Subject: Favorite Pink Floyd Era

Which one of these is your favorite era in Pink Floyds history, I decided to not include More since it didn't fit in any era. I also had a really hard time with finding a good title for the Meddle and Obscured era (don't judge me!). There is one era with 3 albums, but I don't think that Final Cut will make such a big difference on the result of the poll =p

Well, I voted for the experimental years, because PFs 2 best albums are there (My name is even take from Atom Heart Mother). Too bad that Roger took over the band after Meddle, they managed to make the best music when everyone was writing the songs. I have a strong feeling that one era will completely dominate this, well, lets see how all the other eras manages to fare vs. the giant.

I feel it will come down to the "concepty" and the "spacey" eras. My vote is for concepts because Animals is my favorite Floyd Album, and I have gained a new appreciation for the genius of the Wall and I actually enjoy the Final Cut.

Spacey will win, but that's ok  Smile

Based on my ranking of PF albums, I vote for the Spacy Years, but the Experimental Years and the Symphonic Years come really close.

Dark side of the MOON!

Can't get more spacy than that Wink

Also, Meddle and Obscured aren't particulary Symphonic either =p That's not the point of the poll anyway

Impossible to vote.
I don't much like Piper but A Saucerful is mostly ok.
Meddle and Obscured are very good albums, but Dark Side is great and Wish is a masterpiece.
Animals is also a masterpiece, The Wall is ok, but I don't like The Final Cut one bit.
Finally, I very much appreciate both AMLOR and TDB.

Guess it will have to be the spacy years.

Every period has wonderful albums.

My favorite ones are "Piper", "Meddle", "AHM" and "DSOTM".

I'll go with the Spacy then as I also love "WYWH".

The "Spacey" and '"Concepty" years are one in the same; as a matter of fact, each of the five albums were concepts in one way or another.

You really have four eras:
1) Psychedelic (PatGoD through Umaguma)
2) Transitional (Atom Heart through Obscured by Clouds)
3) Concept (DSotM thorugh The Final Cut)
4) Post-Waters (Everything else)

It all depends on what you want to do =)

Since this poll is only for fun it doesn't really matter how I put the albums. Tbh, I would also use that kind of selection when just describing Pink Floyds history, but now I just wanted to make a fun poll.

If I had those 4 eras, one would have 90% of all the votes =p So I arranged them to fit the poll better.

The two spacey albums are imo the only perfect Floyd albums. Indeed, those are concepts too, so you could also have called the 'Concepty years' the "Dictatorship Years".

difficult to vote given your cut of Floyd's works:
- coupling Umma with AHM and Meddle with Clouds >> that's weird, and calling the latter "symphonic" is very weird (Floyd's most symphonic is AHM)
- separating Animals and The Wall from WYWH and Dark Side

your choices of course..Wink.

but I'll have to pass on voting

As I said in my first post, I assume you didn't read it. I had a really hard time with the Meddle Clouds title. So I just took something that could work.

Given the way the albums are sorted, I have some hard time choosing. My very favourite row of albums is Dark Side, Wish you were here, and Animals. And they all seem to have some similar sound to me (for me Animals sound is much more similar to the previous to albums than to the next two albums).

Easy choice to me - Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother.  Followed by Medley. I like frist two albums too, same as Animals as well,  so that's all what I really like in Pink Floyd's catalogue.

I guess thinking of it as an "era" of similar music would make More difficult to place, though it would have to be with Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother. But still, for example, Obscured by Clouds doesn't fit so well with Meddle either. If I thought of it as "cattegories", I guess More would fit very well with Obscured by Clouds (and then just add the Pink Floyd songs from Zabriskie Point, both included on the film and the rejected ones... as a matter of fact, that would have made a very nice lost Pink Floyd album).

I think every album of theirs is a masterpiece in it's own way. All of them except The Final Cut, which is barely listenable fo me.

In my opinion Meddle and Clouds are pretty much Dark Side of the Moon lite. As Pink Floyd have said themself, the Dark Side sound was not found from nowhere, because if you listen to the two previous albums, you can find strong similarities. I was actually gonna call the Meddle and Clouds era for pre-DSotM years, but I realized that every 2nd post would comment on that since all albums before Dark Side is pre-DSotM.

Also, I always felt that More had a folky approach, and wouldn't fit that well with Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother. More was not particulary experimental, just a nice soundtrack for a movie. Pink Floyd's intention with that album was propably not to break barriers, but to make music that fits nicely into a movie. Hence, I had a hard time to find an era for it.

It might not be relevant to this poll, but "Live at Pompeii" was the quintessential Floyd for me. The live version of "Echoes" is one of the most moving pieces of music I've ever heard.

Concepty years, I guess. Animals is my favorite Floyd album overall, and I've a soft spot for The Wall, as it was the first one I heard. The less said about the Final Cut the better, imo..

Personally I would have put Meddle in the same category as DSOTM. Why is Meddle symphonic?

Voted for their earlier stuff (Piper/Saucerful) as after that I just lost interest. Floyd have produced an incredibly varied body of work over the years but most of it just doesn't seem to float my boat like the Syd era did.

BTW I happen to think DSOTM a rather ordinary music album but boasts some of the finest lyrics ever penned by anyone in popular music full stop. Who amongst us is NOT moved by the following?:

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines

1. Spacy Years
2. Concepty Years (Because of Animals not because of the Final Crap)
3. Psychedelic years

And then it's quite a draw between Post-Water and Symphonic years.
