Hello all!
Over the last two years or so, there have been some truly outstanding instrumental prog albums! Top 5 for me have been:
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=37019" rel="nofollow - Kotobel – Concerto for Piano and Electric Ensemble
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=35061" rel="nofollow - Asturias - Fractals (2011)
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=33231" rel="nofollow - Sanhedrin - Ever After (2011)
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/carpenota" rel="nofollow - Carpe Nota - Carpe Nota
http://www.dprp.net/reviews/201153.php#latheorie/" rel="nofollow - La Theorie Des Cordes - Premieres Vibrations (2011)
with very honourable mentions going to:
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=34753" rel="nofollow - Moraine - Metamorphic Rock (2011)
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=36844" rel="nofollow - Forgas Band Phenomena - Acte V (2012)
http://www.moonjune.com/catalog/041_MACHINE-MASS-TRIO_As-Real-As-Thinking_MJR041/" rel="nofollow - Machine Mass Trio - As Real As Thinking (2012)
http://www.moonjune.com/catalog/045_TOHPATI-BERTIGA_Riot_MJR045/" rel="nofollow - Tohpati Bertiga - Riot (2012)
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=37845" rel="nofollow - Eclat - L'Esprit du Cercle (2012)
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=36348" rel="nofollow - Montresor - Daybreak (2011)
and of course http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=38027" rel="nofollow - Anglagard - Viljans Oga (2012)
(I've very likely missed a few off the top of my head...)
But my question FINALLY is....
What other instrumental progressive albums would Archives members recommend that I might have missed that you think highly of? Any genre - jazz, metal, electronic, kraut....and they can be either modern or vintage reissues - I'm just after some more suggestions!
Please feel free to offer some opinions on the above mentioned titles too!
Thanks!

Wow, Lima, when it rains, it pours with suggestions, cheers!
I've had DFA - 4th for quite a while, and it's very impressive, like a slightly more aggressive Canterbury album!
And I bought `Karfagen - Lost Symphony' recently, and I've got it sitting in the car right now, but haven't listened to it much yet, or not enough to let it sink in - sounds very promising though....and look at that cover!
As for your other suggestions, I'll look them all up, thanks!

I saw your review, and I've noticed that album has been getting a lot of reviews lately, so I was very curious! At first I was a bit put off by the `Post Rock' tag - not a genre I've warmed to so far - but it seems from your and others comments that it blends a lot of prog elements and other genres, so it might balance it out better for me!
I shall look further into it, thanks!
Thanks for your suggestions too, Timothy, is that the recent Elephant9 album with Reine Fiske? I've heard that, and it's very good! Getting better with every release, adding new layers and colours!

| I'm not sure I agree with the Post/Math-Rock tag myself. There is a good amount of Math in there (tricky guitar and bass counterpoint in strange meters), but it's not post-rock in the least.

This is a good thread as I have been looking for instrumentals and the list you guys have posted so far are none that I am familiar with.except Anaglagard.
Looks like I am going to make another list of stuff to get with these to go with my new list of RPI stuff to get....$$$
You are most likely familiar with these instrumentals that I have that are not new:
Hectic Watermelon - Great American Road Trip
Roine Stolt - Hydrophonia
Jazz is Dead - Great River Sky (I did not see them listed on PA, rock/jazzed up instrumentals of Grateful Dead music)

Hmmm, that looks interesting! The band look so moody and sinister on the cover!
Is the music very dark jazz/fusion?!

Not dark in my opinion, as good or better than tribal tech. Every track a winner. I think i will spin it now.

I need to revisit the new Elephant9. So much good music out there. The new Tribal Tech album also which I need to hear more of.

Certainly interested in that `Stone King' album - what a cover! Thanks for the suggestions!
Oh, and I should have mentioned that Trioscapes album in my opening post - what a KNOCKOUT!!
I was desperate to snap up a vinyl copy, found one place that had it left in stock, ordered/paid for it, then it sat in `pending' for almost ten days! Got it in the end, luckily though!

Hey there Michael you're going to get a lot of suggestions maybe it would help if you would mention a couple of instrumental albums you really like.
Anyway here's my list: Dreadnaught - Musica En Flagrante. Eclectic, funky, avant progressive rock. I guess i'm their biggest promoter here, the band is very creative and totally smokes! read my review for more details, it's really worth it. Estradasphere - Palace Of Mirrors. Avant prog that blends a thousand different styles. Kopecky - Sunset Gun. instrumental Prog metal, very special. Isildurs Bane - Mind Volume 1. If you like some chamber in your prog. Recreation - Music Or Not Music. 70's, classical inspired prog. Shylock - Ile de fièvre. 70's, french crimson inspired prog. IL berlione - IL berlione. Semi avant prog, semi fusion crazy japanese band.
Hoped I helped. Have fun!

