A-Z of Space Rock
THE 4 LEVELS OF EXISTENCE The 4 Levels of Existence only existed just long enough to produce one album, recorded in about ten hours and released on an obscure underground label, but that's the stuff of which prog legends are made. The album is a tasty Greek salad of Psychedelic Rock, spiced up with a light sprinkling of feta cheese. The lyrics are all in Greek, but that's part of its endearing charm. In spiritual tradition, the name of the band and eponymous album is a reference to the four Sanskrit levels of human existence. Namely, the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. To improve physical well-being, you could try walking, stretching, massage, yoga, running, dancing or swimming. Or alternatively, if that all sounds like too much hard work and you want to save a lot of time and effort, why not just listen to the album instead. It'll only take 35 minutes of your time and you don't even need to take any vitamin supplements. ![]() ![]() |

Das stimmt. There's only one German Oak listed on Discogs, so it looks like the other German Oak are some obscure Neo-Nazi skinhead outfit. Himmel verboten!

I will listen to 'Space Combustion' ;apparently, I will need to listen some of these LPs on Youtube since ironically Youtube Music is missing majority of the albums. Funnily, searching for 'German Oak' on YT Music returns a modern band instead with titles like 'Third Reich' and stuff. I doubt that's the original German Oak referred here.

No guitar smashing here, but this is Space Rock Sunday Lunch with Toyah & Robert having a smashing time performing Hawkwind's Silver Machine, although it sounds like Robert forgot to plug in his electric guitar.

There is Nektar and Neu! mentioned as well. I have listened to 'A Tab in the Ocean' but found it a tad too long. That being said, this post reminded me of listening to one of their shorter live albums now. Neu! is great. The opener Hallogallo's motorik beat defines it. Too bad the rest of the album doesn't reach the same standard, still, good enough to have in one's collection.

I tried Nik Turner's album, some good sound on it though I was expecting the sax to take more of a centrestage considering he played that instrument [like with VdGG, where the sax sometimes seems like the lead instrument]. The Clash, technically, rarely smashed their guitars on stage. This image was taken on one of the rare occasions when bassist Paul Simonon [who wasn't a virtuoso or anything but probably had a grand moral standing; he was the only member who refused to reunite for Rock n Roll induction saying that if the band is to be united, it's first show shouldn't be in front of rich musicians] smashed his instrument. At the risk of diverting the topic, I think smashing guitars, was made famous by Pete Townshend of The Who for whom it was a ritual. Some of their songs are quite forward looking and make more use of instruments than the traditional drums, guitar and bass. Most famously, he used synthesizers very well; notably in the opening of Baba O' Riley.

That's true. I doubt if any self-respecting Progressive Rock musicians would smash up their guitars on-stage - apart from Ritchie Blackmore, obviously. ![]() |

I will try Nik Turner's Space Gypsy soon [added it to my library]. I don't mind different genres. My profile image is after all, way different from any progressive rock :p.

You could set off on the hippie trail first of all with Nik Turner's Space Gypsy.... ![]() ....And follow that up with my favourite album by Pierre Moerlen's Gong, although it's a long way Downwind from Space Rock. ![]() ![]() |

I was at the Caravan gig of that series - I was living in London then but made a special trip home for it. The Bier Keller is long gone but in the mid 80s it hosted several prog artists. I saw the Maximum Effect (ICU without Nik more or less) there. As for the beer....

Which Nik Turner solo album in your opinion is the best introduction for a beginner/is closest in sound to 70s Hawkwind? Gong was mentioned and I have listened to few albums by them. I really liked You by them [Isle of Everywhere is on that LP, right?] though not much otherwise. Camel's sound is great though like with many bands, I personally felt that their vocal delivery was weak. I listened to Hawkwind's second LP and their live Space Ritual. The second one has multiple all time great songs. The live LP is a mixed bag, IMO. Whilst it represents the band at it's live peak, there are moments when the band seems to monologue about space [atleast couple of songs on it have no corresponding album versions ].
