I can't think of anything that really qualifies.
Even albums that don't go well with fans of a band still have their support. Even if it's just from the parents and girlfriends of the involved musicians.

Anyway, out of my own vaults I would select Black Sabbath's Seventh Star or Rainbow's Difficult To Cure

Out of my own collection probably the 4 King Crimson Albums I purchased : Starless and Bible Black, Red, Larks Tongues, and Wake of Poseidon, they are all horrible, bad, no-good albums.

Speaking just about rock bands:

If we are talking about bands of which we do like some of their other releases, then St. Anger wins easily.

If not, there are lots of bands which I despise and wouldn't buy any of their albums (Limp Bizkit and Good Charlotte come to my mind right now)

I think we should focus on prog worst album if we go in music in general, it will be to many albums to mentions.

what about rather going into most disappointing albums? I mean, f.e. the wall is not the worst album ever, but it was the most disappointing PF album for me (when listening to them in chronological order)

We can of course close if it turns ugly but after it s everyone responbilities to keep the thread a minimum serious.

I don't see why this thread is worse than "prog best album" or "Whatever band best album"

Wasn't there an album just of the words Elvis spoke between songs at concerts? That sounds pretty bad.

I sort of like the idea of Metal Machine Music, or whatever, on the other hand.

Not sure Metal Machine Music qualifies as it was indeed a finger to the record company to shut them up ... he delivered the two albums and case closed ... no more buggery from those folks. And he did it in fine fashion. Strangely enough, something almost similar is Fripp and Eno's No Pussyfooting, and we like that album ... go figure!

As for Curved Air's album, we gonna have to lock you up with Vivaldi and then expose you to Vivaldi with Canons in the live version and then ... Tympani for the Devil (SDT) and then ... Dance Macabre (Esperanto) and then ... so you can have some fun with it a little more. Listen to it again today ... it's not a bad album, though it has a lot of pop music, but there is nice stuff as well, but it was not exactly an easy one to appreciate because Sonja's voice was not exactly easy to listen to ... but got better.

Worst album ever? ... progressive or not? ... goodness ... I could name 10 Elton John albums that I think are over rated and full of it ... I really thought that some of the Willie Nelson albums were above and beyond the call of reason for bad recording, even if he is a purist and doesn't like all the studio stuff! ... but all in all, the worst albums I have ever heard, have been a lot of rap albums that are just ... ridiculous in my book! At least in progressive we try to be somewhat original ... but I am not sure another rhyme qualifies!

Metal Machine Music is a good album! I quite enjoy it. The worst things I've heard have typically been from power metal bands like Stratovarius and H.I.M. and Nightwish. I loathe the Eagles as well.

Scream Dream, Free For All and others around that time period from Ted Nugent, most anything from Nazereth and Born Again from Sabbath. As far as prog it would have to be 666 from Aphrodites Child. Awful.

Interesting definition of enjoyable. You crazy.

Unfortunately it's also repetitious in a boring way at times. There's only so many ways to scream in mock pain. Of course you have to wade though 15 minutes of bad sludge metal before you get to that part.

But I admit that I'm not the target demographic for that work.

Boney M has got some really bad albums.
I don´t particularly enjoy the Grease soundtrack either, although I know all the lyrics (I have a serious score to settle with my mum on that one).
In Denmark we also have something called Dansktoppen (The Danish Top), which is a bona fide crime against music and should be put to sleep at any given moment.

In prog circles: Magma - Merci and perhaps that Torman Maxt album I heard about a month ago, but there is really no accounting for taste.

You turkey ... we might as well do this by the Top 100 list we have! ... hahahahaha!!!  It would be more authentic, but I have to admit, I had a great laugh on this one!

I would even accept it, if you had said "overblown and over reviewed and overly discussed" added to the sentences. Not sure I want to say "over-listened to" as I can still listen to them ... though I rarely do so anymore ... Hawkwind is more fun for me to listen to and get excited that anything from those three except Passion Play, and Tales From Topographic Oceans, though I really Like The Lamb ... but I do think that it had way too many little cuts and songs, and that it might have suffered from group friction within the band, and some material was done so they had some imput in the album as well, otherwise it is just a Peter Gabriel opus album!

The worse album I have ever heard is Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso's "Banco (1983)" which lasted exacted one spin on my CD player. I can't believe there's a worse album than this one out there. However I see it's successor ".....E VIA" earned a rating of 1.36 on PA so that must take the prize as the worse album ever (never had the courage to listen to it though).

