I have gotten very into Mike Oldfield recently and have his albums Tubular Bells, Ommadawn, and Amarok, and plan on getting Hergest Ridge, but I want more. So what else would the good people of Progarchives recommend for me?

You already have the best ones! So all i can recommend you is all of those who are not as good! Seriously, i enjoy some tracks on Five Miles Out and others, but never as much as his best stuff. Maybe it's time to a live CD or DVD.

Incantations is probably my favourite Mike Oldfield album although Ommadawn runs it close.

If a DVD then I would go for Exposed which was recorded at Wembley Arena and focuses mainly on Incantations and Tubular Bells.

I believe that all Oldfield's albums up to and including Discovery are great. After that it gets a bit patchy. Amarok divides opinion. A lot more aggressive and at times a whole barrel load of fun but its a bit 'mad' as well.

If you want a totally different side of Mike Oldfield then Songs Of Distant Earth is worth checking out. Its nothing like Tubular Bells , Ommadawn etc. More synth based but one of the best albums I've heard through the headphones.

There are albums to avoid like Heavens Open which even the man himself admits is a bit of turkey! Of the more recent releases Guitars isn't bad. He has a rock album on the way apparently so that might be interesting.

^Great post.
I'll second the Incantations rec - if only for the wonderful drumming of Pierre Moerlen. He additionally plays a quite lovely vibraphone on the albumCool

Oh yeah Mike isn't bad either... Tongue

Albeit more orchestral in nature, I think Music of the Spheres is sublime.

Just to repeat what everyone has already said - after Hergest Ridge -  Incantations, Ommadawn, Songs Of Distant Earth. If you don't mind a bit of Ibiza techno then Tubular Bells III is worth a listen. But Incantations would be my first suggestions.

I think I might have an easier time recommending to you what to stay away from and honestly, there are a few...

Yep, I'd get Incantations which to me is his Topographic, his White Album, the one where he really lets his hair down and worries not about running time or taking detours.

Tubular Bells 3 is my favorite by far of the TB series so I'd recommend that.  I also like QE2 and Platinum.  Guitars is interesting in a gimmicky way but I can't listen to it often.

I second pretty much anything thas been said. The Songs of Distant Earth and Incantations are both great albums, the former is one of the albums I enjoy the most to listen to. Crises also has an interesting title track and of course the famous hit singles, so it is worth checking out.

Yup. Incantations and Tubular Bells 3. TB3 is very different, which best shows the incredible diversity Oldfield has.

Incantations and Platinum. Both pretty good albums, and good follow-ups to his first three. I also enjoy The Voyager from time to time, though the music on that one is more Celtic.

I haven't listened to any of the Tubular Bells follow-ups sequels, though it seems like TB III is recommended?

Can't say much more... Incantations with preference (or if you want it live + TB, Exposed is great)

INCANTATIONS

The first track is my favorite with its amphetamine-like strings and superb flute playing. Some great drums and tuned percussion and of course Oldfield's unique guitar sound and styling.

nice description although you left out that gem of a trumpet peice with its call and answer style.

overall I prefer Part 3 with Pierre heavily involved and some wonderfull guitar at the beginning

I happen to quite like Heaven's Open! It's the electric counterpart of the previous Amarok, and it's a fun and loose album. And it's the only album with Mike doing lead vocals. The title song should've been a huge hitsingle. And the monkeys from Music from the Balcony make me smile, just like the Thatcher-impersonator on Amarok does.

My real recommendations though to the OP would be, after indeed getting Hergest Ridge:

1. Incantations
2. Five Miles Out
3. Crises

From then on it's pick and choice and see what you like. Some like Heaven's Open, some don't. Some like Platinum and QE2, I don't. Some like anything Oldfield's done since TB2.

True. A rather lengthy album I found it strange this time Oldfield went for a Native American subject rather than Celtic with Longfellow's Hiawatha in Part Two. I'm not sure if it was Maddy Prior or Sally Oldfield that sang the haunting song.

Maddy as Dean stated.

You can also see these in action on the "Exposed" DVD ... which is fabulous and shows a veritable who's who of musicians in there ... if you haven't seen it, you have no idea how good Pierre Moerlin is!

Its a very nice DVD for sure although its worth mentioning the Exposed CD is different to the DVD and the performance is superior on the CD version (imo) so don't assume that the DVD covers the CD. In short get both!
