Any Coldplay fans around here?  They're one of my favorite modern bands; I especially love their more recent stuff (like Viva La Vida and X&Y), though I haven't really formed an opinion about Mylo Xyloto yet.  I find it amazing how they're able to make pop/alternative music into a legitimate art form; Viva La Vida could even be considered a crossover prog album, imo.

A Coldplay anti-fan here if truth be told. I find them horrendous, awful lyrics and plodding, dull, tryhard music. Chris Martin's lyrics, honestly.

I
Looked at the sky
And I wondered why
Then I started to cry

You
Your eyes were so blue
Well what could I do?
It was then that I knew

We
Under a tree
On a beach by the sea
But do you love me?

Us
Why all the fuss?
On a train or a bus
Gaping sockets ooze pus

Have you ever listened to Elbow? A similar aesthetic but Guy Garvey is a vastly superior lyricist and they don't put on airs anywhere near as much. Bell X1 are also similar-but-better. Another band I would mention to people who think Coldplay is good is The National, who are not really the same thing but can also get into your gut emotionally with their own blend of art-rock and pop with above-average lyrics, though they earn it naturally rather than going for Coldplay's theatrics.

What song is that? That's horrendous.

I mainly like them for the atmosphere, pretty big fan of Eno's production on Viva La Vida and I think it suited them well. Out of all the mainstream bands out there, Coldplay is one I can agree with.

Those sound like early lyrics to me, they've gotten better over the years, though he still has a few duds, I admit.  Check out these poignant words from "Violet Hill"

"Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And a fox became God

Priests clutched onto bibles
Hollowed out to fit their rifles
And a cross held aloft
Bury me in armour
When I'm dead and hit the ground
A love back home, it unfolds
And if you love me, won't you let me know?"

I think they're able to overcome even the weaker lyrics with Chris Martin's emotive delivery that lends so much depth and feeling to the songs.  I love the intricacy and atmospheric quality of the music, too.

AH: I think that lyric you quoted is terrible but to each their own. I would be interested to see what you think of Elbow and The National, the two bands I cited as having superior lyrics. If logic holds, you'll hate them and it'll be my turn to get a drubbing ;)

There are plenty of Elbow songs with terrific lyrics, but a particularly strong one is The Bones Of You, give that a listen/read sometime.

^I'll look them up, let's see, about now.  I'm listening to them right now.  There's a guitar, and some guy with a weird voice, which is cool.  Hmm, distortion, hmm, backing vocals, hmm, just guitar chords now.
I LOVE THIS GUY'S VOICE
But give me some time with it.

Yep, those lyrics are good.  I don't know that the music matches up to Coldplay, though, imo.  I'll have to listen to some more of their stuff.  They're not on the archives, I'm assuming?

I don't mind their first album, I think less of their later stuff to be honest. They're definitely not as bad as people put them to be, IMHO.

Elbow have a strong Talk Talk/Peter Gabriel influence but they're not prog. They have made proggy songs, particularly Newborn.

Even though a lot of people hates them here, I'm a big Coldplay fan. My favorite kind of music may be prog, but I really enjoy listening to modern bands too.

I think 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' is their best, but 'Viva La Vida' is kind of prog-ish more than their other albums. Maybe because of Brian Eno? I don't know...

Coldplay is pretty decent, though I've never really given them a thorough listen.

I remember that once when I was in high school, my freshman English teacher said I looked like a huge Coldplay fan, but I had long ratty hair and was wearing a Cannibal Corpse shirt. Obviously, the Coldplay fanbase looks like a bunch of badasses.

Actually, yes! I'm not quite a huge fan, but I can get into them. I'm a bit surprised there are fans of them here.
Is it just me, or do they seem to be among the most hated bands? Maybe I made that up, but it seems like they get a lot of unnecessary complaints. What's so bad about them?

And The National is very nice too, I think. Oh, his voice!

Some tracks I really like, and some just grate on my nerves. Clocks is my favourite.

I'm not quite sure how you would categorise Coldplay. I guess they're of the same genre as Elbow and Keane. I prefer both of those bands.

I've got about four of their album of which "Rush Of Blood" is my favorite, I've also seen them live which was very good, must say that the crowd was a lot younger & more attractive than most gigs I go to.

There goes all my Avant credibility.

Coldplay have been showbiz-engineered into an entity that creatively repackages and retails a commercial product ("music") to a large contingent of consumers, who have been social-engineered into buying repackaged commercial product ("music") of the type that Coldplay-like entities retail.

Hey, folks, as long as everyone is happy, I am good with it.

I don't believe in unwritten rules.  If it's official, then it's a rule.  If it's not, then its a social more.  Social mores leave a bad taste in my mouth because I associate them with Victorianism, which I despise.  So I do my best to break as many of them as possible.

Yeah, I'm far more 'keen' on Keane..

Tom Chaplin can actually sing, and that band really know how to write a melody, craft a song and deliver incredible choruses. Songs like Atlantic and Bed Shaped knock spots of anything by Coldplay in my opinion.

I would have to know what scale you are determining to judge the sufficiency of the funniness of a joke.  As far as I know, there's no upper limit for how much humor the human brain can handle, so even if your joke was completely sufficient in its funniness I could still pile more humor on and it would only make everything better.

Or, we could simply postulate that the original joke was infinitely funny, so that any additions would have zero effect on the total funniness level and thus would be entirely superfluous.

"Written rules" (laws) are more often than not just formalized social conventions of the given society at a given time.

Moreover, should there be a clear lack of sync between a written "rule" and the prevalent "mores" (or the common sense) of the time, such rule will be viewed as a government overreach (and/or stupidity), or an anachronism (and/or oddity), and appropriately ignored by the society in general.

For supporting documentation, Google "stupid laws" or "dumb laws" or "weird laws" or "unrevoked laws".

I think most laws are examples of government overreach.  And I don't like most of them, either.

I agree with much of your reasoning, however, in the context of this site, we are existing in our online personas in an undemocratic system with rules determined by a small group of people.  These rules may or may not reflect the social customs of the time, and are almost certain to contradict some social customs because of the radically pluralistic nature of the site.
