So I'm thinking about hosting a tournament, similar to the Prog Giants' one I did not that long ago. This time the competitors will be individual artists without their respective bands! Now I just need your help to narrow down which 25 are the most respected artists in Prog... then we'll carry on in the polls-lounge!

Feel free to say which artists you think I should definitely take off the list, which you aren't sure about, and who should definitely get on the list. At the moment the list is as follows:

Andrew Latimer
Geddy Lee
Neil Peart
Keith Emerson
Greg Lake
Ian Anderson
Steven Wilson
Robert Fripp
John Wetton
Bill Bruford
Jon Anderson
Chris Squire
Steve Howe
Rick Wakeman
Mikael Åkerfeldt
Daniel Gildenlow
Devin Townsend
Robert Wyatt
Roger Waters
David Gilmour
Peter Gabriel
Phil Collins
Tony Banks
Steve Hackett
Frank Zappa
Christian Vander
Peter Hammill
David Jackson
Kerry Minnear
Ray Shulman
John Petrucci
Mike Portnoy
Mike Oldfield
Richard Sinclair

Wow! I'll have to think about this. My first choice for deletion would be Phil Collins. The guy is talented but but no giant of prog for me. A few I'm not familiar with.

The only person I would tentatively consider removing is Daniel Gildenlow, but that's only because I know little about him. Hardly a good reason for removal..just a lesson to me to listen to more music!

Lets face it, whoever fires first and says 'such and such' should go, there will be a volley of objection from that artists admirers! Good luck..

You're damn right there'll be objections. Since I'm a PoS fan, I'm compelled to object.Wink

I'd leave the list as it is, do a poll, and ask members why they voted.

I think John Petrucci should not be included.
He's certainly a great guitarist, but calling him a "great prog artist"... Well, his solo work is not exciting enough, imo. One might argue, but he's more of a craftsman than a prog-artist.

I think Steve Vai should be included there)

This is probably the best approach.

OK.

I'll present these 34 artists in two groups, and go from there. Except I will replace Petrucci with McLaughlin! You guys made me remember that McLaughlin destroyed him in a recent poll...

Thanks.

Where's Livgren?  The founding father of American prog?  And Thijs van Leer?  And Neal Morse?

I guess it doesn't really matter, though, because I'm voting for Wakeman anyway.

These polls (tournaments) tend to become popularity contests with the real important individuals over looked.

David Sylvian is a great artist, one of my absolute favourites, but I've never considered him a prog artist (not in the same obvious way as the artists on the above list, anyway).
