For those of you who have seen it

(everyone else DON'T READ)

The movie starring DeCaprio "Inception" was about dreams within dreams.

the ending showed that perhaps the DeCaprio's character, Cobb, was within a dream that he thought was reality.

the spinning top span indefinitely to signify a dream state. The top he span continued to spin at the end so perhaps it was a dream he had become locked into and reality no longer existed,

some thoughts

was Cobb dead and locked in a dream?
was Cobb within Michael Caines characters dream?
whose dream was it he was inside?
was it his wife's dream?
was Cobb trapped in a labyrinth and the girl sent in to get him out, therefore was in limbo from the first frame?
maybe Cobb was a danger to everyone and as a risk the dream team decided to lock in his own dream where he can do no more harm, a world he would be happy in with his kids and wife?

any thoughts?

The top wavers a couple of times before the screen goes black. Which could indicate that it is in fact real. Wink I've had tops spin for much longer than that before ultimately stopping.

Something to think about.

^ Funny LOL

But yeah, I don't really think it's the type of ending that's even meant to be interpreted. The whole point of it is to be ambiguous. But of course, we can always speculate.

I'd like to think he did in fact get out, and the top was merely spinning for an unusually long time but would ultimately stop. However, if he WAS in a dream, I have no doubt that it was his own, and nobody else's. Mainly because the angle he sees his kids from is the exact same angle he saw them from the last time he saw them, which would indicate that it's merely imagery from within his own head, based on a memory.

nice one!
i saw this film last night. It really sticks with you doesnt it...
it would have been fun if after the credits when everyone had left cinema the top was seen again and fell off the table.

i read this on another forum

Does Cobb’s totem keep spinning at the end or is it about to fall off the table?
A: The fact that the film cuts away before we know for certain suggests that they want us to keep guessing. But we think it kept spinning. Here’s our reasoning: Note that at the end of the film Cobb’s kids haven’t aged. They match exactly his memory of them. A memory which must almost surely by now be out of date, since he’s been away from them for many months. Though he finally sees their faces, otherwise they look exactly as he envisioned them. They're even wearing the same clothes. In reality, his kids would now be older and different than his memories of them. This could suggest that Cobb is still in the dream and the top does indeed keep spinning after the credits roll.

Alternate Theory Aaron points this out in our comments section: "In the opening moments you get a glimpse of Leo's hand. Specifically, he's wearing his wedding ring. Now, if you follow the rest of the movie keeping an eye out for this you will notice that he only has the ring on when he's in the dream world. At the end of the movie he isn't wearing the ring." If the ring only appears when he's in a dream and he's not wearing at the end of the film, that could be confirmation that in fact, the top does stop spinning after the credits and Cobb is at last in the real world.

It certainly means the whole film could be a dream.

or this...

Ariadne was never in limbo...she and Cobb went into a fourth dream level to retrieve Fischer. Because the fourth dream level was not planned (Ariadne, the Architect, did not design a fourth level) and since they were in Cobb's dream, it was populated with the construct of his previous time in limbo.

Regardless of what dream level they died, Cobb and Saito can make it back from limbo once they realize they are in limbo and kill themselves...and at this point, the sedative had worn off so killing themselves would wake them up as usual. Since all the other dream levels had dissolved (Eames, Arthur and Yusuf were all awake), they woke up in "reality" on the plane.

The point is, unless Christopher Nolan comes out and says "it was all a dream" or "it was reality", etc., everyone is going to have their own OPINION as to what happened in the movie and that everyone's personal belief as to what happened can be correct.

It was a very entertaining movie. Though the ambiguous ending was incredibly easy to predict.

Great movie.  I see it as a movie whose ending is basically completely open-ended; any thoughts or ideas are applicable.

The film seemed pretty cut and dry to me, especially for its layers. It had a wonderful ending too.

Great film. Reminded me of both Gurdjieff and Castaneda.

(I think it looked like it stopped spinning.)

Great entertainment. I bit OTT and convoluted like the ending of Matrix 2. Good home movie stuff for future reruns.

That ending parody was hilarious, especially when it goes on the floor.

I dunno, I'm actually going off Nolan. It's kinda of a cop-put ending. Yes it's deliciously ambiguous and open ended but I think this was the kind of movie where actually giving some concrete would've been a real coup de gras, to present a definitive version of events. Instead it all sort of quietly dissolves into the director seemingly saying "Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't, we'll never know... heck I dunno..." and it's hard to stifle a yawn really. It's a movie that requires you to do the hard work because it's a prompt for you to have conversations attempting to come up with your own kickass ending/explanation in order to justify everything. And I kinda thought that was the filmmaker's job.

A concrete ending hardly has to be a commercial ending.

It's like the fantasy series the Wheel of Time so many loose threads you can strangle a whale with its length and stil got enough to walk across the Atlantic Occean without problems.

loved the movie Leo is full of suprises in roles he chooses, he most have some good agents or a realy good intuition to chose the right scripts
