I think you posted this in the wrong place, but in any event, I haven't really been into alternative rock for a few years. "Songs For the Deaf" by Queens of the Stone Age is one of my all-time favs, however, as is Rage Against The Machine's "The Battle for Los Angeles"(guess it depends if you count them as alternative rock, though).

What does alternative even mean? You just listened some mainstream bands.

Uh, OK Computer?   And I don't know if Grace can be called alternative rock, if yes, then both of these are amongst my all time favourite albums.  I also like Muse's Absolution and Soundgarden's Superunknown but haven't explored this genre deeply.

Origin of symmetry for sure. But yeah, this thread should be moved.

It's a genre term, dude. It showed up after 1989.

There's no way he likes a post-1989 album more than KC. LOL

I love a whole bunch of alt rock albums, the first that comes to mind is:

And although more lo-fi and indie than alt, Guided By Voices is become a real favorite of mine:

What does alternative mean?

Do 'wierd' indie bands who ended up becoming stadium filling rock legends like The Cure and REM count?

Radiohead anyone..?? Oh no they're prog rock aren't they..but that's pretty alternative right? But then they outsell most other acts in the history of rock music..that's not very alternative....

I dont know. Throbbing Gristle...

Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Nirvana, The Verve, Oasis, The Cure, Muse, Jellyfish, R.E.M.; all considered "Alternative" at some point in time...and I like them all.

Muse are a stadium filling rock legend now. I don't see why they're "alternative" - they're pretty mainstream now - hit albums and singles etc.

Can I count Aphrodite's Child's 666 as my fave alternative album of the moment?

"Alternative" isn't taken literally anymore just as "Progressive" isn't...it's a genre tag...

History has shown bands like Nirvana and R.E.M. to be Pop-oriented Rock bands...but when they came out they were "Alternative" or "Grunge" or whatever so that's what sticks...

Def Leppard is not "Metal" but they still get tagged that way because of when they came out...

Alternative:\al*ter"na*tive\, n. [cf. f. alternative, ll. alternativa.] 1. an offer of two things, one of which may be chosen, but not both; a choice between two things, so that if one is taken, the other must be left. there is something else than the mere alternative of absolute destruction or unreformed existence.

So alternative means the absolute destruction of music.
(jokin' LOL)
