Two legendary bassists, both known for innovating the role if the bass in jazz and metal (respectively), and both lives cut short in the mid 80s. Jaco Pastorius is a legend of bass playing. He's fantasitc. I also love Cliff Burton. He's a fantastic metal bass player. Maybe Metallica would be good if he was alive.  But... I gotta go with Jaco. Almost every jazz bassist who plays fusion owes their sound to what Jaco accomplished. Victor Wooten, Alain Caron, Steve Jenkins, Gary Willis, all of them. Even prog bassists like Jonas Reingold or the Haken bassist wouldn't be the same without Jaco's influence. Cliff was great, and definitely did new things with metal bass, but he wasn't even around for nearly half the time that Jaco was.

Pastorius - not a bass player: that man was a bass guitarist, true virtuoso & one of the most influential musicians of the genre. Burton - as a metal bass player, he was good, no doubt; listening to 'Ride The Lightning' & 'Master Of Puppets' recently though, I was more taken by how much he was himself influenced by Lemmy (sorry, but that's what I hear  )
So, one influential virtuoso vs a good bass player? I'll let you guess which way I voted  -------------

It should have been Lars. That being said, Jaco is still the superior musician here, and frankly I'm still a bit offended that Metallica's current bassist is also the current owner of Jaco's Bass of Doom. That belongs in a museum or with his family, not on stage playing Master of Puppets. -------------

Not a good poll when one compares a jazz bassist with a metal one. As much as I like Burton, Jaco got my vote. Fun fact - Jaco is Robert Trujillo's favorite bass player (or so I read)
