If I missed your favorite band then choose #25 "Other". My top 3 are Zappa, Kansas and Starcastle (gasp), however I like just about every one of the 24 bands listed (that I have heard that is).

Utopia, Styx & Spocks Beard. Could never get into Zappa, he was just too American for me, which is probably difficult to understand unless your British!

although he despised people in my particular profession…
was crass…
blatantly vulgar…
rude…
and seemed to have little tolerance for other humans who were not on his “side”…
zappa was the
most intensely creative...
exceptionally prolific...
and most gifted progressively-oriented rock and roll musician to ever emerge from the united states.

Kansas out of this list, tho I love SB, Styx & Queensryche too.... what happened to Enchant, Fates Warning, Iluvatar & Salem Hill?

I went with Echolyn. They got a new CD coming out soon.

Salem Hill, Discipline, Lands End, Matthew Parmenter, Man on Fire, Singularity, Syzygy.... lots of missing bands, but it shows that there are a lot of QUALITY prog bands playing in THE USA.

Don't forget Protokaw, Nima and Merge, IZZ, Cryptic Vision
I went with Kansas because they broke new ground for America at the time 1974. I love FZ though and Return to Forever.
Very good list and I agree with Danbo so many GREAT American bands out there right now.

Yes I didn't list Protokaw, Singularity, Salem Hill, Magellan, Akacia, IZZ, Syzygy, The Muffins, Charming Hostess, The Red Masque, Bad Dog U, Iluvitar, Ad Infinitum, Albatross, Cryptic Vision, Far Corner, Eccentric Orbit, Discipline, Dreadnaught, Azigza, Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, Frogg Cafe, Absolute Zero, Symphony X, A Triggering Myth, O.S.I., Avant Garden, Somnambulist, Niacin, Tool, Jordan Rudess, Land of Chocolate, Fates Warning, Shadow Gallery, Cairo, Crucible, Hamster Theatre, Tony Levin, Bigelf, Planet X, Under the Sun, Platypus, Enchant, Mastermind, Trey Gunn, Kalaban, David Sancious, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Al Di Meola, Pat Metheny, Crack the Sky, Quill, Lift, The Load, Captain Beyond, Captain Beefheart and MANY others.
I can't fit them ALL on the list so I choose best I could. I did forget a couple though like Salem Hill, Discipline, Tool, Syzygy and IZZ. I would have put them on. I didn't put any jazz guys like Miles Davis on because I wanted to keep it mostly pure prog.
I think the only BIG error I made was not including The Mars Volta as a choice!

I'll skip this one if you don't mind. I only have Spock's Beard, DT and some Queensryche in my collection but for what it's worth DT gets my vote out of these three.

No problem limeyrob. If you want to try some other American bands, I would recommend Kansas (Song for America or Point of Know Return), Syzygy (Allegory of Light), Enchant (Tug of War) and Echolyn (As the World or Mei)

Frank Zappa, probably. The Mahavisnu Orchestra is another favorite of mine.

Todd Rundgren & Utopia for sure. Certainly Todd is the most talented of the bunch with Neal Morse a very close second

Todd Rundgren really should be listed here. Just listing Utopia limits TR too much and the majority of his great prog work was on his solo albums---from AWizardATrueStar all the way through Initiation, and the album Todd deserves special mention because some of it is the most etheral spaced out rock I've ever heard.
I enjoy Todd more than Zappa, but haven't really given Zappa as much of a chance. There always seems to be too much talking and joking. I need intensity of emotion, not glib witticisms in my music.

I still have to discover Zappa, so pretending I didn't see his name in the list, I choose Kansas. I don't like them as much anymore as I did, but I used to listen a lot to some of their older work, and really enjoyng it too.
Echolyn did some great things as well. Djam Karet has a fresh attitude to prog-rock.
Couldn't get into Starcastle. Too much of a Yes-clone for me, I guess.