Hi there Michael!
Recommendations eh? Careful what you wish for dude
First of all, since you're into Berlin school electronics, you just have to download this freebie right away!!! Man, I love this thing - especially with the charismatic Manu Chao vocal emanations (yep sorry - a little vocal infusion here, but it ain't much) http://koroiev.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - http://koroiev.bandcamp.com/
Aktuala: Italian folk-freak-psych-acoustic indescribable act http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju2Nd88uTXA" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju2Nd88uTXA
Älgarnas Trädgård: Brilliant Swedish Krautrock band with their own endemic spin on things http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2pfB8qkdSA" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2pfB8qkdSA
Ash Ra Tempel - Le Berceau de Cristal. In reality, this is a Manuel Göttsching album, but no matter - it happens to be one of my faves. Originally recorded for a movie bearing the same name - this one is as fluent and beautiful like a blue stream of mountain water. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCYi0uDEWac" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCYi0uDEWac
Between - And the Waters opened. Krautrock masterpiece that sounds unlike anything else. It's pensive, slow, orgasmic, Easternly tinged, jazzy, psychedelic and everything in between(pun intended) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo6Xq7BBCZc" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo6Xq7BBCZc
Codona - 3rd album simply named 3. Ethereal fusion with Indian touches. Breathtakingly beautiful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxs95HlInYg" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxs95HlInYg
Eberhard Weber - Yellow Fields. Symphonic fusion with one of my absolute favourite bassists of all time. Smooth, relaxing and spiritual in a way that feels like gentle waves lapping up against you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjAtLR1SJYQ" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjAtLR1SJYQ
Etna: Fantastic Italian fusion act who made one album in the 70s. Melodic and highly infatuating http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9jWLURIP0Q" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9jWLURIP0Q
Free System Projekt: Dutch TD lovers conjure up an ode as well as something of their own in their album Moyland. This one is truly hypnotising. I have the whole album for you right here! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK1-VRU-Cr0" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK1-VRU-Cr0
Hugh Hopper - Hopper Tunity Box. A true Canterbury classic! Maybe this clip isn't representative of the album as a whole, but boy does this album smoke! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4rOFwwzKK4" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4rOFwwzKK4
Invisible Opera Company of Tibet - UFO Planante. Originally an idea of Daevid Allen's - revolving around a certain set of esoteric musical notions, which should be free for all around the globe to incorporate into their sound. On here it's practically Brazilian band Violeta de Outono who took it upon themselves to visualise the music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZwwBJ8s-X8" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZwwBJ8s-X8
Magical Power Mako - Super Record. Personally, I find this one to be very close to the warm and catchy psychedelics of Floyd's More - only this one is Japanese. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kipYjowJz8" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kipYjowJz8
Alrighty, I'm taking a break now - but don't you worry, I can keep this up for days

Aaaarrgh damn, I forgot about one of my absolute favourites.
French band Syrinx. Zeuhl (easy going though), fusion and a drive that'll bury you deep within your sofa. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FHrkkRTR7I" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FHrkkRTR7I

Hi, I hope I won't bother anyone if I make my own advertisement , but I think my albums completely fits into what you seem to be searching for, as this music is close to prog, electronic, jazz and ambient, please check out :

The grouping of Math and Post Rock is silly, what's worse is how many bands fit into both of these genres. When we were classifying the genre we decided that a majority of the music is math rock with kraut and post-rock influences. Charts and Maps is a similar case, Perhaps just takes the mixing of the genres to another step.

Recent:
Neo Gothic Progressive Toccatas - The Three Monks (Pipe organ in a 3 peice band format, read the reviews!)
Triple Ripple - Anders Helmerson ( keyboards and drums mainly ,jazz rock )
Composed - Chris Fry (acoustic guitar peices, very pretty and ideal for relaxing to)
Ones you might have missed
Comeuppance - Sphere 3 (2002 release ,excellent heavy instrumental prog and you can still get this album if you fancy it on CD or as a download. I recommend it!)
Music for Piano and Drums -Moraz and Bruford (pretty much self explanatory and its very good)
Live In Marseille - Gerard (possibly the loudest prog album I've heard , ELP influenced so be warned!)

