Subject: Which DT Member is the Easiest to Replace?
Date Posted: September 09 2010 at 00:12
I'm just wondering if most DT aficionados feel like Mike is the biggest loss to the band or are some excited for the change this will bring? Now I'm no fan (at all), but I feel like Labrie is considered to be the weakest link by most standards. However I've heard many comment on the reserved nature of Myung so maybe he would've been the softest blow? Then again, what's one more keyboardist?
*No, "I would have preferred no one left."

I'm no DT fan, but still feel confident that it's Labrie. He could be replaced by most any old cheese (preferable a Camembert).
And he always has his (rock) opera career to fall back on as one of the three tenors:

I dont think you can replace anyone... There is no Dream theater without any of these incredible musicians...

Labrie no question. I know alot of people say that even though he isn't the greatest vocalist, he fits their sound and it wouldn't be the same without them, but I think those comments tend to come from people with a heavy bias. I think DT would be much more interesting with a different vocalist, but without changing their sound too much.

For real?
And Labrie without doubt.

There would be no Pink Floyd without Syd Barrett...
There would be no Genesis without Peter Gabriel...
I think that everyone can be replaced, even Mike Portnoy (a great drummer by the way), though it may be a sore loss in the beginning.
Edit: But the easiest to replace would be James LaBrie, I think...

I think Pertucci and Portnoy are the hardest to replace. The other three would be no problem.

I personally think the easiest to replace would be Myung...not LaBrie, as many others are saying...

They could probably replace Myung with cardboard cut-out and nobody would notice.

I would say Rudess would be the easiest to replace. To me, if Labrie were to be replaced, that would have the most significant effect to their sound. Like it or not, his voice is THE signature sound of Dream Theater that sets them apart from other metal bands. Granted, they could probably find a younger singer with an undamaged voice to clone him, but otherwise a different voice would result in a significantly different sound. For most detractors, this would probably be to the better, but to most fans I think that this would be a negative.

The easiest to replace? Well Portnoy obviously.
Actually it seems that DT finds it easiest to replace the keyboard player every few years.

I can't believe how low Myung is. I'm sorry, I like all the musicians, but Myung just seems like nothing special compered to the other four. He plays good bass, but nothing really special, and it's usually so low in the mix anyways...

Easy now. I enjoy Myung but as the person above me stated, his output is usually low in the mix.

Sure DT has a decent sized diehard following but the constant question is, "could the band be even more successful without Labrie?" I think the technical wizardry is what attracts most people in the first place, not the vocals. What it boils down to is your willingness to stay once the vocals kick in.

Definitly Labrie

LaBrie is who I wish would be replaced at some point...
BUT...
The EASIEST to replace while still maintaining the "DT Signature Sound" would be Myung or Rudess. Both of their parts could be replicated with anyone as long as they had access to their tones respectively.
There are many good bassists and keyboardists, and lately Rudess just uses a lot of odd sounds, so technique should be no problem!

^^ Absurd.
Anyways, no vote because none can be replaced. And by the looks of this poll, people think that "easiest to replace" and "your least favourite" are synonyms.

This is true! He has been kicked into the corner during the production process more often than not. Great player.

Replacing involves getting someone out, then getting someone else in - so, Portnoy, half of the work being done already.

The one I would like to be replaced is LaBrie. All the others sounded perfect for the band. I'm not so sure Rudess would be so easy to replace, but the band has already worked with another 2 keyboard players before him and it was alright (at least about half DT fans liked Moore better).

It was a rhetorical question: The best drummer in the world can't be replaced... and certainly not easy.

Rudess, because have passed a lot of keyboardists and DT is going on. LaBrie is not the best singer but is a very good front man for DT and I think is the balance in DT.

Fixed.
Plenty of drummers on Portnoy's level. Even MP himself admitted it in his last interview. He claimed the hardest part wouldn't be finding someone who has the chops he does because you could find a thousand others, but finding someone who's willing and capable of taking on all the other tasks in the band will be extremely difficult.

I'm not sure who'd be easiest but hardest would be Petrucci.

I could somehow deal with Portnoy, Rudess and Myung being replaced, so I choose Portnoy, because I'm fine with it at the moment. It's a huge surprise, but even though he's one of the greatest drummers of all time, Dream Theater has to move on without him.
Petrucci is my enormous influence, and it would be horrible if he decided to leave, but if there is a member of DT that I find almoast irreplaceable, it's actually James LaBrie. I've grown to love his voice, and I really enjoy his stage presence, he's such an amazing guy.

This thread is bad. People is voting for the one they dislike, not the one that could be easier to replace. I can't see a singer that could sing such a different range of styles and techniques in songs like Space-Dye Vest, Surrounded, Prophets of War, As I Am and The Count of Tuscanny, with many many more songs.
You can dislike his voice, but you should need three or four vocalists to cover all the different ranges of him...
I think Rudess is the one. Sure, no keyboardist can cover his skills, but just as Sherinian did, a new keyboard player could change a little bit the style...

Well, how can I answer that question? I'm not inclined to say that it's any of the intrumentalists, because I'm pretty sure they all contribute to the creative process. But, then again, LaBrie was picked because his voice felt right for DT, and it's the right voice for the job; skill isn't such an issue as personality here IMO. So, it's a difficult question.
Overall, though... it's probably James. I love him and all, but everyone else contributes a lot more material, as far as I know.

It doesn't matter Portnoy founded DT, any member out of progress and positive contribution must be out of a team. I'm very happy Portnoy leaves DT, I love DT and consider it's urgent to grow up the band.

This. I think Myung would be easiest to replace. DT's Bass has never stuck out as anything special for me.

Just an opinion, Myung is not only a great bassist is a very good musician because he plays for DT not for himself.
He can play 4,5 and 6 strings bass, fretless bass, stick and plays tapping, 3 fingers techniques, slapping and harmonics.

LaBrie. Not only is he the most replaceable, but he needs to be replaced.
