this is just a poll i would like to see the outcome from.
the criteria of what i base this poll on is Musicality, technicality, creativity, live preformance, diversity and progyness over both bands outputs from start off carear til now
Dream Theater - the singular most influtional Progressive Metal band, and the flagship of todays modern progressive band scene (mayby not the best band but they are very important for the status of prog in the 90s and 00s). verry skilld band all bandmembers preveus and those who stil are there, all mastring there instruments in a BIG way, intense songs, often epics in 10+++ and several time signature changes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_LaBrie - James LaBrie - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singer - Lead vocals , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percussion_instrument - Percussion (1991-present)
Toto - a band with no exeptian consist of the moust experianced session musicians in Los Angeles area ( the founding lineupp Exept Bobby Kimball and David Huntgate Louisianna and Texas), a band labeld Pop/rock but litarly play every style in popular music, all members of Toto is masters of ther instriments and have contributed on ceveral albums for other famous artist (Thriller by Michael Jackson are 4 tracks playd by toto members and Human Nature is basicly a Toto tune made by Steve porcaro)
two very different bands in style and genere, but similar in the way that both bands consist of stellar musicians, virtouse, perfect live preformance, perfection in studio.
i think this will be a fun poll with grate coments

That's kind of sad Snowie. What songs have you heard from them? Just curious.
As much as I ADORE both bands, as of this moment, I think I'll choose Toto. Being a guitarist and a drummer myself, Jeff Porcaro and Steve Lukather inspired me to get better as a musician.

I haven't heard much, that is very true. Did they do Africa? I think hearing that was enough to put me off forever, but what do you recommend?

Ah those hits. Well certainly there's sooo much more to Toto than their hits. Well my personal favorite from them are the albums Fahrenheit, Kingdom of Desire and Tambu. As for the songs, I dare you to check these YouTube vids:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvpEFwnfgdY - Kingdom of Desire http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uQqSD7lvaA - Jake To The Bone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHR4PyVppvw - Dave's Gone Skiing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCMeShwz3wk - I Will Remember http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1juoRQOlTBE - These Chains
That's all I can think of for now. My favorites from them though I won't mind if you still don't like them after viewing those stuffs I posted.
Check out their last album called Falling In Between. Lots of good tracks there. Specially this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CvogKjBmJc - Bottom of Your Soul Featuring the great Leland Sklar on bass.
I won't forget when they did that song during their concert here in the Philippines. Amazing!!!!!!

Or maybe the Toto album "Thriller". Many songs have been played on the radio from that lately. Actually, I jest, but I am pretty certain that Steve Lukather and at least one of the Porcaros contributed to that Michael Jackson album. Does anyone know the details? I know that Steve Porcaro has a writing credit for Human Nature. Is it just this one song, or do Toto guys play on more?

I've been getting into Toto lately and they're great so voted for them, a couple of years ago maybe I would have voted for DT but the only album by them I really really like and often listen to is Scenes from the memory. I've only heard 4 albums by Toto though, the first one, Hydra, IV and Falling in between. I especially liked IV and the last one (any other recommended album?). I've found out a couple of days ago that they split up last year, it's a shame, I was already expecting the follow up to Falling in between.

My favourite AOR bands are Toto and Styx. I like Journey and Foreigner too but I still have to get more into them, never heard a complete album by them. I didn't know Def Leppard and Bon Jovi were considered AOR bands, to me they're just hard rock / pop rock bands. I like them both too, especially Def Leppard. Not a big fan of Bon Jovi's last few albums.

The bands I have marked with a strike through the name of the band don´t like me very much, or they are not aor...Triumph and BJ are hard rock bands (well, I don´t know what the hell are Biongiovi friends now), Triumph maybe melodic in any album as Thunderseven, etc...but they were a Hard Rock trio combo in essence.
Eagles=Aor Southern? Well, hehehe. A very imaginative definition. They marked very much their songs with armonies and vocal melodies, but they never did aor. In my oppinion.
The rest of the bands I like, and I have albums of near all of them, except of Cannata. I d´n´t know who are they.
I´d like to add many important bands in the Aor, but years have showed me that the most you look for new albums from new bands, many interesting bands you find. Inside aor style, there are many hidden things, and excellent, I must say.
I´ll write some of the most known bands:
LeROUX (So Fired Up is an aor jewel)
H.E.A.T. - Melodic hard aor. Excellent new sweden band with a marvellous album, edited last year.

