I'd like to know more about the bands of the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish 70's scene....

Because when you read about a band in a book, or in a website, ypou always read: United Kingdom... but... what part of it? Confused not all prog from Uk was english

What were the most important bands from this countries?

I only know that Gnidrolog were welsh and String Driven Thing were scottish.

Can Gentle Giant be considered half-scottish?

Northern Ireland: don't know (although I lived there for a while)

Wales: Man and probably Magenta too

Hi,

See if you can find MAN's "Begood to yourself at least once a day" album ... it is a fold out ... and then look at the map in there ... it is all musicians and their inter-relations ... and you need not ask more questions and you have plenty to follow up on ...

Warning. The list is mostly rock oriented stuff so the majority of folk/traditional stuff is not listed in there ... but it's still really good and worth it ... someone needs to plunk that on abig picture and show it here ... it's awesome.

FRUUP - were from Belfast.

Ian Anderson has remarked many times that he is a Briton. That can mean anything though.Confused

A couple of fringe bands from Scotland for you: The Sensational Alex Harvey Band (SAHB) and Stone the Crows (Maggie Bell and Les Harvey, brother of the aforementioned Alex).

In terms of prog itself, with Man (Wales) you can add Deke Leonard;s Iceberg, The Neutrons, Help Yourself and Slapp Happy.

Rory Gallagher (ex Taste) was from NI;

if Eire counts Thin Lizzy and Horslips are definitely on your radar.

Best I can do off the top of my head.

Just to add to my previous post., there were 70s Welsh bands The Bystanders and The Jets and also a guy called Dave Edmunds - solo, and "Rockpile" who I think started in Love Sculpture.

I think all these acts are on MOSHKITO's Man album map anyway - I've just tried to pick what's currently left of my brains in case you can't find it.

Trouble is the UK's so small geographically you could easily finf a band with an Englishman, Welshman, Scot, etc etc together anyway.

Oh - my final effort - Van Morrison (Them) was definitely from Belfast NI

A 1960s Scottish band recently added to Prog Related - Clouds

And of course the Incredible String Band were Scots too.

From Wales there is Blonde on Blonde

on the Psyche Pop scene you have Marmalade and Amen Corner (Scotland & Wales respectively)

I sincerely hope this is an obscure prog band I've never heard of... rather than the ex-Sun Page Three girls Jilly Johnson and Nina Carter???  Who apparently released a couple of singles yonks ago and had the sheer cheek to call themselves after a Dylan album? Please tell me I'm wrong here

That Blonde on Blonde is Prog Related (ie was once related to Prog by marriage Wink)

This Bloned on Blonde is indeed an (not so) obscure prog band you've never heard of http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=3298 (also named after a Robert Zimmerman album)

........... and last spotted drinking coffee at Maggie's in Botanic Avenue, Belfast.

I did not know Fruupp was from Northern Ireland. My respect and interest in the four albums (their full discography) has risen very considerable.

A final note: A prog rock band from Ireland/Northern Ireland was ambushed and all members shot dead in the beginning of the 1970s in Northern Ireland.
