Forgive me if I'm wrong, but there doesn't seem to be a Doctor Who thread.

Every forum in existence needs a Doctor Who thread.

Hmmm. I am a fan. I did not like the new season at all but I like the series overall.

The 80s era were how I became interested it the series. I liked the newer series with Billy Piper, as companion and then onto Donna Noble. Perhaps her season was the best of the new series with David Tennant.

You cant beat Tom Baker tho for sheer class with brilliant companions Sarah, Leela, and Romana 1. I wont mention K9 and Adric....

I'm basically an any-era fan. But being young some of the earlier episodes have disappeared so I haven't seen them all.

Last series was…. average. Moffat is one of the best writers to write for DW, but he just hasn't had any really fantastic stories since he took over. Unlike the 4 fantastic ones he wrote for the Eccelston/Tennant era.

Matt Smith though. Is fantastic. He just hasn't had many good stories to work with.

I myself have never seen it, but I'll admit...I have a natural bias against it solely because a couple of people I know were sooooo obsessed with Dr. Who, that a friend and I felt out of place and even excluded, because we were not fans. LOL
It was honest to god 75% of all their conversation! I'm not a TV show, movie, music, anything could occupy so much of my brainShocked

No. Watch it. It is the solely most brilliant thing in existence.

I have currently converted 21 people towards loving it, and I need more.

Have to say, I couldn't stand the earlier (1970s/1990s) series; only got interested once Eccleston took over. David Tennant for me is the best of the current batch, but Matt Smith isn't doing too bad.

Just don't get me started on the execrable 'Torchwood' spinoff.

Some of the earlier stories are great, but they just take too long to get anywhere.

And Torchwood. The series that was sh*t for two years, then pulled out the best 5 episodes of TV for a long time. Then went back to being sh*t again.

I love Doctor Who -- have for as long as I can remember. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure. It's the only show still going that I try not to miss.  My favourite Doctor was played by Jon Pertwee, but then he was also my first.  Tom  Baker was also very good. My favourite companion was Sarah Jane Smith who crossed over from latter Pertwee serials to Tom Baker ones.  I quite disliked Donna Noble's character

I do hope that the new season (series) has some more interesting and fantastical stories since I also don't think the writing has been that strong of late.  It's never been a very consistent show for me, but I still never like to miss it -- at least not since the 80s when I lost interest in it.

I like Matt Smith's character, but would like to see a new Doctor ere very long -- perhaps a Doctor Smeghead, Craig Charles from Red Dwarf. :)

My favourite is still Tennant, with Davison, Tom Baker and Matt Smith coming in behind.

I've only seen a few of Pertwee's because I believe some have disappeared. But he's still very good. I guess just every version is good.

The fact you say "every forum needs a Doctor Who thread" and how you have converted 21 people...well it is honestly just feeding my own fire...I know think even more that this show is actually a cultLOL

Besides the fact crazy Dr Who fans wrecked my group of friends almost, aren't there like 40 seasons of this thing?
I'll be dead by then!
Which is what you want I think! Stern Smile

Naaaa. Only 32 seasons.

But most fans only watch the most recent series, and there's only 6 of them.

Seriously, watch something from the new series "The Empty Child/Doctor Dances" from series 1, or "Blink" from series 3.

I'm about midway through Tennant's 1st or 2nd season (can't remember which, it's been a while since I watched)... One of these days I'll get around to catching up to the present.

I liked Tennant's Doctor a lot.  I think my favourite episodes of the new crop involved Eccleston with the Slitheen in the two-parter Aliens of London.

By the way, for those who haven't seen the parody with Rowan Atkinson, Jonathan Pryce, Hugh Grant etc. Dcotor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do-wDPoC6GM" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do-wDPoC6GM   (not embedded for full screen reasons)

EDIT: And my favourite version of the Doctor Who theme off a really good album:

I watch, but I'm too young to have the original seasons.

Of the most recent batch I do love Tennant's doctor most, with Smith a close second. With regards to writing...I thought season 5 and the first part of 6 were very good. But the latter half of six did seem to suffer a little with writing. But they did dig themselves quite a big hole, which I don't think anyone expected for them to get out of fully. At least they left various questions for future seasons to answer.

All that said,  I am looking forward to the new season.

In terms of writing, the latest two series don't compare at all to 1-4 with Eccelston and Tennant.

I can't think of one episode from Matt Smith's era that tops Silence In The Library or Blink or The Sound Of Drums or even the End Of Time.

Writing has declined. But I still have hope. Moffat's a terrific writer most of the time, he just hasn't been on writing form recently

It's a different take. Moffat wrote probably the finnest individual episodes during Russell T. Davies period at the helm. Now he is more concerned with the story arc (which is brilliant) than with individual episodes.

Still there have been some pretty great ones with Matt Smith - "Vincent" and "The Girl Who Waited" stand out from the top of my head.

