Which bands are you a fan boy of?
For me the biggie is Jethro Tull.
For years I refused to buy the Jethro Tull Christmas Album because I don't do christmas albums because they're rubbish. But this year I realised I don't really have any christmasy music and guess what. The depths I will sink to for my fix.
I mean I don't think I mindlessly love everything they do (I'll openly knock A and Catfish Rising as being a bit rubbish) and have a real, articulate appreciation of their music but my 27 hour 349 song Jethro Tull library which doesn't just include their official discography but goes beyond it and also 3 hours and 51 Ian Anderson songs makes it hard to not look like an addict.
What about you?

I'd like to ask all confessees to include a tally of the number of songs and length of music you have by the artist so we can see who the biggest nutcake is.
47 hours of Crimson is pretty shocking, 64 of Zappa not so much given that he released 8 albums a week.

Anything Toby Driver related, so thats all maudlin of the Well and Kayo Dot studio albums (4 each), Toby's solo album and the first Tarta Lamb album, plus the Live in Bonn CD-R that came with Coyote when I pre-orderd it from KD's website. The new EP, Stained Glass, is on order (along with a KD t-shirt), and I donated $35 to the Tarta Lamb II recording so I'll get that in both CD-R and Vynil sometime early next year. I also bought Tusk's The Resistant Dreamer because Driver contributed on one of the songs. In total thats 11 albums with 76 songs over 9 hours 20 minutes.

The have had a very interesting evolution. I & II were the most tradtional Zeuhl sounding with a hint of punkiness. They had a collection of female vocalists that produced vocal sounds, but no real words. I love all the albums. Skin(V) is the only one that I can live without, it is basically 2 long songs. II,IV,and VI are me favorites. I have actually met them. They are very humble and beautiful people.

Let's see...what bands have I spent untold amounts of time, money, and heartache over? What bands have compelled me to hunt down every single demo, every single studio outtake, every single cover track played live and recorded on a crappy recorded stuffed into someone's back pocket? Let me see...
Queen. First love, and still going strong. I've got about two albums' worth of unreleased goodness; still waiting for Queen Productions to capitalize on the massive fan appetite AND RELEASE A RARITIES BOX SET, DAMMIT.
The Doors. So many of their outtakes are incredible. Also, I genuinely think that Orange County Suite is the best song Jim Morrison ever wrote.
Def Leppard. A bit embarrassing, I suppose, but I love these guys.
Rufus Wainwright. Not prog, but perfection. Has more unreleased material than released, which can make the process of tracking down songs kind of arduous.
T. Rex. Just a huge Marc Bolan fan. The Unchained box set is a priceless treasure.
Kansas. Another primal love. I remember how excited I became when I discovered they'd recorded an original Christmas song for an album by The December People. Bought the whole album for that single track.
There are definitely others; a lot of the bands I listen to have great hard-to-find material. But these were some of my first true obsessions.

My name is Dean and I am a Pink Floyd fanboi.
My iPlod contains 69 hours 28 minutes 13 seconds of Pink Floyd material. This tally does not include solo releases by Barrett, Waters, Gilmour, Wright or Mason, of which I own most of everything they ever released.
I also consider myself to be a fanboi of The Enid, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Savatage, Pain Of Salvation, Ayreon, Paradise Lost, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Toyah, Cocteau Twins, Alison Goldfrapp, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Bauhaus and Fields of the Nephilim.
Next on my iPlod total playing time list (skipping over 54 hours of my own music and 35 hours of Philip Glass) would be Porcupine Tree at 20 hours 11 minutes 14 seconds (which does not include SWilson solo, IEM, Bass Communion, Blackfield, No Man and that album he did with Fish (Sunsets on Empire?) - I own most of everything SWilson ever released and a fair bit of what he has produced).
I *think* Siouxsie and the Banshees/Glove/Creatures/solo may exceed that total, but most of what I own of their's is on vinyl so is not on my iPlod.

^ hear, hear
okay, like Dean I may as well come clean, the first step is admitting there's a problem. In or around 1987 I discovered Led Zeppelin bootlegs in a big way. Living in a hub of music exchange didn't help matters and over the course of about four years amassed a healthy collection. I'm talking the real thing, too: vinyl (occasionally colored) in increasingly handsome gatefold covers. Sound quality was always a gamble but if it was a rare recording it was usually worth it for the history alone if not the always soulful performance of the band. Like the Dead, one never knew what Zep would do on a given night, nor what had been captured on an old sony cassette recorder by a devoted fan from the 15th row. Of course soundboard recordings were preferred, though they too had problems of levels and poor ambiance making a good crowd recording better in many ways. And there were several good sources for bootleg (or "Private Issue") information, like The Illustrated Collectors Guide to Led Zeppelin by Robert Godwin.
Fun times. Then vinyls began to disappear, replaced mostly by disc by about 1995. It became a bit less fun and just as pricey (most boots running about $25, the double LPs easily $40 new). I don't know how many hours of material I amassed of the band live, or if I would count the many oldies they'd do mixed-in with their jams. I'd estimate it, including cassette tapes and CDs, at about 100 hours and there's of course much more.

I don't feel like a fanboy of anything, I have my favorites to be sure but I can go long stretches of time without listening to them. But stuff like Henry Cow and National Health come close I suppose, in that I've obtained everything there is to get by those bands, but in the grand scheme that's not even that big an accomplishment. Yes and Rush are always two mainstays as well (I at least own Rush's entire discography).

