Welcome to Round 1 Division 26 of Battle of the Prog Bands!  This time we have more Progressive Metal bands.  Your choices are Symphony X, Queensryche, Pain of Salvation, and Ayreon.  Vote for your favorite, and the band with the most votes will move onto Round 2!

Here is the tournament thus far:

As I haven't heard any of these bands, I'm not voting.

PoS, made two of the greatest Prog Metal albums of all-time.

As much as I love Operation: Mindcrime, I hate the rest of Queensryche's albums.
Symphony X, I find, gets old pretty fast; too much power metal influnce.
Pain of Salvation it is!

To be honest, I have only heard a few albums from each, so I don't feel that confident to pick any. No vote.

But... you're on the prog metal team LOL

Let me guess: If you did it, it would be between Isis, Pelican, Senmuth, and Agalloch

Probably - these bands are my achillies heel when it comes to prog metal.

I voted Ayreon.  As much as I love Pain of Salvation, their last 2 albums (and from the sound of it, the upcoming Road Salt One) are big disappointments for me.  Ayreon doesn't disappoint.

This is the hardest poll so far for me!!! Love The Perfect Element...but also absolutely LOVE Operation Mindcrime..... but then im not a big fan of the rest of Queensryche material.... buti'm also disappointed by more recent POS releases....ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh so close.............. I went Queensryche by a very fine knats whisker...

Even if I would know these bands well enough I think it's a hard one: as far as I can tell, they're about equally good. No vote.

Queenryche. A bit classic now. PoS new album is funnyLOL. I like Southern rock, Tom Waits influences there though. But that vocal and bombastic moments - no, it's too much.

Symphony X for sure at same level with Queensryche.

PoS is the only one I still listen to frequently.
Can't bear one more minute of Symphony X, and Queensryche... not the same level in my opinion.
Ayreon come as second: less consistent and more "pompous" (please don't start with prog IS pompous, or seen as such), but I like many things they've done and still play them from time to time.
This position stands until PoS's next album. If it looks anything like the last one, I would reconsider my positionning.

Glad to see Riverside ended up winning last round Clap On this one, I've got to go for Ayreon (because of Into the Electric Castle) but Pain of Salvation is not far behind in second.

No vote from me this time, I don't have enough material of these bands. I know Ayreon had some nice moments.

Pain of Salvation, far above anything else in this list.

I love The Human Equation, Into the Electric Castle and Dream Sequencer.  And 01011001 is growing on me (which I never would have guessed).  Alas, I chose Pain of Salvation.  Remedy Lane and TPE are just too good.

Riverside beat DT.... Blasphemy!!!!!

Well, in this poll the choice is easily PoS for me. Best prog metal band ever IMO. Here's how I would rank them anyway...

1. PoS (by 999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999 million quadrillion miles)
2. Queensryche (for Operation Mindcrime alone)
3. Areon
4. Symphony X

I was so eager to vote this time around, but forgot Fates Warning were not involved. LOL

I'll give it to Queensryche, but they really don't stand a chance.

Including Fates Warning on this poll would have made my decision even harder. My vote could go to anyone except for Ayreon. PoS it is, because of Entropia and The Perfect Element (and because I don't want Ayreon to win by any means)

Tough decision! It really came down to this - which group has the most "highest rated" (by me) songs in my iPod collection? Ayreon came out ahead, on a percentage basis.

This with 3 and 4 switched.  I have been looking forward (fearfully) toward this round because so many people on this forum like ayreon and imo it would be an embarrassment to all of us if they beat PoS LOL

I am very mad that Riverside beat Dream Theater. In my honest opinion even though Riverside is good they are aren't or ever was as original as Dream Theater was at several points in there career. Images and Words, Awake, and yes even Train of Thought( I know a lot of people will disagree with me there) were all more progressive, pushing the boundaries then Riverside ever was. Yes I think Second Life Syndrome and Anno Domini High Definition were indeed great albums they just weren't as unique as Dream Theater's. Yes Dream Theater laid some eggs in the past ( last two cds) but over all i think they are much better. I personally think Lunatic Soul is more interesting than Riverside but thats just me.

Now, Im sorry I ranted. I Love PAIN OF SALVATION they are amazing and each cd is different from their previous release. thats why they got my vote.

I would find it hilarious if some obscure band on the "tournament chart" won this poll much like how L-Block won the GameFAQ character contest of 07.

I almost forgot about this one completely!

Poll's over!  The winner of Round 1 Division 26 of Battle of the Prog Bands is Pain of Salvation, with an honorable mention to Ayreon.  Pain of Salvation will now move onto Round 2.  See you at the next match of Battle of the Prog Bands.
