I´d like to think of them as one album, because they feel so similar. I voted AFTK based on the ferociousness of Cygnus pt 1 and the brilliance of Xanadu - plus The Trees is one of the few Rush songs, where I really enjoy the lyrics.

I don't really rate A Farewell to Kings that highly - good but not great.
Hemispheres for me.

I think that the strong songs of AFTK are:
1. Xanadu.
2. Cygnus X1.
3. A Farewell
And on Hemispheres are:
1. Hemispheres.
2. La Villa
3. Circumstances.
Just for the record.

I really enjoy A Farewell to Kings considering it to be the best Rush album, while I consider Hemispheres to be full-fledged Prog Rock that utterly failed compositionally speaking.

AFTK.......due to the strength of Xanadu. Not many songs come close to what Xanadu accomplishes.

Seconded. "Xanadu" is by far my favourite Rush song of the Seventies, a true masterpiece.

I love Farewell to Kings, but Hemispheres is perfect. The title track is Rush's most successful epic; Circumstances ROCKS and doesn't get enough love (I adore the super-busy drum and bass interplay under a relatively slow melody); the Trees has a grreat use of percussion and is anti-socialism (always a good way to win points with me) and La Villa Strangiato is just an amazing display of instrumental virtuosity.

This looks like it's going to be close. But its not in my head. Here's the thing for me. Cygnus X Bk1 The Voyage is the whole journey for me just the start wins it for me and then Bk2 Hemispheres is a bit Rush by numbers (There I said it - run away..) sorry. The title track to AFTK is great and Xanadu is a marvel and then the shorts are better than the shorts on hemispheres its a win win situation.
But of course I could be wrong! ?
And I would give it to AFTK for the acoustic start to AFTK as well.

It's really hard to choose between the two for me. I bought "A FArewell To Kings" on vinyl back in 1978 and still remember how impressed i was with "Xanadu".I really feel that was the first really progressive tune i'd heard.

Both great albums indeed (both are my favorites from Rush.)
I'm going to have to go with "Hemispheres," but I do prefer the cover art to "A Farewell to Kings."

Actually the only two Rush CDs I have and I deliberately bought them together because you can't have one Cygnus without the other. I'm going for Hemispheres for having La Villa.
(I know there's some Rush fans here thinking, what??? you only have two Rush albums??? FREAK!!! )

Hmm, if you count LPs and CDs, there are only two Genesis albums I don't have. You wouldn't happen to only have the two I don't have by any chance? That would be really weird.

I never got the Mama album or We Can't Dance. I did borrow Three Sides Live from someone and taped the studio tracks to a cassette. I could digress further, but this is a thread about a couple of Rush albums.

I love both albums. Whenever I listen to one, I always put on the next. However, I have to give Hemispheres the edge, because "Circumstances" could be my all time favorite Rush track - it doesn't matter who I'm in the mood to listen to, I'll always enjoy that song. The only thing I don't like about A Farewell To Kings is "Closer to the Heart". It's not that it's a bad song, it's just been overplayed. Still, both albums are very close.

Well, Hemispheres side one is a dreadful, steaming turd of wafer-thin classical mythology reference, terrible word choice and a complete wrecking of the concept of pt. 1 with rather second rate and repetitive music. A Farewell To Kings is one of the best Rush albums, however, and I'm voting for that.
