever. You see, I like just about all genres of rock, with a few exceptions like hip-hop (unless the words are very funny and interesting) and heavy metal or any kind of mindless music, but prog has been one of my favs (2nd only to fusion). It is good to see new groups like Spock's Beard and others keeping the prog sound going and up-to-date (although that is without a doubt the dumbest name for a group I've ever heard, no doubt what their favorite TV show is).

Live shows are always great as they give totall freedom. I like it most when the songs are changed extended or whatever, thats  what makes a great live show.

In noting this I have to say that the Floyd really dont have a good live album. However I'd say that the quality of some of the Floyd bootlegs out there is incredable and there is nothing like a performance of shine on 6-12 that goes for 25 minutes. If anyone is interested Id be happy to send them one if they send me the discs first, just private me.

Cheers

Oh by the way i voted for ELP

I started this poll 4 months ago, it got critically panned and went dead for about 3 mos. Now all of a sudden it's coming back at me (KC's Islands mistake and all). Must've pushed a few buttons here.

I still go with Jimi's Band Of Gypsys though! Most original live album ever! Give me Yessongs, ELP's Welcome Back or whatever. But nobody ever did a live album of all original material back then. And good material too. Jimi went through a change here with a different band and sound. Hands down, a monumental feat! Anybody care to debate me with this one?

I'll cheat here, because none of my favourites are included in the list (from the given options I chose Genesis: Live). Also I'll mention some live DVDs. Here's my top 10 of live concerts by prog bands:

1 Roger Waters: In the Flesh (the set list is excellent, although otherwise I prefer Floyd, for Gilmour's and Wright's contibution)
2 Marillion: The Thieving Magpie (La Gazza Ladra) 2CD (for complete perfomance of Misplaced Childhood plus some other favourites of mine: Fugazi, A Script, Jigsaw, Chelsea Monday)
3 Pink Floyd: Pulse 2CD/DVD (mainly for including Dark Side in its entirety)
4 Genesis: Seconds Out 2CD (even Collins couldn't spoil this one, includes Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show, Supper's Ready and some of the best tracks from Trick...)
5 Genesis: Live - The Way We Walk: Volume Two - The Longs (proves that even the most commercial 3 albums, Genesis, Invisible and Dance, had some good prog songs on them)
6 Marillion: Marbles on the Road, 2DVD version from Racket Records (a good selection of Marbles' songs and some other Hogarth-era favourites)
7 Jethro Tull: A Little Light Music CD (the acoustic side of Tull, but probably I'll like Anderson's upcoming live CD/DVD even more)
8 Pink Floyd: Is There Anybody Out There? - The Wall Live 2CD (slightly improved from the studio version, not my favourite PF album either, but, like Gilmour says it, "when it's good, it's very, very good")
9 Rush: Different Stages 3CD (a better choice than Exit... Stage Left, because most of the songs from that are here as well, plus the song 2112 in its entirety and so many other old and new Rush favourites)
10 Yes: Keys to Ascension DVD (2½ hours of the 70's classics, slightly spoiled by the silly animations, though; however, I might prefer Symphonic, if only I had heard/seen it)

Some key live albums were left out, like Genesis' "Seconds Out", Gentle Giant's "Playing the Fool", and Rainbow's "On Stage".  So the poll is kind of worthless.

Really now, the Allman Brothers? The Band?  The lame Jackson Browne?!?  You've got to be kidding me?!!?!

Went with "Welcome back...." classic ELP at their best. KC live lp is USA not Islands. Yessongs would be my second choice.

Three of my favorite live albums aren't on the list.
Genesis "Seconds Out"
Yes "YesShows"
Gentle Giant "Playing The Fool"
