Subject: A proposal for a poll tournament

Hey guys.

Over on DreamTheaterForums, there is a very popular tournament known as a Survivor. What happens is we take one band, and go through all of their albums one by one. Each round, each person will vote for their least favourite track. The song with the most votes at the end of the time limit (typically 1-2 days) is eliminated, and the next round is posted.

The last song remaining off each album progresses to the finals. While the 2nd and 3rd place (sometimes just 2nd) songs go to the consellation, where the top 2 will make it to the finals. The finals work the same way as an album, with voting the least favourite song and such. The finals decide the final ranking. The last song remaining is the winner.

A survivor for just one band may take several months, and B-Sides/Non-album tracks usually are all compiled into one series. If their are too many, often multiple songs will be eliminated in a round to compensate for this.

So I was thinking of introducing this thing to PA. I plan on beginning with Porcupine Tree. However, if you guys aren't interested, I'll let the idea rest. So whaddya say, guys? Smile

(P.S. Mods move from the poll section if you wish, but I feel I'll get the best results here)

To be honest: Ugh.

I think to reduce the time to get through all of a band's outcome, if we include B-Sides and such, you should create around 3 polls at a time. Every round could be 36-48 hours?

Like I said, in the B-Sides survivor often multiple songs will be eliminated at once. So basically the same.

I think there should be multiple polls on studio albums as well. I worded that strangely, i know.

Sounds like an extended version of the Weakest Link games over at the Steve Hoffman Music Forums. Why not? You'll soon find out if people here don't care for it, but it seems like many will.

P.S. I apparently haven't got enough posts to even vote in a poll... Unhappy

You need about 40 posts.

Ehh. I find it more fun 1-by-1. Most do. LOL But for albums with many tracks, such as On the Sunday of Life, I will probably go multiple tracks at once.

I'm down for this. Maybe do 2 albums at a time, just to speed it up a little, and not have too many polls going on at once, and possibly confuse people.

I think the first poll for him would have to be a multi-parter eliminating albums until we're left with the top 25 or so. LOL

Eh, I'm in.

(sorry, I was going to initially write more but had a sudden guest in my office)

I enjoyed last year's post 1980 tournament for the most part, I give credit to those that have the energy to run such a tournament, a lot of undue grief tends to be heaped on those brave souls.

I say viva la Riverside!

You are quite right sir! I've just noticed it says I can cast my vote.

I thought I'd read somewhere you had to get 100 posts before voting. That will teach me not to read things properly - I've been posting on every poll going just to build my total up!

So there is one poll just to eliminate ONE song? And then a new poll with the same album minus one song? So an album with 13 tracks will have 12 polls?

Maybe I misunderstood it.... if not, it's not very good. Camel's The Snow Goose would need 24 polls then.. it's better to eliminate more songs at a time and have a longer poll time limit so more people can participate.

Maybe if you could eliminate half the songs in the first round. Then in the next round, half the songs again. And from there, one song at a time. But I don't know if you can make multiple choices in polls. For The Snow Goose the first round would require 13 choices. Then, out of 12 you pick 6. After that, one song at a time. If the album has only 8 songs you could elimiate 50% in the first round and then one song at a time. But album of only 4 songs, you could do one at a time from the beginning.

Just some ideas, hehe..

See, the point is we want to have some sort of ranking for each album. Eliminating half an album at once would cause loads of tiebreakers, and would probably end up being incredibly long.

And as I said, longer albums usually have 2 or 3 songs eliminated at once. It's then decreased to one when we're nearing the end.

Go for it.  I wasn't a member yet when the post 1980 polls were going on, but I was visiting at the time and really enjoyed following the tournament.  They're more fun than just random polls, imo.

Oooh, fluffy...LOL

The 40 post rule makes perfect sense; - I'm old enough to not be surprised by human behaviour...
Thank you for the welcome! I've actually made great use of the Archives for years to help me discover lots of great prog, so a big thank you to everyone involved! Thumbs Up
I never really thought much about the forum side of it, though, until recently, but I'm glad I eventually did. Seems like a nice hang-out here (and I'll be voting soon enough).

I was thinking about what other bands this would be good for. You don't want to have a Survivor for a band that's too obscure, not many votes would come in.

I was thinking about doing a Yes one, or King Crimson. We'll see.

@ DisgruntledPorcupine - when you do these Survivors, the top 2 songs from each album go to the finals? I'm not doing consolation rounds or anything (still thinking about doing a B-sides round).