Hardly. Unless you feel the lyrics ARE$ the album. Of course Messrs Hackett/ Banks/ Rutherford/ Collins wrote all the music.

right , the lyrics are a part of the album , not the album , that's why some instrumentals are Masterpieces !

First of all, I like Love Beach. Not a great album, but very enjoyable. I mean that.

Secondly, the cover: I think it's very funny. I don't know any other band that let the world clearly see what size their weenies are. Together with song titles like "Memoirs Of An Officer And A Gentleman" possibly geared more towards the ladies? LOL

GOD!  You folks are really throwing some beauties up here!

In the prog realm, "Union" by ABWH remains one of my all-time stinkers, I just can't get into that one at all.

"Lady or the Tiger" by Fripp & Toyah Wilcox might qualify, but I haven't heard it in ages.

It's amazing how some of these things can grow on you over time!  Not all of them however.

Any number of albums from Van der Graaf Generator. It's not the music at all, which is very adventurous; rather it is Peter Hammill's grating voice. The only way I can describe it is if David Byron of Uriah Heep overdosed on acid, and we were listening to his gibbering shrieks and mumbles in a hospital psych ward.

I disagree completely, but I think that's the funniest thing I've read all week LOL

I am quite alright with amicable disagreement, particularly since I am usually disagreeable. Wink
And I am glad you enjoyed the post!

Let's see, as an ardent Jethro Tull fan since the 70s, I will have to say the Tull album "Under Wraps" is the worst piece of tripe the band has ever released.

Beauty is in the ear of the beholder innit. I dislike Passion Play but don't dislike Underwraps although I only bought it just to complete the set as it were.

And yes I've been an ardent fan since the 70s too.

I'm not exactly sure what the worst prog album I've ever heard is, but if I listened to every progressive rock album ever created it would probably fall under the sub genre of Neo-Prog or Tech Extreme Metal.

One of the worst albums I have heard though would be Ayreon's the human equation.

The worst prog album I have heard? Don't know or if I did know I don't want to offend anyone who might like it.

BUT this should be easy for Prog Archives to work out  with their algorithm thingys.

So come on Administrators we want to have a permanent list of the worst prog albums of all time as voted by the members of PA.

We demand it!

I am a HUGE fan of Ayreon, and though I don't agree that this was one of THE worst albums in prog, I do think it was one of Ayreon's (and for that matter, one of Arjen's) weakest.

I havn't listened to every album ever but to me the worst albums i have heard are probably
The 1st Chapter By Circus Maximus (the only time i could label a prog album as generic!)
and The Girl Who Was Death by Devil Doll. I rarely finish an album and say "I never want to hear that again" but with both of these albums it was very much the case

My bad. Cristi simply dropped in to defend the Gentle Giant album, saying he didn't much care for the Tull album. He never implied it was the worst album ever, and my selective editing caused the confusion. Next time I'll search for the original post so no one gets hurt. Wink

In terms of rock albums from my favorite bands, I'd have to say "The Prodigal Son" by Procol Harum. I love Procol Harum, but this album is one of the worst things I've ever heard. I never want to hear that album ever again. No redeeming qualities whatsoever.

[QUOTE=King Manuel]Out of my own collection probably the 4 King Crimson Albums I purchased : Starless and Bible Black, Red, Larks Tongues, and Wake of Poseidon, they are all horrible, bad, no-good albums.[/QUOTE

There are bad albums about the infamous ELP LB, and St A by M

I refuse to type the titles

But those King Crimson albums you mention are excellent examples of prog at its best.

Musically, Testimony is pretty good.

This has opened a real can of worms; what it illustrates is that people find it impossible to make a distinction between good and bad and what they simply do or don’t like. Criticism should be above and beyond personal taste. Music you hate isn’t necessarily terrible; music you love isn’t a guarantee of wonderful art. But then again, most so-called professional critics act much the same way as punters, so perhaps none of us can really rise above our prejudices.

Absolute Elsewhere - In Search Of Ancient Gods. Absolutely horrible. A concept album based on the books by junk scientist Erich Von Daiken. Spinal Tap's concept album on the life of Jack The Ripper would have sounded better. The only reason people were buying it was because Bruford was on it. I still have a copy rotting away somewhere in my record collection. Next time I go skeet shooting I'll remember to bring this waste of vinyl along. Maybe I'll review it first. If I remember correctly it was released in quad before quad fizzled out in the late 70s.
