This is the most misunderstood era of Tangerine Dream's output and certainly manages to divide fans the most. Which is your favorite release and why?

1 Zeit Alpha Centauri Phaedra Atem Electronic Meditation

I was feeling bad for Atem, having no votes and all, as I really like that album a lot. But Alpha Centauri is just so good, I had to choose it.
Zeit I really have to be in the mood for, which is rare. It's really just background noise to me, not really music (I find it good for going to sleep to sometimes). Electronic Mediation really seems like a different band to me, more like "typical" kraut rock (along the lines of Can or early Ash Ra Temple).

"Electronic Meditation" is classic krautrock. My choice.

"Sad Rain" ANEKDOTEN

I haven't heard them all, but I remember really liking Zeit.

Zeit then Alpha for me. Love the old lineup.

Zeit is my most played Tangerine Dream album, and probably one of my most played albums in any genre. All 4 are excellent, though.

Zeit, one of my favourite albums, a piece de resistance (and yes, resistance can have a side-meaning here), a wonderful cosmic electronic work of art.
The album I like least from the first four is Atem.

Haven't listened to them enough, but, like a lot of Klause Schulze's stuff, for example, I can listen to all of them and feel they're just about the same.

They can be linked very nicely in fact. Alpha Centauri and Irrlicht might go their separate ways (one cosmic, one drones-y), but they're both ermetic and hallucinogenic. The long epics and pulsating effects in both Zeit and especially Cyborg creates a perfect thin line of comparison.

I'm surprised to see Zeit in the lead here. It is a great album though.

Thanks!
I just may follow this up with some other TD era polls to see what happens.

I reckon I've played Zeit more than any other album too. I first bought the LP in the early 80s and I've listened to it pretty regulary since.

I often have it on quietly as I fall asleep, although I do listen to it 'properly' as well - somehow I never tire of it.

Electronic Meditation
I've only heard that and Alpha Centauri so far. Zeit is up next.

Great poll Alex . I just love this early era Tangs music.
I love Zeit and Atem, Alpha is really good too, though I was never really that keen on the debut album.
In order:-
Zeit
Atem
Alpha Centauri
Electronic Meditation
Another vote for Zeit here, it's probably my favourite album by TD. It's just fantastic and I love that psychedelic spacey sound, which always makes me imagine another world. There's nothing better than lying in the dark listening to this through the headphones. Stunning. Given it's format, I'd say it's their equivalent of Yes' TFTO.

Zeit is the most annoying and boring thing I've ever heard.
It just drones on and on.
So I voted for the debut 'cause it actually has a rock quotient.

Pretty close between all of them but Zeit gets my vote.
Green Desert (recorded '72/'73 but released in the 1980s) is also a favourite of mine.
-------------
Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

Better stay away from TD at the Royal Albert Hall 1975, or Klaus Schulze's Irrlicht and Cyborg...

I don't mind if it actually has some substance but it didn't.
The first track seemed to be just one or two notes for about 10 minutes.
I didn't mind Alpha Centauri so much though.

To me, the first track on Zeit (Birth of Liquid Plejades) starts with slowly interweaving cello tones that remind me of the voices on the Ligeti pieces used in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Hypnotic and compelling, before Florian Fricke's Moog twiddles break the spell.

mmmm... interesting results, never realised how many people loved Zeit. This is the only period of TD I've really come to love, so those four albums are my four favourite by the band. In order it would be something like this:
Zeit, Alpha Centauri, Electronic Meditation, Atem.

I've only heard Alpha and Zeit, but of those Alpha Centauri is better. Don't get me wrong, Zeit is a seminal masterpiece, but the title track of Alpha Centauri is the closest thing to actually being in outer space I've ever heard.

Not my favourites really, I prefer Schulzes Cyborg from this period.
Zeit will be the choice!