During RTD's era, Moffat's four were the best, along with Human Nature and The Sound Of Drums.

Since then, Vincent, Girl Who Waited were quite good, I'm more partial to Vincent, maybe because I've seen it more, and the other good ones have been The God Complex and The Doctor's Wife.

Notice how none of them have been Moffat's?

Also, I thought the second weeping angels episode was one of the worst possible things Moffat has ever thought up. I try not to think about it, because the more I do, the more things are wrong.

I agree with you on christmas specials being average. Christmas Invasion was only good because it was Tennant's first story and he played him very well. Runaway Bride was good because of Catherine Tate. End Of Time was good because it wasn't really focused on christmas that much.

And the rest were all quite bad.

And I will eventually post a list of my favourites. Eventually.

RTD's writing varied wildly, IMO. One episode would be brilliant and the next would be complete schlock. IMO, he actually improved in both quality and consistency in Series 4, which is my favourite of the new/revived series.

The main thing I don't like about Love & Monsters is the ending. It was pretty ridiculous and horrifying if you think about it.

My god, I can't believe I missed this thread.  Let's see, read something about top five companions, so here goes.

    Sarah Jane Smith (Lis Sladen)
    Dorothy "Ace" McShane (Sophie Aldred)
    Rose Tyler (Billie Piper)
    Romana Mk. 2 (Lala Ward)
    Amy Pond (Karen Gillan)

Runners-up, Romana Mk. 1 (Mary Tamm) and Ian Chesterton (William Russell).

I've finally gotten into the show, about a month ago.  Starting off with the recent seasons (since I want to watch the new one before TOO long) and I have to say...I'm a relative addict right now.  Finished season 2 (of the new ones) a few days ago, such a sad last episode.  I confess a love interest in Rose. Embarrassed

Seeing as this thread has sort of restarted. Opinions of episode 1 of series 7?

I liked it, but only a bit. Episodes have been getting a bit weak the last couple of years. And this episode is obviously just setting up next years big return for the 50th anniversary.

I thought the actress who played Oswin would have made a wonderful "companion".  And it turns out, that's exactly who she'll be.  A different character than in this episode, though.  Rather odd!

^^ There is lots of fan speculation floating around surrounding the Oswin character(s). Some think Jenny (the Doctor's daughter, series 4) is going to be involved, much of that theory based on the chair in these two photos:
Personally, I'm just going to wait and see.

Umm, she is (will be) the new companion, as of episode 6 this season.  It's unclear if the character is Oswin or not.

The new companion will be called Clara Oswin, Jenna-Louise Coleman's character in the last episode was Oswin Oswald, so evidently the two will be related in some way as has happened before in DW ... Freema Agyeman returned as companion Martha Jones after previously playing Adeola Jones and there have been several re-occuring characters who are linked in some way, such as The Face Of Boe and Jack Harkness. Of course since they are playing around with time how that relationship works can happen in any direction, just as it did with Melody Pond / River Song, who met the Doc long before the Doc met Amy Pond.

Tomorrow's episode is called Dinosaurs On A Spaceship ... I like that title.

Scott, I own all the currently released vintage DVD's, a massive collection..and although I've bought all the modern ones too, I'm so far behind in watching them. I don't think I've seen more than the first five or so Matt Smith episodes, which means I've got about three seasons to catch up on! :D

I would watch this new Special in the morning, but I'm on nightshift, so it means I won't get home until 8am!

I have a long (9 meter) "Dark Side of the Moon" scarf, but I won't be wearing it. LOL

I expect a number of people will be dressing up, even in Basingstoke ... I thought about it for two seconds then discarded the idea - I'd look ridiculous: a cross between William Hartnell's Doctor, Anthony Ainley's Master and the Goodyear blimp. Ouch

I remember several years back a friend and I were going along to a midnight premiere screening of one of the newer Star Wars films. I came up with the mind-blowing idea of having some lightsabers attached to our belts haha!

As we're nearing the cinema entrance, my friend was like `Oh man, we look like idiots' etc, and then we walk into the cinema foyer, and I swear it was like the cantina scene in the original SW, EVERYONE in costumes! So my reply was `Great, now we're underdressed' !

Oh yeah, poor Colin Baker! It's a shock when I saw him now on some of the extras on his Who DVD's!

I really need to make the time to watch more Doctor Who.  My familiarity comes from a handful of VHS tapes I rented and/or bought, mainly from the Tom Baker period, but with some Pertwee too.  And I haven't really seen anything since. The curious behavior of the Daleks has also made its way into our family's bucket of humor.  Maybe because of this, my wife got me a Doctor Who t-shirt about a year ago ("Time and Relative Dimension in Space", printed in the shape of the Tardis), and of all the t-shirts I own, that is the one that has gotten me the most compliments and comments from complete strangers.  Problem is, a lot of them then assume I'm a Dr Who fanatic too, and I feel kind of dumb when they then want to talk about the show.  Kind of like when a Penn State alumnus sees me wearing a Penn State shirt and wants to know when I graduated (I didn't - my wife did).  So it would be nice if I was a bit more current on the Doctor Who show.  It's on Netflix, I just need to make the time for it.

