This is a pet peeve of mine, the number of times I've seen a band reffered to as Post Metal when they clearly arent is a bit annoying (sorry, but its the pedant in me). Recently I've seen Agalloch, band who's music is based in Black Metal, described as Post and before that Grayceon, who are best described as "god alone knows".Angry

For those that dont know, Experimental is more of a catch all genre for bands that wouldnt fit into tech/extreme or prog metal which explains the lack of a clear deffinition and why bands with seemingly no similarities are lumped togethor (think In the Woods... and Grayceon).

Post Metal tends to be based around using the riffs to develop textures in the music through layering and repitition. The primary bands that have, and continue to, define this genre would be Isis, Neurosis, Pelican, Cult of Luna, Mouth of the Architect, Rosetta, Minsk, The Mourningside, Baroness, The Ocean, Giant Squid and Jesu. Obviously you get groups that step out of this mold whilst still keeping Post Metal feel, most notably The Pax Cecilia. That probably sounds like a pretty useless description to some, but I hope the list of bands gives a clear indication of what Post Metal is.

Edit: Prog Geo has reminded me of an important point that I missed. The reason these two are lumped together, other than the fact that Post Metal is really just a bit too small to exist as a seperate sub genre on its own (there's probably only about 40-50 bands listed here, maybe a few more) is that theres a strong conection between the style of a lot of the bands we have here classed as Experimental and Post Metal plus, Post Metal originally grew out of Neurosis and Isis experimenting with Hardcore and Sludg Metal.

I hope I've cleared up some confusion, though knowing my luck I've just created more.

This is another mistake for me.Ok,I agree that there's connection here. But Post metal contains experimentation. But for me Experimental metal is industrial metal.

I've heard Isis, Pelican, The Morningside, Rosetta and The Ocean from the "post" side and I must say that there are quite some differences between them. But at the same time there is one major similarity in sound between all of them. Maybe with the exception of The Ocean; I've just got the album and after the first I don't remember much "post" in it, but this may change after a few listens.

The Ocean tend to be more towards the Sludge side of things from what I've heard. I have a download of Precambrian but I've yet to give it a listen, they were included in the list mainly because they are cited as a major Post Metal band rather than any familiarity with them I have. Rosetta always struck me as a clone of early Isis, late Neurosis.

No I can't and I quite frankly can't stand either:) They lack and melody and songwriting skills and the musicianship is lacklustre at best IMHO It just sort of bores me, sorry:(

I've just discovered The Ocean recently, what I've heard so far is really good.
Bands like Isis, Pelican and Neurosis are very big with family and friends and so are always on my horizon but I've never paid enough attention.

I think the Ocean could be the band to open the genre up for me.

Yes I can.

And I think it's a good match to pair together. Way better than post rock/math rock anyway. Wink

I can certainly tell the difference.

I will say that Agalloch goes into Post ground with Ashes, but overall they're certainly not a post-metal band.
