Two absolutely different bands, beggining their careers in the end of eighties. Which is your favourite?

Neither are among my favorites, but DT is more consistent for me.

Either of these are among my faves, but I most definitely prefer Neither.

Porcupine Tree, without a doubt.

This kind of question makes my head implode because I like them just about equally, so I abstain from voting.

Was a big fan of DT before but have grown tired of them, so PT it is.

Personally, Porcupine Tree - I think they've produced the most varied & consistently high quality material over the years, whereas to my mind, DT have stagnated in recent years from being a pinnacle of progressive metal, to just another clever heavy metal band.

Just my little ol' opinion, ya understand

I prefer the whole discography of DT, but Porcupine Tree have the best albums. But I say Dream theater

If you look at the two of them right now it's a no brainer, Tree all the way. But one cannot forget what DT has done in the past.
I couldn't pick one to save my life.

I know only two albums of each band but Dream Theater rests too much on the onanism, I prefer Porcupine Tree without a doubt Smile

Dream Theater, though given what they've been putting out for the last 10 years I was very tempted to say neither.

Dream Theater 1,000,000,000,000,000 times.

Neither !
DT is very strong technically, but their music lacks of soul and emotion.
Maybe what happens when musicians are too good ...
The same for PT, in more pretentious (see Wilson vs Stolt thread) and a bit less talentuous...

Though I really love Dream Theater and know most of their discography, I have to go with Porcupine Tree even though I only know a few albums (The Sky Moves Sideways, Deadwing, In Absentia, Fear Of A Blank Planet, The Incident).
They are a bigger inspiration to me than DT when it comes to songwriting or recording. DT is pratically always the same deal. PT is more diverse in style than DT. Though I prefer Petrucci's playing, he can shred, but can play with a great feeling too.

But I really love DT too. They changed over time, but they sound pretty much the same since TOT, though ADTOE sounded more like their older stuff.

PT.

The Tree. They are my favourite band.

But I do love DT as well.

Dream Theater. I'm just getting to know Porcupine Tree, but I think I've heard enough to vote. I still like a lot what I've been hearing from PT, and at the moment it sounds so much more fresh than DT, but still, I love Dream Theater too much to vote against them.

I prefer Dream Theater by a ridiculously large margin.  Not that PT is bad or anything, they just don't do as much for me as DT does.

Dream Theater when I want that over the top prog metal, excessive soloing...stuff
Porcupine Tree when I want some of SW's neo-ambient-mellow krapt stuff...with a touch of metal on the side.

Have you listened to A Dramatic Turn Of Events? It's easily the best thing the're done in 10 years.

Porcupine Tree by an extremely large margin. Their discography remains more consistent for my tastes and I find Steve's songwriting to be rather better in comparison. As a musician though, I highly respect DT for their technicality, but at the end of the day, composition and songwriting come first in my book.

PT for me. DT has not used their talent to the fullest extent IMO. They could've made more diverse choices in their music, but it always seems to be the same. PT falls into that camp lately as well and I'm hoping the next release doesn't sound the same as the last couple.

Reasons why Portnoy left, after suggesting a break......he was spot on. Most of ADTOE is boring, and everything except Adrenalin Mob, he has done is excellent.

Portnoy was fired after he insisted the band take a break. ADTOE is much better in his absence.