My mother, my sister, and the majority of my friends all love Doctor Who but I guess I'll just never get it. I've been forced to watch episodes from the Baker, Tennant, and Smith eras. My takeaways: there are some entertaining enough episodes from the Tennant and Smith years but the old stuff is boring beyond belief. Also, Karen Gillan and Jenna-Louise Coleman are super hot.

I watched it this morning to see what all the fuss was about.

Do bare in mind I am not a recent Doctor Who observer and last saw it in the Tennant era.

Trying not to spoil the plot for those who've not seen it yet:

Although the story was quite gripping I feel disappointed.  I actually felt more gravitas toward The War Doctor than I did toward anyone else because he played the more serious role.  I just don't like the silly comedic filler.  I know that's been a staple for a while but it's out of place for me.  It's like watching Carry On Time Lord at times.  I was waiting for a CGI Sid James or Kenneth Williams to appear. LOL

It just confirms for me why I stopped watching it a few years back.

It wasn't terrible though.  It didn't warrant all the "wow" posts I saw on Facebook though.

Another complaint: couldn't they have found a better actress to play a certain red-haired lady?

It's confusing.  It seems the early Doctor Who's aimed at a younger audience were darker and seemingly less comedic and the more recent series are aimed at a more adult audience (or a family one) and are more comedic. Ermm

I've found the audio plays and the audio novelizations much more to my enjoyment.

I watched The Day of the Doctor twice on TV yesterday (EDIT: or actually that was the day before), plus lots of other great Doctor Who stuff.  John Hurt was the star of it to my mind, and I am a big fan of his as well as Doctor Who, so great choice for me.  My main problem with it was that I think they should have done a two hour special (for me Doctor Who has generally worked best with a longer format). Was nice to see Tom Baker at the end (I did expect to see him as he is the most iconic of Doctors, but not exactly sure how that worked with him being the curator -- being much older-looking than when he regenerated, so is he the Doctor? I assume so). I actually like Matt Smith a lot.  I didn't like the Star Wars-like parts that much, and I think it would have been much cooler if we'd seen lots of Gallifreyans regenerating during the attack, and that energy release destroying some Daleks.  I knew that Gallifrey would not be destroyed since we knew  that it continued to exist from earlier series.  I liked much of the comedy, but I would have rather had more pathos and rather less bathos.  Still, despite having the excellent John Hurt, it was not my very favourite  of the Smith years ( that would be Day of the Moon/ The Impossible Astronaut).

The Tom Baker scene shows why they couldn't have had any of the older Doctor-actors making guest appearances with the exception of Ecclescake (who I believe refused to play the Doctor again) and McGann (who appeared in the mini-episode that showed his regeneration into Hurt as the War Doctor). The Doctor Who writers are very good at darning plot holes and side-stepping paradoxes so I liked the ambiguity of the curator scene, and I liked how it was subtly played by both Smith and Baker

On a side note, I'm not sure that all Gallifreyans could regenerate, not all Gallifreyans are Time Lords for example, Rassilon created the TARDIS tech and altered Time Lord cell structure, this does not imply he did it for all Gallifreyans.

Agreed.  I also liked the ambiguity of the Tom Baker scene.  I don't assume that all Gallifreyans can regenerate either, but seeing a bunch of them (Time Lord, and Time Lady to use that term, Gallifreyans) regenerating would have made for entertaining spectacle.  Perhaps the "Lady Time Lords" could have done a Romana in their regenerations  for comedic effect. ;)

Although that radio play never mentioned that she lived with a guy from 1981 until her death.  It made her sound like she was a lonely lady with an alcohol issue.

She really did sound like that (except the slurring perhaps), as this Radio Scotland Radio Interview shows:

...It seems like 90% of the dialogue in the radio play comes from this one interview.

The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot was entertaining and mostly amusing. I liked the Sean Pertwee and Olivia  "... I'm usually in everything" Coleman scene, one day the producers will put Sean in an episode.

An Adventure in Space and Time was good, though the characterisations weren't that accurate, nice to see 'Delia Derbyshire' make an appearance.

WARNING - POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW! :

Despite a touching final scene, Smith's final episode was quite a mess. Far too many little details and unresolved storylines crammed into too short a running time.

And as for the banished Time Lords in the other dimension sending the Doctor essentially a `bonus' regeneration' through the crack....what a total cop-out!