They have two outstanding albums. Their debut (Attack of the Grey Lantern) is a classic "bed-sit" album that had fans pouring over the lyrics analysing meaning and concepts like we did in the 70s with any VdGG, Floyd or Genesis album, while not being predominantly "prog" it contains a lot of proggish overtones, great music and superb arrangements - for a quid you really can't go wrong.
The follow-up (Six) is regarded by some as being the lost Prog album of the 90s - released at a time when Prog was off the musical radar, it is brave, bold and ambitious and unlike any "brit-pop" release from their contemporaries.
One other point that may endear them to you is Howard Devoto - he co-wrote and appears on two Mansun (non album) tracks.

I'm too critical to be a fanboy of any band / artist. Yes is my favorite band, but even from them I didn't buy some of their albums, because I think they are not good enough.
I wouldn't see myself being member of a fan club of any band or artist. I'm not a real collector too, I suppose. I'm crazy about buying wonderful prog and non prog albums, though! But I never would buy an album, just because it has been made by one of my favorite bands.

Hi,
No one really ... for the most part it is all trivial rock music and nothing exciting for me.
I only have one sadness in my life ... three actually, maybe 4 ... that I will never get to see Mike Oldfield, Vangelis, Klaus Schulze or Ryuichi Sakamoto in concert ... or in person. They are by far, the best composers of the last 50 years that are not recognized for their work. I would settle for a dinner with Guy Guden so I could slap him some for not sharing his shows ... with folks here, for example -- so people would know what progressive radio really means!
Rock music, as well as electronic and otherwise, would do themselves a big service, the day that they accepted these people into the folds of the great ... but the rock and crap hall of shame is not big enough to even mention these folks ... let alone anything close to "progressive" other than Jethro Tull and Genesis, which to them are not progressive at all -- they are hit makers!
------------- Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told! www.pedrosena.com

Surprised to see I hadn't posted in here before...
Prog-wise, Yes is my biggest thing. I own all the studio albums and most of the live albums (only 4 to go!). I used to collect digital bootlegs by them and by doing so eventually reached a collection of 539 songs, a grand total of 2.7 days, aka approximately 65 hours of their music, plus 5 DVDs, one of which is a 3 hour documentary on the band that I actually sat through in one sitting. I also own some of the solo stuff but honestly I didn't investigate that as closely as the main projects.
I have a fairly sizable Gentle Giant collection, including all 8 of their classic albums and 3 of their live albums (and I want at least one more). I got to The Missing Piece and decided that I needn't go any further though. So I guess I'm not a full on fanboy of them.
I own most Floyd (the only official releases I'm missing I think is More, and Live at Pompei/Is there Anybody Out There). I don't listen to them so much anymore though. Interestingly, I got almost all of my Floyd before I got into prog.
I have a sizeable chunk of Simon Steenslands discography, despite it being difficult to find most discs. Only two to go.
Non-prog, I went through a huge Tears for Fears stage, own everything by them except two of Curts solo albums. I had a few bootlegs of them too. 164 songs, 12.2 hours there. (15.1 with side projects)
I'm not a fanboy but I did acquire the Anthologies and Live at BBC by Beatles when there was a great sale on them, so with the portions of their studio discography I own, that puts me at 373 songs / 15.9 hours.
Lately, I've been fanboying over Les Miserables (the musical - I think I own all the English versions now and two french versions), Munly, and Joanna Newsom.

I can't think of a single artist/group that I've loved everything from, although Zappa and The Beatles certainly come the closest to fitting the bill. Wouldn't call myself a "fanboy" for either though, considering The Beatles and Zappa have some of the most diehard fans in existence.
Who likes everything from one artist/group? That's crazy talk.
Edit: Miles Davis actually comes closer than both Zappa and Beatles in terms of the percentage of releases that I've liked a lot.

Another one of mine is Mansun. I think I'm the only person who said "Only three discs?" after purchasing their rarities set. |
I love Mansun as well. Make sure you post some reviews if you havn't already. |
Are they in the Archives? |
Yes they are. They are the one addition that I am particularily proud of being involved in. |
Shame I didn't know them. I've seen Grey lantern in Cash generator for a £1. Worth getting? |
It hasn't been in Cash Generator since but I recently found it in "Works" for £1 (buy one get one free). I am sorry to admit I am greatly disappointed.

re: being a fanboy, Mansun remains the only band break-up that truely upset me. I didn't cry but I thought about it and was quite distraught.

Did someone say fanboy? Why yes, I'm a fanboy for Earth and Fire. That's their singer Jerney Kaagman as my avatar.
Odd, because otherwise I don't think of myself as a symphonic prog kinda guy. But I love this band beyond all reason. Even their synth pop albums that supposedly suck (but don't).

Gentle Giant and Zappa.
I have all GG's studio albums plus 'Playing the Fool' and apparently 2.8 days (67.2 hours) of Zappa material.

I'm a huge The Fall of Troy fanboy. I was really upset when they broke up, and Thomas Erak's new band is nowhere near as good.

About 500 songs by Pink Floyd. Every studio album and soundtrack (including Zabriskie Point), every live album, every single, and a bunch of bootlegs and unreleased studio sessions. Not to mention I have 5 movies of them. There is only one song i don't like by them, "dogs of war." Good god i hate that song.

Rush. I used to have almost all of their studio albums and some live ones (in CD or digital form) until I had computer and MP3 issues and lost a few of them. Now I have to get them back. I can legitimately say that I love everything the band has ever put out, so that would make me a raving fan(atic)boy.

I'm just updating my Tull vote since the Aqualung 2 cd 40 anniversary pack has come out. There's more than double the songs I really rate highly now compared to the original 11 song release. Tull come across as great in 1971 with 19 different compositions of which at least 12 are very good and at least 6 of these being on disc 2. Tull remasters are a massive success. The bonus tracks on Aqualung, Warchild, Stormwatch, Benefit and Stand up really double the amount of first class tracks on each disc. No longer does TAAB stand above these other releases.
All 6 are great as well as Heavy horses, SFTW, A etc