OK, I've managed to hear some bits and pieces - Youtube and Bandcamp are your very good friends! - and here's what I've got to offer:
Lima96 - Man, what a list you've provided! Your Hypnotoad avatar is convincing me to look up each and every title you've mentioned! I did play that Karfagen album twice at work last night, there's so much beautiful playing and stunning arrangements on that one. Perhaps a little too long, but I think I'll get over than on several more listens!
AEProgman - I do own that Stolt solo album 'Hydrophonia', and it's always been very impressive! Man, I have not dug that off the shelf in years...good a reason as any to do so now!
Timothy Leary - This Tri-Offensive album sounds very good, such tight playing and great arrangements! I'll look into this one further!
AApatsos - `Awaken the Stone King' was pretty impressive - totally exhausting, going in all directions, but very interesting! Endless ideas! Is there no physical CD release?! Needs it with that awesome cover!
Sagichim - I'm going to look into Dreadnaught, I'm impressed by your passion for them! THanks for your other suggestions too! I have both of the 70's Shylock albums, but I haven't listened to that second one very much, simply because the first album is one of my all-time favourites, so I've kind of overlooked the follow-up! I'll go dig it out!
Guldbamsen - Dave, thanks for the tip! I went to the Bandcamp page and downloaded that Koroiev album, and it sounds amazing!! What a find!
As for that Ash Ra `Cristal' album, I heard it online years ago, and it's a total knockout. I've been dying for a CD reissue, I remember a while back I was bugging John (Mellotron Storm) asking if he knew where to score a copy after he mentioned it!
Speaking of electronic/instrumental albums, I just received in the mail an Ebay item I won for $5 - Harvey Bainbridge `Dreams, Omens and Strage Encounters' - this sounds really good! Have you heard it?!
Jazzcomputer - Thanks, I've tried downloading some of your free albums over and over today, and not one completes properly! I'll keep trying, as I'm very curious, and I think it's exactly what I'd love to listen to right now.
RichardH - I have heard the `Three Monks' album, and it's incredible!! Oh, that booming organ! I've noticed there's still vinyl copies available, so I'm going to snap it up on that format! As for the Chris Fry album, I was just going to blindly order that, based on reviews I've read of it. Sounds like something I'd really go for right now.
Progbethyname - You know, I've got every single N.I.N's album EXCEPT that instrumental one you mentioned - I don't know HOW that has happened! I'm especially curious because some of the instrumental pieces on albums like `The Fragile' were outstanding, kind of like King Crimson? I'll keep this one in mind!
Prog4evr - Hmm, that's two votes for that Bruford/Moraz album, I'll look it up now!
HolyMoly - Thanks to your free download suggestion, and all the others who reviewed that `Perhaps - Volume One' album, listening to it right now, and it is impossibly maddening, fascinating and exhausting, real dirty sound unlike anything else I've ever heard! Going to stick with this one! Is no physical CD available of it?!
Thanks to all for your suggestions so far, please keep them coming!

I'm particularly sorry about this situation I wasn't aware of, mainly because I rarely download my albums myself :). Thanks a lot for teIling me about this. I've contacted the OVH provider in order for them to correct this problem ASAP. Again, all my apologies for this annoyance, I hope they will correct ths problem during the day... I'll post an update about that when things will have returned to normal.

Hi Yves, sorry that I had to even bring this to your attention! It's very kind of you to offer potential listeners the oppurtunity to sample your albums, and I was really looking forward to trying them. I just tried to download `Elsewhere' again three times in a row, and it seems to get anywhere between 30 MB and 68 MB before. The actual speed is very fast, just not making it all the way! Hope it works out eventually!

Oh, `Fractals' got a 5 star review from me! It was a little pricier to buy, but well worth it. Great production too, and all the players sound amazing on it!

Ha, already ahead of you there, Snow Dog, thanks for the recommendation! I've got an order I'm putting together with Greg Walker's Syn-Phonic, and when it appeared on one of his updates, I looked a few samples up and then asked him to put a copy away for when I finalize everything! Looking forward to it!

Hey Michael - even if I seem to remember the name Bainbridge, and I am not even sure it is in regards to this guy, it genuinely sounds like something I'd like. So thanks for the re-recommendation hahah!
Electronically wise, I strongly urge you to seek out Heldon's Stand By. It should be attainable, and unlike his previous efforts, this one feels very welcoming and friendly on the ears. It, of course, helps a wee bit if you're into electronic and Kraut, but that doesn't seem to be a problem with you. A very nice feature about you btw - I actually prefer it to breasts.

Harvey Bainbridge was the keyboard player in HAwkwind from 1978 to 1991 (I think), last played on their killer `Palace Springs' live album from that year! I don't think he's listed on the Archives, but I found a review here:
http://www.dprp.net/reviews/201039.php#bainbridge - (URL thingy not working!)
The reviewer didn't like the album much, but even said "I don't like electronic music like Tangerine Dream, etc etc..." at which point I thought, "Well, review's over, pal, nothing worth reading here!" lol!
Thanks for your kind words, but for the record, there is NOTHING wrong with breasts, and your `pro-Kraut/anti-breast' agenda has been quite clear for some time!

