VdGG and Tangent are two bands with certain relationship :
David Jackson (my favourite sax player) played in both bands
Andy Tillison is certainly admirer of Peter Hammill and his mighty Generator and these influences are certainly audible on Tangent's albums, both in vocal and instrumental department. Sometimes here and there, sometimes more often.

As a big fan of pH/VdGG (probably my the most favourite band of all times), I've tried to love The Tangent too. But I failed with every their release. Not they are bad, I count them as one of the better bands in today's modern symphonic prog, I like their perfect interplay between Tillison's keys and other instruments (mostly Theo Travis' winds). But mainly their vocal melodies I find far less interesting compared to VdGG, the emotional impact of The Tangent never reached the heights of pH/VdGG for me.

So, I'm just more curious if The Tangent are interesting for fans of VdGG. I don't expect ordinary poll VdGG vs. Tangent to be too dramatic.

Many thanks for your comments.

Thanks for a very interesting post, I really wasn't aware of the links you describe between the bands.
I've tried to get into VDGG over the years, I've really tried, but they're still on the outer for me.
Tangent are much more to my taste.

Have to hear more of the Tangent yet, but what I have heard sounds interesting. I think I prefer VdGG, but not by far. I'm in for both bands.

12 or 13 years ago, I was a huge fan of more melodic prog like Marillion, Genesis and Pink Floyd. VdGG together with Gentle Giant stayed almost unnoticed to me. I started to re-explore prog and at the beginning I was, with some reservations, satisfied with e.g. The Flower Kings. The Tangent didn't exist at that time, so I mention this band, because I find their approach similiar to The Tangent : in most songs somewhat poppy re-interpratation of classic 70's prog.
But I was very curious, why some fans consider these two specific groups as a pinnacle of prog music and I've ordered "H to He" by VdGG and started to listen to it. Yes, they are different - it's always much more difficult to uncover its beauty in music, which is different to our current "formulas" of good music.
But after multiple listens solely to "H to He" I started to remember its wonderful opener "Killer" note by note and started to love the magical world of Peter Hammill. His music literally "changed my life".
My advice is : don't give up Smile, don't try to find in VdGG elements you love in other band's music. They are unique, but sooo magical.

Van der Graaf Generator, by far not only to Tangent, but many others.

I don't love either.  But, VdGG.

You could stack most any other band up there with VdGG and this would be a blowout, but when that other band is The Tangent, I had to laugh.

VdGG by far.

I prefer VDGG by far, one reason being that PH is an infinitely better singer than Andy Tillison at least to my ears (more body in his voice)

I love The Tangent, but lately I've been starting to really like VdGG, not as much as to love 'em though.

VDGG by quite a long way.

I've nothing against The Tangent. Good band; very tight, melodic and dynamic, but VDGG are classic and timeless.

I'd be REALLY surprised if the Tangent won this poll.
VDGG by miles.

The Tangent is a decent band and I would like to say I love them but I've only heard one album.  I've heard many VDGG albums and love all of them so they are definitely my choice

It's certainly no surprise VdGG overbear The Tangent.

But what's interesting :
only small number (6 out of 53) of VdGG's fans is satisfied with The Tangent
and
only one (out of 15) of Tangent's fans likes VdGG (or could we say is able to get into VdGG?)

I would be curious, if such a principle is valid in larger scale :

Do fans of adventurous 70's prog like VdGG, KC and Gentle Giant dislike current popular symphonic (retro) bands like The Tangent, Transatlantic, The Flower Kings or Neal Morse?

I voted for VdGG, I've given Tangent a couple of chances but so far it has sounded very uninteresting. VdGG I love very much.

As a fan of adventurous 70s prog like the ones you mentioned, I don't really dislike the newer bands you mentioned (I own a couple of TFK albums and the Transatlantic debut), but in my experiece those bands can't keep their act together for the duration of an entire album (which in some cases might be three or four times the length of some 70s albums). Let's say H to He or any classic Graaf album for that matter is hugely enjoyable from start to finish, but all TFK albums I've heard make me lose interest at some point despite the numerous good parts.