in my mind Toto is the gratest band ever, they have concourd bouth playing in studio and live preformances they play evry geners without pouring a sweat, there song execution is flawles, they are musicans who dont see themselvs as rockstars, they are regular guys hwo were lucky enough to play on evry big stadiums in the world, they can litarly play evry other bands round in circles in live-settings, Toto is a band i have raely payd lot of atention too, i have read anything i can find on the internett about Toto, read all Interviews from all members
i have all studio-albums exept Thru the Looking Glass and Dune, my favorite is Isolation, The Seventh One, Mindfilds, the Debut and Falling in Between.
My experiance after I have dived tru all the ups n downs by this band i come to the conclusjon, they are a very facinating band with a grate story. they have experianced evrything ass a band, shifting bandmembers, loosing there Key-member, trouble with there record-label, dealing with harsh musiccritics, getting gramy award, now in october they will get awarded with an Musicans Hall of Fame recognition. Toto have experiaced, all Spinal Tap events, there music is used in High-schools exams for testing students abilatis.

I forgot mention a good album of TOTO: Isolation, with Fergie Frederiksen at voices, who made a huge work with Le Roux a couple of years before. I forgot this, and began listen to it yesterday, after much time ago. A good album, I prefered it more than IV.

I'd go with Toto. Starting listening to them in grade school. And, they had one of the best (of not THE best) drummers of all time. R.I.P., Jeff.
Agree. Isolation is a fine disc. Surprised Fergie left so soon, but thought Fahrenheit was an even better album. That one is still one of my favorites.
I've recently picked up the 90's Kingdom Of Desire and Tambu. Both extremely good--with the former being a bit more raw than anything before or since. Good stuff, though.

I think it's a bit suspect that Toto goes ahead in this poll. But of the comments I haven't read any pro DT comment so I guess their fans aren't interested in this section of the forum. I prefer DT but I'm not going to vote because this is the General Music Discussions section .
Toto is a nice band but I know only three great songs by them (Girl Goodbye, White Sister and 99) and on the first two it was just because of the great solos by Lukather. Pamela and Rosanna are nice songs.
I'm not into AOR for the last 20 years or so but I have to admit I loved the genre in the eighties. Toto and Foreigner were two of my great loves then. But there wasn't too much prog around then if I remember well ....

AOR is an excellent style to swim over it.
Thanks for the recommendations. You really should dig TOTO if you like AOR : albums 'fahrenheit' (with Joseph WIlliams on vocals, son of the composer John Williams) and 'isolation' are prime examples of their straight AOR phase. Others are more varied.
Other recommendations :
BOBBY KIMBALL's first solo album (vocalist for TOTO)
BOULEVARD, the album 'into the street is a must-have for any AOR fan.

Thanks to you. I do not recommend anything, just wrote some of the albums I remembered at that point of the night. Sure those are not the best, but good albums I love. An advice: they all belong to Hard Aor or Hard Melodic style. I like it more...
If you love soft aor there is a very good album called "Taking A Cold Look", by I-TEN and it´s supreme. Reedited now by Rock Candy.
I was listening 2 days ago Toto´s Isolation, because I like Frederiksen´s voice. A good one, I think I will listen the other one you´ve mentioned, Farenheit, and Boulevard too. Thanks.
Now I´m listening to Balance-In For The Count(1982). A good album too.

I see you like Pink Floyd as if I`m reading yore username correct i think you will find atleast the Toto album Tambu to sute yore taste, actualy are all Toto albums pre Jeffs death (Kingfom of Desire, Tambu, Mindfields and Falling in Between) quite Pink Floydish espesially the long ballads. the earliest records off Toto are more in the veine of Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, Fleetowood Mac and more jazz/blues/funk/soul/rock/pop/prog area while leter they become more Hard Rock/Fusion(jazz)/Blues/Neo-prog like band.

I wish all of us could find the answer to our questions in such beautiful, consistent logic as yours.
Hmm...not familiar with most Toto albums, so no vote. There are actually some similarities between the two broadly....polished, slick and a tendency to favour 'commercial' choices, also a tendency to be too tight, too perfect at times, sacrificing warmth and emotion in the process. Based on what I have heard, I am partial to DT because the early albums had some of the energy associated with metal and were tight and cohesive which I cannot say about their later material.

I've voted Toto.
They did not give me an (The) Astonishing.
They've been been show-offs like DT have (Systematic Chaos especially).
Lukather is a better songwriter than Petrucci if you ask me. Everything's in good measure.

Dream Theater. Not even remotely close.
Toto is the best example of very talented group with mediocre music output.

Toto - I enjoy AOR a lot more than progmetal though.

Two bands I don't listen to but then I have heard some DT albums and I do like a few of their tracks....can't say I have ever listened to a Toto album all the way through.
