Subject: Your Prog Subgenre?

I was just thinking that generally speaking, the sub-genres on PA are more than just classification, they generally all encompass different ideologies and approaches to music. For example, I think Neo-Prog bands are going to have a very different approach to the whats, whys and hows of music than, say, a RIO band. Obviously each band is going to differ on an individual level but I think that within each subgenre there is, consciously or not, a certain degree of union of minds.

So what particular PA sub-genre do you personally relate to the most? It doesn't necessarily have to be the one whose music you enjoy the most, just which "philosophy of prog" rings the most true to you.

(Note: This is a "just for fun" poll. It's not to attempt to discern which sub-genre is the best, or to divide and label members into different groups, or whatever).

ASIDE:

You know, we could probably make this into one of those cheesy personality tests: "Which PA Sub-Genre Are You?" You could fill out a bunch of questions and then it would process them and give you your results ("You are Heavy Prog. You're the life of the prog party! While you definately have an intellectual side, all you really want to do is rock out! Drink and screw till you pass out, and do it all in 15/8! Woohoo!"). Hah, all posting the results in our signatures, all the Zeuhl guys making fun of anyone who got Crossover, the board eventually distintegrating into factions and battling for supremacy. It'd be hilarious.

I am getting a little bored with traditional Progressive Metal. No one in the genre is doing anything new,but there is a wave of Italian PM bands that I like(Empyrios,Dynamic Lights,Twinspirits and Astra to name a few).

It would have to be a toss-up between Tech/Extreme and Experimental/Post Metal.Since I am listening to to ton of bands in the latter I will pick that.

My answer is probably obvious, but I also really enjoy jazz-rock/fusion.  I would say there's at least one band in almost every sub that I can enjoy.

Prog metal followed by symphonic. I'm starting to listen to a ton of tech/exteme prog metal, however.

Voted for progressive electronic, mainly because of the long and slow pieces and the lack of vocals.

I like a lot of PA's subgenres, but I voted for Eclectic prog. Bands like King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator and Gentle Giant are so important for me! I also enjoy symphonic prog, Canterbury, Jazz-rock/Fusion, some Krautrock, some Proto and I've been investigating the progfolk genre lately. I started with neo-prog and I still like some of the albums of the genre.

Well, I was going to say Neo or Symphonic but shoot, with your description of Heavy Prog I've got to embrace the lifestyle.  In the immortal words of John Jowitt at the end of IQ's show on Saturday, "Right, let's all get pissed".

Somebody will probably get in faster, but Rock Progressivo Italiano.

There are quite a number of categories I really love at the site, and a great many bands/artists from different categories.  I've found music to like from a band or artist in every category here (though it may not be representative for the category).  These days I'm mostly listening to music in JRF.  Generally I'm a more avant-oriented listener (and there are avant-oriented bands/ artists in lots of categories here).  Because I'm more avant-oriented, I will give a vote to RIO/Avant. Love lots of music there, and being a quirky person...  Love the RIO/Avant category, and one of the most consistently good ones for my ear (along with Canterbury, and then Zeuhl methinks).

Have you listened to the new album of Heart of Cygnus? A nice band somewhere between Melodic Progressive Metal and Heavy Prog, and I *really* like their songwriting.Smile

Pretty tough vote...

There are quite a few subgenres I really enjoy... my vote will go to eclectic prog in the end. Some of the most interesting prog bands can be found there. There is a wide variety of music within the Eclectic prog subgenre; from the heavy sounds of King Crimson to the avant-garde sound of Gnidrolog and the emotional VDGG. This really has some of my favorite bands. Of course I enjoy most of the other subgenres very much too.

This is really quite tough. When I joined the site, it would have been only symphonic or neo that really would have been considered seriously, with, maybe, eclectric thrown in because of Crimson, or heavy prog owing to my long standing love of Rush.

However, since joining the site, I have been introduced to so many new forms of prog, and RPI, in particular, now stands as one of my favourite sub genres.

Having said that, my love of Marillion, IQ, Pallas, and Twelfth Night still make neo my favourite sub genre, but with a hugely respectful nod to ALL sub genres of prog, even Canterbury Scene, which I am still struggling to enjoyConfused

Hmm, strong arguments could be made for Canterbury, Jazz/Fusion, Eclectic, RIO, RPI, and Zeuhl.  Canterbury has the laid back feeling with jazzy tinges, JR/F includes some big innovators, Eclectic can surprise you given the opportunity, RIO can make you question what all you really consider "normal", RPI is generally beautiful music, and Zeuhl shows you that it's alright to be yourself.  LOL  Oh, and Krautrock says it's alright to chill and just go with the flow (Halleluhwah, etc.)  So I'd say I identify most with those seven.  As for votes...I'm not sure, I'm feeling like I'll vote for either Canterbury, Zeuhl or Krautrock since I'm sure they'll all be semi-underrepresented in the vote.

