Hello, Progarchives
I am a newbie, not just to this forum, but to prog as a whole.  I am looking to expand my musical tastes and discover new bands that will feed my growing hunger for new music.
I am a fan of metal music and my experience in that genre has been mostly in the Christian music scene, (Demon Hunter, As I Lay Dying, Showbread).  While I still love the religious side of metal, I want to find music that is outside of the Christian sphere.
The Prog bands that I enjoy include, Dream Theater, Theocracy, and Becoming the Archtype.  I would appreciate some quick suggestions for new music.  Once again, Hello!  I am happy to be here.  I hope I can be a part of community for many years to come.

Welcome to PA, great place to discover and discuss music!
The reviews and the PA Top Prog Albums section will help you (in the Top Albums section you can filter by sub-genres).

Hello Truedefiance, welcome to P.A. Big smile

Considering you like DT, I suggest you listen to Transatlantic, they are a super group composed by great musicians and Portnoy is the drummer. Although you mentioned you want something outside the Christian music circle, I do suggest you listen to Spocks Beard (they are fantastic!Approve) and The Flying Colours (Portnoy again on drums here), Neil Morse, who is a born again Cristian, is on the forefront both these bands and also in TransAtlantic.
 Hug nice to meet you.

Welcome, and I hope you will feel here cozy and warm ... or uncomfortable and cold, whatever you prefer.

I'm not a metalhead myself, but there are three things (sub-genres) that came to my mind when I read you enjoy metal ... but I think you'll figure out what those are.

Happy hunting.

That's an incredibly comprehensive list, which includes some phenomenal lesser-known bands.

Thank you very much Andy! Smile Its always great to hear good compliments from people who have same interest in music. So many years having to listen stupid comments like "why do you listen this strange / c%€&#y music" from people who dont understand what is good music. Here people do understand music and appreciate it.Smile

I have heard so far only a few tracks, feel bad to mention this actually considering I love their previous album, met them in Sweden when I went to see Gungfly perform live in Sweden, btw I am not short, they are nordic vikings Big smilehowever
the new one still has the signature style of the first one, not sure about the deep vocals especially the track called SLAVERY to be honest it reminds me a bit of Furyon and this is not good coz the vocalist from Furyon has killer vocals, he can sing like a high guitar riff. Instrumentals are incredible tho' on this new Beardfish album, which I did expect.

As suggested earlier, make sure you check out Transatlantic and Neal Morse. Haken is a band that is close to the style of Dream Theater, both of their albums are incredible.

Stratovarius is similar in style to Theocracy.

Thanks everybody! I'll check out some of those bands you gave me.  I'm also gonna look into Opeth, they sound good.
I've heard a little Neal Morse, and I'm not too sure about it.
