On which of this two songs do you like the singing better, Epitaph by King Crimson, or The Musical Box by Genesis.

I think Box is more diverse and intense emotionally. it's a mini epic with a variety of moods, from peaceful (the beginning) to downright disturbing (the "Let me get to know your flesh..." part). One of my favorite performances of Gabriel's. Epitaph is beautiful as well.

The end of musical Box is one of Pete's best performances, but I have feeling that it will lose to Epitaph. Ermm
Still, I vote Musical Box.

Epitaph, hands down.  Greg Lake's vocals are immaculate.

Well said.

Overall, i also enjoy Gabriel much, much more than Lake.

Musical Box on this occasion. Gabriel's emotional performance is wonderful. Nothing against Lake though.

Epitaph by far!! Lake's vocals on this song are simply beautiful.

This is funny. Here I am voting against Gabriel when, in the PG vs. GL vocals poll, I voted for him. I'll say it's because of Musical Box's arrangement, as opposed to all the material from Gabriel I love. I never cared for early Genesis at all.

Gabriel shines brilliantly in "The Musical Box."

Well, pretty much every song he has sung.

This is a choice between two of the best vocal performances in prog rock.  Epitaph by a whisker.

The Musical Box for me. It was this song and especially PG vocals that made me interested of Genesis. GL vocals in Epitaph, well brilliant too.

As much as I like KC, I don't like Lake's vocals at all. Plus the Musical Box is a freaking great song on a not so great album, but great song nontheless!

Epitaph, because Lake's vocals are really beautiful on that song.

Box is not my favourite Genesis song but the vocals are pure class, and I don't care about Epitaph and dislike the vocals...

Gabriel's theatrical performance matched against Lake's clear voice: a good contest. I prefer the vocals on The Musical Box, just a bit.

Nursery Cryme isn't in the same league as ITCOTCK IMO though "Musical Box" along with "The Fountain Of Salmicus" are excellent but the rest of the album...

Peter gives a far better emotional performance for me. Gets me every time the end. Goosebumps. Also Musical Box is better song.

Well, I think Epitaph could have been sung by another great vocalist, whereas The Musical Box really leans on Gabriel's distinctive approach. Still I must admit I like both songs and performances equally with the full appriciation.

Epitaph is one of my favourite vocal performances in prog, and one of the most emotive ones. On the other side Gabriel is still among my least liked vocalists on prog. And even though Musical Box is one of the songs sung by Gabriel that I enjoy the most... still Epitaph wins for me by far.

I actually voted for King Crimson - rare because I really don't like much of what the band did.

However, Epitaph is a wonderful piece of music and Lake's vocals are excellent, as they usually are. Gabriel's vocals on The Musical Box are also pretty amazing.

Point of embarrassment: in our pub quiz league, we always get 10 people to identify as the last round. Who couldn't identify Peter Gabriel, then?? Yep, me!

"The Musical Box" is the epitome of musical drama. One of the most moving performances ever done by a singer in rock music. The vocals on "Epitaph" are excellent too, but that's a more conventional kind of excellence.

Epitaph easily for me.  Good as Musical Box is, I don't think the vocals are all that great.  It's the instrumental tension that makes the song.  Epitaph, on the other hand, is owned by Greg Lake's vocal.  Stunning performance.

Epitaph vocals are not so great IMO, a bit lack of emotion despite the excellent range of Greg.

On the other hand, The Musical Box vocals are MAGIC.they transport you to another world where anything is possible, the dramatic changes are brutal, and that's perfect for me..

The emotional charge in the final section vocals is amazing, nobody ever has reached that level of communication between singer and audience.

I still believe Greg has a better range, but peter is a better vocalist and Musical Box is his peak

I love them both, but Nursery Cryme was, to me, the epitome of what early Genesis and, indeed, prog from that period was all about.

When I first heard Musical box, I was like "What the hell is going on?" on that final charge (and I must say, not in the good sense)... however I've grown used to it and it doesn't bother me one bit anymore. Still, I wouldn't say it's among my favourite vocal perfomances by any stretch of imagination.

Between these two songs, Epitaph, but from the same album as The Musical Box, I'd have an easier time comparing Seven Stones to that particular KC song and in that case it may even have a slightly better vocal performance, though all excellent.

Vote for The Musical Box. Gabriel for me is a superior singer, his voice is beautiful and his style is unique, whilst Lake's voice is beautiful but not unique.

Epitaph.
I've never thought about The Musical Box as a vocal achievement, far from Pete's best performances imo.

This was a tough one. I love Geg Lake, but I have to go with Pete. More soul.
We always talk about Musical Box. How about a comparison with Seven Stones or Looking for Someone?

Wow... I'll have to come back on this one. Two masterpieces in every sense of the word, never even thought of comparing them before to be honest. I guess I'm leaning towards Musical Box though since I am a bigger fan of Peter Gabriel than Greg Lake... however Epitaph might just be Greg's very strongest performance ever.

me too, very slight edge to Musical Box as a song but a slightly bigger edge to Epitaph for vocals.  As has been said more or less by others, with Musical Box I am more enthralled by the instruemntal parts and arrangements, even as I acknowledge Gabriel's voice as an important contributor.  With Epitaph, Lake's vocals are as integral as the music.
