I like the idea of albums as it gives a better representation of ones tastes (and might help in discussion and for discovering new-to-us albums).
This really has to be my long post in a while since I've fallen behind on work (I work on my computer from home mostly and am a big procrastinator and not always the best with time management, but posting here kind of helps to get my brain firing on all one cylinder). Canterbury Scene: Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom (1974) Crossover Prog: David Axelrod - Song of Innocence (1968) Eclectic Prog: Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant assassin des mouches (1972) Experimental/Post Metal: Maudlin of the Well - Leaving Your Body Map (2001) Heavy Prog: Atomic Rooster - Death Walks Behind You (1970) Indo-Prog/Raga Rock: Clivage - Mixtus Orbis (1978) Jazz Rock/Fusion: Herbie Hancock - Crossings (1972) Krautrock: Brave New World - Impressions on Reading Aldous Huxley (1972) Neo-Prog: Marc Ceccotti - Sometimes Around Saturn (2008) Post Rock/Math Rock: Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die (1996) Prog Folk: Perry Leopold - Christian Lucifer [archival, recorded in 1973] Progressive Electronic: Franco Leprino - Integrati ... Disintegrati (1977) Progressive Metal: Diablo Swing Orchestra - The Butcher's Ballroom (2006) Psychedelic/Space Rock: J.A. Ceasar - Kokkyo Junreika (1973) Rock in Oppostion: Art Zoyd - Génération sans futur (1980) Avant-Prog: Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Osorezan / Dou no Kenbai (1976) Rock Progressivo Italiano: Area - Caution Radiation Area (1974)* Symphonic Prog: Clearlight Symphony (1975)** Tech/Extreme Prog Metal: Voivod - Nothingface (1989) Zeuhl: Magma - Magma [aka Kobaïa] (1970) Various Genres/Artists: Mort Garson - The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds (1967) Prog Related: John Cale & Terry Riley - Church of Anthrax (1971) Proto-Prog: The United States of America - The United States of America (1968) Of course I could have gone with various other choices, but I'm happy with my list. * That Area album isn't really RPI despite the band being in RPI, it's avant- prog/ jazz-rock. My Neo-Prog album is more space-rock than Neo-Prog, but I'm not going for most representative in my list. ** While I love Clearlight Symphony, were William Sheller's Lux Aeterna included in PA, that would be my pick. Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

^ Cool spin on this , doing the albums instead of the bands. I may have to try this too.

For this list, I decided to choose favourite albums rather than favourite bands because I feel that this a better representation. Also, although each subgenre is represented, a number of subgenre are represented by only a single album, which are listed even though they can hardly be regarded as a "favourite". Canterbury Scene: Hatfield and the North (Hatfield and the North)

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

I don't have "a" favourite in each category, it's several favourites in most of them, and many in a few of them. That said, I'll try to choose one (band or artist) from each. I have done this before, but I'm thinking this up again. I went with several for two choices, split RIO and Avant, and differentiated Canterbury Scene from Sound, and in many cases I could have gone for others. Was tempted to split Psych and Space (and kind of wanted to mention Gong under Space even though it's in Canterbury).
Canterbury Scene/Sound: Robert Wyatt for Scene, Cos for Sound Crossover Prog: David Axelrod Eclectic Prog: Jean-Claude Vannier Experimental/Post Metal: Maudlin of the Well Heavy Prog: High Tide Indo-Prog/Raga Rock: Clivage Jazz Rock/Fusion: Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock Krautrock: Popol Vuh Neo-Prog: Marc Ceccotti Post Rock/Math Rock: Tortoise Prog Folk: Perry Leopold and Comus Progressive Electronic: Igor Wakhevitch and Zanov Progressive Metal: Diablo Swing Orchestra Psychedelic/Space Rock: Älgarnas Trädgård RIO/Avant-Prog: Art Zoyd for RIO, The Residents for Avant Prog Rock Progressivo Italiano: Area Symphonic Prog: Clearlight Tech/Extreme Prog Metal: Voivod Zeuhl: Magma Various Genres/Artists: The Zodiac - Cosmic Sounds Prog Related: David Bowie and Terry Riley Proto-Prog: The United States of America EDIT: Missed adding my pick to one category, and it was one of my favourites on the list. ^ yea, There are several that I haven't really checked out much. I was going to put PFM for Italian but they are really the only band I know. They have RIO listed with Avant. The rest I don''t really know. I gotta get out more.

It looks like you skipped RIO, tech/extreme metal, post/experimental metal, RPI(Italian prog)raga and electronic. I think that's about it. Nice list though.

I've only been here six weeks, so even if a list of favourite artists in each Prog-related genre has been done before, it's good to see a new one, because all of the previous favourite artists lists passed me by long before I arrived here. It might be a good time for me to travel back in time and take a look at some of the older favourites lists to see what I've missed out on.

I know someone probably did this before I what the heck, Give us your favorite band from each prog sub genre.
Do as few or as many sub genres as you like ( I'm not familiar with all of them so I skipped a few)
