Pawn Hearts, Tales, and Ummagumma are definitely among my favorites for those 3 bands.

It's gotta be Pawn Hearts, as well as pretty much everything in Extreme Prog

I guess it's a love it or hate it? But whether it is or not my favorite from the list is Pawn Hearts. I don't really see Ummagumma as one whatsoever though.

Weird.  I neither love nor hate Pawn Hearts.

Like everyone else so far, I voted for Pawn Hearts. My other faves on the list are MDK and Ummagumma.  My "other" choices would be for Can's Tago Mago and Tangerine Dream's Zeit.

This.

And it also happens to be the best of the list.

Between MDK and Pawn Hearts for me. But being PH has 7 votes already and MDK has Zero, I'll go with MDK

I don't love Brain Salad Surgery but I certainly don't hate it at all either. Same goes for Stardust We Are, but BSS gets my vote.

I really don't like any of the others at all.

Pawn Hearts is the obvious choice.

But I do love Lumpy Gravy and MDK as well.

Hmm...

You know, it's funny I thought about adding Can's "tago mago" but I really don't know if it's polarizing enough. I also thought of Zeit strangely enough. I'm not that familiar with it and only heard "tago mago" once so I suppose it's just as well. Good to see them mentioned though. Another one I could have and probably should have added is Echolyn's "mei."

Another careless omission on my part. I actually think this would have been a better album for this particular list than TAAB which I don't think is all that polarizing.

It's simple. I'm referring to albums that fans typically tend to either love or hate. There often isn't much middle ground. Genesis had one that I didn't put on here(something about a lamb Wink).

Pawn Hearts for sure. Plague is one of my top 3 songs ever, and the other two on the album are remarkable too.

Brain Salad Surgery is my favourite album of all time.

Quite like some of the others on the list. Pawn Hearts makes me smile a little its so mad.

My actual 'love hate' prog album is Relayer  although Lamb Lies Down On Broadway comes close as well. I love and hate those albums equally depending on my mood and which track I'm listening to.

Nice poll. The overrating of Pawn Hearts is blatantly laid bare .
My choice: Ummagumma followed by Brain Salad Surgery.

Tales. Love it.

I am currently digging:

Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz!

Please drop me a message with album suggestions.

I think the idea is that these albums polarise opinion a lot of the time.

If that's the case, then I vote for Pawn Hearts. I love that album.

Lumpy Gravy's my favorite from the list, one of my top 2 or 3 Zappa albums.  I don't know if this vote is also a vote of agreement that it's a love it or hate it album, but I guess that doesn't matter.

Well, from these ones, Brain Salad is the one that I prefer, and yes, this album has lights and shadows, but some of the lights are really lights. Personally I enjoy too much Karn Evil 9 Part Three and Still...you turn me on, two outstanding tracks.

Tales from topographic has some good moments too.

I understand what you're saying with regard to Relayer. It can be mindblowing. It can just be migraine inducing.

Never really got into BSS to be honest. Jerusalem left me completely cold, which wasn't a good start, and it went down hill from there. Trilogy is a far better album imo..

I love Pawn Hearts (though it's not my fave by VdGG). Parts of that (and Magma's MDK, which is another great album) are so mad / cracked, that I just bust out laughing at certain points. And the band itself has the same reaction (they've told me as much)!

Trilogy is a much softer well rounded album and production wise was far less 'compressed' than BSS. Eddie Offord's influence was missed  in some respects BUT then Trilogy doessn't have anything like the manic Toccata or the dark symphonic beauty of Karn Evil 9 which represent exactly what I want prog to be.

For me all of those albums have some good and some not so good things about them,  but even though I own 5 VDGG LP's , they have always been a love/hate thing for me. I listened to Pawn Hearts today and while there are some brilliant moments on it there are also some very challenging bits where I feel like fast forwarding to the next section. I also feel that way about much of TFTO.

How is Brain Salad Surgery not winning this poll?? Oh yeah, because of Van der Graaf Generator again.. they don't seem to be capable of losing on this site. Anyway for me it's a slam dunk for BSS. Then Tales(really good album once you get into it but not one of Yes' very best imo). Then the debut from Genesis, which I quite like but then there's not one Genesis album that I don't like(including Calling All Stations).