Good point.  It does seem odd that Genesis and Kansas are in Symphonic while Marillion and IQ are not Confused

As I recall from my days in that group, I think the rationale has somewhat to do with the dates of the respective band's heydays.  I'm sure Iván will be along soon to explain.

i like first and formoust Crossover prog (Supertramp, ElO, Steely Dan and next i will gett into Talk Talk and Phiedaux) followd by Eclectic (King Crimson, Gentle Giant, A.C.T, i try to like VDGG and i will also get more into Procul Harum), Symphonic ( Yes, Genesis, ElP and Kansas need some more recomandations probably Flower Kings,  i owe one Tangent album), Prog Related (Asia, Roxy Music, 10cc and more of the more melodic types).

Tech/Extreme metal Evil Smile i like some bands such as Mastodon, Gojira, Meshuggah and Opeth

I voted for symphonic cos I like Genesis, ELP, Kansas, Yes, that's the kind of prog I lean toward in general, but it's actually very hard to choose. My favourite prog band is Pink Floyd, but I don't like all the other psychedelic/space rock bands as much as them. Maybe I should have voted for proto-prog or prog related since I considered myself a classic rock fan who likes some classic prog bands, rather than a prog fan.

By reviews I suppose that it's symphonic but the thing is that those bands labeled as symphonic covered different ground ex What do Focus Yes and Genesis or ELP have in common?

On the other hand there isn't a jazz fusion record that I don't enjoy so I may go for that subgenre

Posted By: Roland113

If I can make an observation, I think the original poster was looking for the subgenre that best describes your personality, not necessarily the one that you like the best.

If I can make a suggestion, when you vote for a sub-genre, why not tell us why you emulate that particular genre.  Me, I went with Heavy Prog based on the OP's description of "You are Heavy Prog. You're the life of the prog party! While you definately have an intellectual side, all you really want to do is rock out! Drink and screw till you pass out, and do it all in 15/8! Woohoo!"

Funny stuff right there.

Space/Psych, seeing as my favourite five or so albums would be considered the closest to that genre. If there was a Psych Metal, then that would be awesome. To be honest I like a lot of music, but in prog - it has to be trippy...

As someone said earlier, when I joined the site a couple years ago I would have said Symphonic.  But RPI is just so mesmerizing, so eclectic, beautiful, experimental, varied--really emodies everything I love about the other subs I love, like Symphonic, Eclectic, JRF, RIO, Heavy, Prog-Folk, Psych/Space, Canterbury, etc.

I'm going to give a cynical overview of each:

Canterbury: You're uber specialized in your own group of friends and are really too cool to get along with others just like you.

Crossover: While you tend to feel that you yourself are sophisticated you are really just one of those popular people that everyone hates.

Eclectic: You're one of those weird people who has some unusual interest in something nobody within one thousand miles cares about.

Experimental Post Metal: You sort of feel like you want to be agressive towards people, but mostly you're too lazy to be agressive and for the most part mopey.

Heavy Prog: You're one of those dudes that like their stuff pretty simple but feel-good all the time and while you say you're a sophisticated person, you really just like to chill out most of the time.

Indo Prog: Who cares?

Jazz-Rock/Fusion: You're one of those uber sophisticated people who are beyond everybody else and nobody likes because in terms of intelligence you're too good for everyone and you don't really fit in with others.

Krautrock: You're just a weird guy who spends his days at home in a smoke filled room.

Neo-Prog: You are a straight up poser because you try to look intelligent but really you're nothing special.

Post/Math Rock: You're a lazy person who thinks just doing everything simple and good works for everything so you don't actually have to put forth any effort.

Prog Folk: You're one of those history buffs who know too much about stuff everybody forgot about a year after it happened.

Progressive Electronic: You're a computer nerd who spends all his days tweaking stuff around just to get a slightly different result and doing it over, and over, and over, and over again.

Prog Metal: While you have fooled some people into thinking you're a badass, you really aren't and you're mostly an annoying person who likes to show off. Also your voice is too high for your own good.

Psych/Space Rock: You like getting together with friends and tripping out. You attend every peace rally there is on every substance there is.

RIO/Avant: You are simply weird. Even the people who think they're an unusual person can't stand to be around you because you are so embarrassing.

RPI: You're like a Canterbury dude, but you're foreign.

Symphonic Prog: You're interesting, intelligent, and unique, just like everyone else in the genre.

Tech/Extreme: While you're focused on being in this sophisticated group that everyone else is in, you're more focused on being agressive than being good at stuff.

Zeuhl: In an attempt to be so unique, you tried to create your own personality, and now there's a group just like you that's uniquely weird all in the same ways.

Prog Related: You're an underachiever and don't really care about being noticed.

Proto-prog: You were the first to do anything, and in that sense, you're the real deal and really the only one who anyone gives respect to. Good on you!

I am voting for Canterbury, partly to open its account Tongue and partly because at least for me it's more 'reliable' in that more often than not, I will love a Canterbury album.  I find the psychedelic quirk meets jazz chops formula irresistible.

Same for me - although I agree with Jody that this sub is becoming a little stale for me too, it just nudges Tech/Extreme out as it is the style I can listen to at almost any time, where as I have to be in the right mood for Tech/Extreme - Post/Experimental would come third, followed by Eclectic and/or Psyche-Space.

Oddly, I only like some Crossover - while I consider myself to be knowledgable in that sub, much of it leaves me cold and unmoved - when it's good it's very very good, but when it's bad... Wink
