It seems that Mormons think that by performing some sort of ceremony, they can claim anyone as on of their own.
This site, somewhat tongue in cheek, hosted by a Mormon, lists some of the dead celebrities they think are now Mormons. Zappa and Carl Sagan are some of the most outrageous.
At least they are open to allowing opposing comments on the site.

That has to be a joke.
Jack Ruby?
Ted Bundy?
Lee Harvey Oswald?
David koresh?
Joseph Stalin?
That is perhaps the most absurd thing I have even seen.

1) Mormons believe that a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baptism_for_the_dead" rel="nofollow - baptism for the dead offers the possibility of salvation through baptism by proxy for those who died unbaptized and want it. It does not make them a posthumous member of the church, and Frank doesn't seem like the type to me who would be willing to accept it. 2) I am 85% sure that website is trolling.

Ole Frank would be greatly amused, I'm sure, to find out he'd been inducted into the Mormon church posthumously -- and here's why.
In The Real Frank Zappa Book, he told about how he started a "Church of American Secular Humanism" (note the initials!) after an Alabama judge ruled that secular humanism was a de facto religion. From the book:
"... Judge Hand's ruling ... was struck down a short while later. After hearing this splendid news, I un-filed the papers and 'dissolved the religion.' I probably should have kept it going, since I came up with a few other nice 'doctrines' -- for example, THE DOCTRINE OF INVOLUNTARY INDUCTION, which provided that, as Founder of the Faith and Writer of the Rules, there was no reason why I couldn't lay my hands on a map and decree that all human beings residing in whatever territory I might be fingering at the time were Involuntarily Inducted into the Church of American Secular Humanism -- whether they liked it or not. As you can see, ladies and gentlemen, this transcends mere Mumbo-Jumbo, sending us reeling into the realm of Mumbo-Pocus."

Either way, it's quite presumptuous. Many of those on the list I'm certain would not want this favor.

To some extent, yes. But from the guy's blog: http://www.myregisblog.com/" rel="nofollow - http://www.myregisblog.com/ he does appear to actually be a Mormon. One with a sense of humor.

I wonder if they ever make value judgements do they just randomly save immortal souls or are their some that they prefer to let burn? I would love to see the group of people who get to make that call!!!!

all joking aside, Mormons really do believe in "converting" people after they're dead. Couldn't care less because religion is silly anyway but sprinkling some water on a grave and now they are mormons??? Pissed off my christian roommate to all hell, and I guess it is pretty disrespectful.
That site is all lolz though. Carl Sagan a mormon? George Carlin??

The discussion here is perfectly valid, but any ridiculing or derogatory comments are not. The opening post for example is disrespectful, we will certainly have members of this site who are Mormons. They are entitled to the same respect as all other members. Please think before posting in this thread, and keep the discussion constructive.

Certainly, but some very offensive things have been hurled at Christians and Atheists on this site. I say let em face the same crap we throw at every religious belief!

Zappa would despise any organized religion, and think this is hilarious. Just as I believe it becomes clear that Mr. Zappa respects people's wishes to practice and believe what they want. Also just like I believe, what he despised was the mindless flocking to the beliefs of those around you.

Let this serve as a reminder that one day too, you might be baptized into the Mormon fatith. Uncle Frank would probably be disappointed that they waited until he could no longer give them a reason to kick him back out.
