Spock's Beard are true prog songwriters. I haven't been a fan for long.. since X, but that was an amazing album from beginning to end. Mars Volta just doesn't sound right to me. Whiny vocals, whiny guitars.. they seem like a bunch of guys who enjoy writing music but aren't true professionals and had some success. Concertina is the only Mars Volta song that I consider listenable (that I've heard). I can understand that some people enjoy a different sound, but Spock's Beard are professionals who write great prog music with their own style. Also I can't vote in this poll for some reason.. post count required? |

I like Spock's Beard, they just don't hold a candle to the Volta. Though I can see you don't think TMV are 'genuinely progressive', which, whether you enjoy their music or not, is rather foolish.

Spock's Beard are probably my least favorite band in this tournament. No disrespect to them of course, but I just can't get into that SB, TFK, TA sound. Volta are magnificent though. |

Haha I'll take your word for it, Snow Dog, as you've probably heard more than I have anyway. There were some moments off V that were okay to me. I think TFK have too big of a discography to draw me in. |

I don't think Neal's that great a musician actually. I like his songwriting tho, so whatevs. Volta is cool and all, but kinda bores me a bit and they don't have a single album I can listen to without skipping tracks.

If that remark is directed at me, where did I say that, pray? I said Spocks Beard were damned good. I didn't mention TMV's musical ability at all. I just cannot stand their style and, most specifically, their vocalist's voice.

I cant put my vote yet, but dam, this is a hard choice... I love Mars volta for their raw sounds and wierd tracks, wich overall is a great progrish experience. Spocks beard is pure progressive, not derailing that for a second. Equal in my eyes, and ears.

Both great bands, but I'm voting for The Beard. TMV are certainly interesting, and do have glorious moments, but are a bit inconsistent. No problem, then. I actually think TMV have a LOT of musical ability, but that doesn't necessarily translate into great music. Dream Theater are the most frustrating example of that; stellar musicians and I know I should love them, but their music never really does it for me on a consistent basis. ------------- A TVR is not a car. I thought that about Bedlam. Octahedron was actually a pleasant surprise but still miles away from the first 3. As for SB, I've heard BoD which was just appaling, and some selections from Snow which left me wanting to not hear anymore. Good musicianship is the only compliment I have for them.
