So, this is the last in the series of polls on Tull's classic albums. I just don't have the stomach to discuss the merits (or demerits, in this case) of A, Broadsword and the Breast or Under Wraps. Its like picking ugly girls as the bar closes for the night. In any case, we have the last two albums of Tull's folk trilogy, Heavy Horses (field and farm) vs Stormwatch (sea and sky). I would consider Heavy Horses a better album, but I've always had a soft spot for Stormwatch, a very consistent album with melancholy tingeing the songs (perhaps because bassist John Glascock was very ill and died after the album's release). ------------- ...a vigorous circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology... |

Stormwatch's great, but Heavy Horses is simply in a different league altogether, so it's an easy choice. -------------

Heavy Horses for the title song itself. But not only for it. ...and btw, I like Stomwatch too. I consider it to be their last classic album. The end of one era of JT for me.

I think most of us agree that Stormwatch was the last of their classic era. After that album John Glascock died and Barriemore Barlow, John Evan and David Palmer were, for all intents and purposes, fired by Ian Anderson. They were never the same, although I did appreciate Dave Pegg on bass (but his abilities were never on display with Tull as they were with Fairport Convention). ------------- ...a vigorous circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology... |

Totally agree with you Tom. Peggy was a fantastic asset to 80s and 90s Tull. His Fairport work is OK if you like that sort of (diddly diddly) stuff, however he was so much better (on bass) with Tull than Fairport IMHO. He got to rock again as he did in his early Birmingham bands in the 60s. I think Peggy would agree with me on that one.

| Heavy Horses was a great let-down after what had preceded it (sans Too Old to Rock and 'n' Roll'); a little too pastoral and meandering for my tastes. Stormwatch was a somewhat reinventing of the band, but that's not saying much. I've only heard it a few times and was generally unimpressed. Thank goodness A came along the next year to redeem the exploits of Mr. Anderson (and thank you, Eddie Jobson). |
