oh the joy of endless permutations.......i seriously love single albums in which the FIRST track takes up a whole side and the rest of the tracks are shorter pieces. It's like a major statement of intent which really sets the tone n' vibe of the album. Any other recomms based on the following examples/personal favs below?

Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die
Yes - Relayer
Kraftwerk - Autobahn
Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays - As Wichita Falls, So Falls Wichita Falls

Did you forget Close to the Edge?

Also:
Rush - 2112
Rush - Hemispheres
Univers Zero - Heresie

Maybe:
IQ - Tales from the Lush Attic
I'm guessing the 20 minute "The Last Human Gateway" might have been followed by the 2:35 "Through The Corridors" on the original side 1, but I don't know for sure.

A couple more recent ones with long first tracks, though not necessarily "side long" since I don't know how they appear on vinyl...

Sky Architect - Excavations of the Mind ("Deep Chasm" [19:08])
Tangled Thoughts of Leaving - Deaden the Fields ("Landmarks" [17:40])

Interesting that most side-longs seem to be reserved for side-two.

I might be wrong-haven't had the disk in years only the cd-but I think Nektar's  A Tab in the Ocean does.

That qualifies, and a great album, to boot!Thumbs Up

I would say Atom Heart Mother and Meddle too... though the last one has the side long track as the last track, not the first, but in the end I feel it has a similar statement of intent as the albums with the side long track as the first one. Wish you were here may come close to this description... well, at least the intent was to have a side long song as the first song (shine on), but it ended being just a bit too long to fit on one side, and so they split it up and put half of it in the begining and half on the end. Another close one may even be Animals, for Dogs is almost the whole first half (with a very short song as sort of an intro).

Lizard and Pawn Hearts.
Last tracks are one side, but like Dellinger said it is pretty much the same thing.

However, its a double album!

Does "Thick as a Brick" count?

Also, don't forget "Waka/Jawaka" "Just Another Band From LA", and "Studio Tan" by Frank Zappa.

I don't know if "Apostrophe (')" counts, but I've always thought of the "Yellow Snow Suite" to be a sidelong epic.

Mike Oldfield has made a couple of good albums that fit this formula

Platinum
Crises

And also Tangerine Dream - Force Majeure

Unless someone else has mentioned it:

PULSAR - The Strands OF The Future

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=1126

Even though I've got it here right now on my I-pod, I can't recall if that first side long track is all instrumental? I'm going to give it a listen again right now!

I do remember it doesn't have the greatest recording quality/production, but it still has a very dark spacey sound. It's a Mellotron loaded beast too :)

also

TRIUMVARIT - Illusions On A Double Dimple

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=1684

Two side long pieces, bit of a favourite of mine, even if it is dismissed a little as an ELP clone.

Hey AtomicCrimsonRush!

Ah, a fellow Australia! No chance you're in Melbourne?!

Oh, I LOVE Rush's `2112'!! I play it at work quite a lot, one of my co-workers said `Man, that chick has a really annoying voice!' lol!

As for Magma, cound be `Kohntarkosz' (or however you spell it), though I know some CD's list the two-part title track first, while if I remember my vinyl has it split over the start of side one, and the end of side two? So not sure if that counts?! :)

Focus, if I remember, had both `Moving Waves' and `Hamburger Concerto' that had side long pieces, but pretty sure they were on the second side?

Focus 3
has the 19 minute Anonymous II (Part One) starting the third side. If you look at it as 2 separate discs I guess it can be included.

Oh, and welcome to the site from a fellow Melbournian! Thumbs Up

Yes, but I really wish they all weren't if they had condenced all of the tracks into 10 minutes (aprox) each, then it would be a good album, because, like rick wakeman said, all of the sections were bled to death.
