Some of mine:

Storm Thorgerson.
Most notebly the cover artist for several Pink Floyd and Genesis albums, as well as The Mars Volta's ''De-Loused in the Comatorium'', and Muse's ''Black Holes and Revelations''. I am a big fan of these works by him, but I don't really like the stuff he did for bands like Dream Theater, Yes and Led Zeppelin, but overall he is responsible for some of my favorite album art of all time.

Alex Grey.
Tool. Enough said.

Gerald Scarfe.
He is responsible for all of ''The Wall'''s artwork.

Roger Dean.
Obviousely his Yes artwork is the most recognized, and with good reason. The man is a genious. He has also done work for Osibisa, Atomic Rooster, Budgie, Uriah Deep, Greenslade, Asia, ABWH.

Mark Wilkinson.
Did the Fish-era Marillion artwork. Truly brilliant man.

Hugh Syme -- All of Rush's stuff and some of Dream Theater's.

Hipnosis -- (not sure if it's a person or company) a lot of bizarre stuff, but also most of Pink Floyd's stuff. One of my favorites is Pink Bubbles Go Ape by Helloween (just weird).

There's others... their names elude me at the moment

Aside from Roger, let us not forget Dave Rowe, Rodney Matthews and Patrick Woodroffe, as well as Graham Garside, who did the interiors for the Mandalaband's Eye of Wendor (and then moved on to Jamie and the Magic Torch-- go figure).

Apart from some already mentioned, whoever does the Ayreon covers. I can't seem to find his name at the moment.

Paul Whitehead, his covers for Van der Graff Generator and Genesis from "Tresspass" to "Foxtrot" are really amazing.

the name is Hipgnosis.

I very much like the cover art Rabhi Abou-Khalil does for his own albums. a few examples:

the ornaments are very complex and very nicely done

In no order

  • Paul Whitehead: Genesis Covers, Trespass is my favorite from this artist, less descriptive but more oneiric.

  • Kim Poor: Steve Hackett albums

  • H. R. Giger: Brain Salad Surgery:

Avoiding Roger Dean who is always in a top list.

Dave McKean is a good choice, I've been enjoying his comix covers for many years, and Jef Bertels is a fine sci-fi artist in the classic traditiion

I have to say, though, I've grown much more fond of abstract images - Thrak, Gilgamesh's Arriving Twice, stuff like that - and find I prefer them to more normal images

I haven't heard that Gilgamesh album yet and didn't even know it existed; I certainly had not expected a new release from them, knowing that their head, keyboarder Alan Gowen, sadly died some 15 years ago. it seems to be a strange album (in it's form, I mean), something like a sampler, since it contains archive material with different versions of songs that appeared on their first album

Stanley Donwood anyone?

/fanboy Wink
(he did all of the Radiohead covers which I must say are brilliant)
Probably his best work was for The Eraser. The artwork for which may be found here: http://theeraserart.blogspot.com/

Nobody touches Mark Wilkinson. To be honest the only reason I decided to explore Marillion in the first place was a small article on the album artwork for Script For A Jester's Tear in the corner of an issue of Classic Rock magazine.

Pink Floyd have had some absolutely amazing covers but I don't believe they were all done by one artist.
