Let's not forget his serious roles, he was after all, an actor first and foremost. My favourite straight film is the SF classic "Forbidden Planet"

RIP Leslie. Can't imagine a spoof film without him.  One of my favorites was Mel Brooks Dracula Dead and Loving it with the late Harvey Korman.  Not only did these guys make you laugh they had a great time making the films and it showed.

Frank (Leslie Nielsen) : That's the red-light district. I wonder why Savage is hanging around down there.

Ed (Kennedy): Sex, Frank?

Frank: Uh, no, not right now, Ed.

This is sad news indeed.  Airplane is a fantastic film and the best of that genre.  Nielsen was a fantastic actor too.

In pace requiescat, Leslie.