I double checked, and according to Wikipedia (which, as we all know, is the definitive source for all information!) :
"Bainbridge continued to play bass with Hawkwind until late 1984. He then became the band's primary keyboard player, as Brock recruited the 20-year old Alan Davey into the band to play bass. Bainbridge continued in this role until 1991."
I remember him specifically on one or two of the live Hawkwind DVD's like their `Classic Rock Legends' one with the blue cover, he had wild frizzy hair and performed some of the spoken-word passages from behind his keyboards.

| Michael, I think the guitar player has offered physical CDs to any reviewers who wish to have a physical copy to review. I'm not sure if they're available otherwise. See this post in his "Review our Band" thread:

And Austin, thanks for your clarification on the sometimes confusing Post Rock/Math Rock genre tag.

What a thoughtful, nice and organized response to get back to everyone. ;). Anyway, yeah let me know how you like GHOSTS by. NIN. Love to know what you think. Also. SAVIOUR MACHINE. Not vocal free, but I great listen indeed. Enjoy man. 👍

Hey ProgB.T.N!
Yes, it was kind of thorough - exhausting too!
Just yesterday in a second hand store I came across a N.I.N live DVD, I forget what it's called, but it sort of had a bright red cover and it said it was from the `With Teeth' tour - it was $4, and I should have just grabbed the damn thing, because it's now out of my way to go back there! Should I make the effort?!
Oh, and I totally forgot to follow up on that forum thread about your Saviour Machine recommendations - sorry! I'll look into them! Promise this time!

WITH TEETH is a good album, but certainly not their best. WITH TEETH can be categorized as an industrial electronic dance album. Trent Reznor went a bit more experimental with this album and make no mistake it is not a prog album, but it does offer up a great dancey soundscapes. Also, I would do away with that live DVD and get the studio copy of With Teeth. Most importantly I'll give ya list of 3 albums that you should start with, so you can really get an idea of what NIN represent sound wise and what NIN are capable of.
Start with..... 1) GHOSTS----this is Trent Reznor's most progressive and creative instrumental piece he has ever done. GHOSTS even achieved some commercial success because a few spots from the Ghost album was used in the soundtrack for the movie, THE SOCIAL NETWORK and REZNOR earned himself an OSCAR for best music score Ina motion picture!!!!
2) THE FRAIGILE: HALO 14---NIN are in full force here. Electronic industrial gothic metal performed at its very best. It's a double disc and you'll enjoy every song. Incredible stuff.
3) WITH TEETH or YEAR ZERO: you could do either of these albums because they both represent a different side to NIN where by electronic Dance is Heavey in their overall sound.
Enjoy bud. And SAVIOUR MACHINE is a real treat. A bit of an undiscovered gem. P.A has received them quite positively. :)

I've got all the N.I.N albums up to `Year Zero', but not the two since that one, including the instrumental album you mentioned. ALso got `Broken' , `Fixed' and the `Perfect Drug EP' which strangely doesn't seem to be listed on this site?
Although I don't listen to them all that much these days, I still think very highly of those albums and wouldn't even think of getting rid of them!
And I love the rather naive clubby dance sound of the debut `Pretty Hate Machine'! Even though it's a little dated now, just the other day a friend and I were talking about it saying `Man, how much did that album blow our minds when we were younger?' lol!
I'll definately try and snap up a copy of the `Ghosts' instrumental album though!

Pretty hate machine was one the best albums of 1989 for me. It is so innovative and I think still is relevant today. An absolute classic. Anyway. Yes. Get GHOSTS and enjoy the sh*t out of it. It's excellent and it's reznor's most advanced, mature work to date. ;)

Hello, thanks again for telling me about this problem. After some kind of real struggle with the bandwith provider, things seems to be returning to normal. You *should* now download normally my albums, please tell me about any issue in order for me to get another provider. Again, I'm really sorry.
But if you finally happen to listen normally to this music, just tell me or write a review :).
Thanks for the interest in Jazzcomputer.org's music.
Best,
Yves http://jazzcomputer.org/

Hello Brother, Sorry for the late reply, but on behalf of all the band I wanted to thank you so much for the addition and generous words! We would love to head to that part of the world...However, right now a time machine would be more useful than a plane - as 1974, I believe, was the last year a major label would have advanced us enough to head down on someone else's dime..! We're still trying, though!