It's a children's television programme, not Shakespeare.  The shows producers painted themselves into a corner with the 12 regenerations plot device in the mid-70s as part of a story line featuring the Master, as no one at the time expected the series to last this long, it was never seen as a problem. However any solution was always going to be a cop-out no matter what it was.

It was pretty clear to me: "Ha! It's started - I can't stop it now, this is just the reset, a whole new regeneration cycle" ... in previous uses of the phrase regeneration cycle that has referred to the 12-regenerations.

My feelings on the Time of The Dr finale is that it did well to wrap up many unanswered questions and really wrapped up Smith's era well to pave the way for the grand entrance of Peter Capaldi. He looks rather resplendent in his new costume too..

Not sure how he will go in his first season but so glad Coleman remains as she is perhaps the most enigmatic companion since Zoe.

I grew to like the Smith era of Who after a shaky start to his seasons. He was magnificent in the last 3 eps of his final season, and I love how he appeared in Adventures in Space and Time

I have been watching lots of Who lately, saw Planet of Giants today, and yesterday watched day of Dr, Time of Dr and Hide in one sitting.

My kids are now into and its my fault. hahaa

Aye, Capaldiwho gets the thumbs-up for me too Thumbs Up

Not a bad début episode if a little too long for the story-line (ie it dragged at times). Bet Tenant is pissed that Capaldiwho gets to keep his Scottish accent while Tenantwho had to fake an English one.Wink

Not sure what to make of Mary Poppins Missy:

But I adore Michelle Gomez (Green Wing) so I'm not going to think too hard about who or what she's supposed to be.

They could have made that about 15 minutes shorter and not really have lost anything.  But Capaldi gets a Thumbs Up from me as well.

Did anyone else though get that feeling that at the end that whole thing with Clara accepting the Doctor being all old and gray and stuff, was aimed at the teenage girl fans who had a crush on first Tennant and then Smith?  It was almost like they were talking directly to them "please give the old guy a chance, no he won't be like your pretend boyfriend, but it will still be a good show".  It was cool to see Matt in a cameo, but c'mon, that seemed a little too much.  It would have been better if they had done so that it was more along the lines of "The Doctor's been older before, he'll be older again.  If you don't like it p*** off."

Yeah, the whole episode had that "let's see who's a Doc Who fan and who's a Tennant/Smith fan" vibe going one. I was okay with it, but then again, my favourite Doctor is Hartnell, so the message wasn't really aimed at the likes of me. LOL

I actually liked the pacing of the episode, and not really sure what to cut to trim it down 10ish mins. Needless to say I enjoyed it, and while I can't give a full rec for PC after only one episode he seems like he'll fit in nice once he has a chance to develop into his own doctor. I'm glad hes a bit different from Tennent/Smith at any rate.

I would have cut out most of the ending for one. That was unnecessary I thought. I also thought the beginning dragged on a bit. I was getting a bit impatient to see the new Doctor in action. Of course, I felt that same way with the first Tennant episode too.

    Oooh, Who thread!

I'm reserving judgement on Capaldi, the 'intro' episode is always a 'hey, let's all get used to the new Doctor' festival.  I get your point (The Doctor) about the episode being written for a specific group, I certainly got the impression that they were selling the new Doctor but hadn't considered who they were selling him to.  Yeah, I think you're spot on with the target audience.

I'm very curious to see where the whole Missy thing goes.  I've heard a lot of options but I'm going with some version of River (I could be romanticisizing the teaser).  She refers to the Doctor as her boyfriend, River was downloaded into the library and the cyborg could have also been downloaded into something (circumventing the murder versus suicide question at the end).  Finally, last year, Matt Smith was asking producers to keep River as 'his' character and to not go any further with her.  This could have been Matt Smith randomly talking about River, but I think it was more a reaction to the producers discussing the option of reinventing the River character.

Just my two cents. . . looking forward to the next one.

I could see that RE: the ending...at least parts of it. However, if they were trying to sell the new doc to the younger fan base as you suggest (and I agree with) than most of it was necessary.

I also like the silliness of the beginning. And it seems like the doctor always enters one of those periods of instability when he transforms (at least with the new esries...don't know the older ones) so to continue that trend makes sense to me. (But it was rather non-connected to the story at large.)

Unnecessary from a story standpoint, but yeah, I guess from a marketing standpoint maybe it was necessary.  I just personally didn't feel the need to be sold on the new Doctor.  I've been watching the show since McCoy regenerated into McGann (actually before that in reruns, but that was my first contemporaneous regen).  I'm used to accepting new Doctors.

Period of instability - when Davison regenerated into Colin Baker, the 6th Doctor attempted to kill his companion and then decided to live a hermit's life.  So yeah, that period of instability goes back a long way.

Roland, that was my thought too as far as Missy.  I think she could very well be some version of River.  The "boyfriend" line was what made me think of that too.

Today's Halloween costume.  My wife is the Dalek and my daughter is the Doctor.  I'm the Tardis.
