SYNANTHESIA Another long-lost Psych-Folk treasure from the London underground of the late-1960's, Synanthesia received no radio airplay and no backing from their RCA record company, but now, thanks to the modern wonders of YouTube and the Internet, Synanthesia have finally emerged above ground again over fifty years later, Just as the Curtain Finally Falls. ![]() ![]() |

SUNFOREST Bizarrely listed as Psychedelic/Space Rock here on ProgArchives, Sunforest were an American folk trio who followed the hippie trail to London. Sunforest enjoyed their brief moment in the sunlight when two of their songs were featured in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange - a mixed blessing maybe, as the controversial movie was banned in the UK for 27 years and remembered now mainly for its disturbing violence and not for its soundtrack. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - February 08 2025 at 09:13 |

THE SUN ALSO RISES Named after a novel by Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises comprised of married couple Graham and Anne Hemingway (see the connection?), whose particular brand of mystical, minimalistic folk music told Wonderous Stories of elves, fairies and dragons, so no doubt they'd have enjoyed a magical night out in the forest with Jon Anderson singing Songs from the Wood, and coincidentally, their one and only self-titled album was produced by Ian Anderson (no relation) of Jethro Tull fame. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - February 08 2025 at 07:50 |

BIG JIM SULLIVAN How long does it take to tune a sitar? About as long as it takes to learn to play guitar..... Big Jim Sullivan was the man who taught Jimmy Page how to play guitar as well as currying favour with George Harrison by introducing him to the sitar. What D'yer Mak'er that!? ![]() ![]() |

STRING DRIVEN THING A raucous, hard-bitten, string-driven Scottish folk rock band (consisting of married couple Chris & Pauline Adams) who played almost any stringed instruments they could lay their hands on, including the electric violin, and it's rumoured their recording contract with Charisma came with strings attached too. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

STRAWBS Some Prog Folk bands have been as ephemeral as the proverbial Dragonfly, but the Strawbs have been Ringing Down the Years now for well over half a century with an impressive discography that's positively Bursting at the Seams with 25 albums. The Strawbs debut album - recorded in 1967 - which they were proud to call All Our Own Work, featured the Hero and Heroine of Prog Folk: Dave Cousins and Sandy Denny. Dave Cousins has been the driving force behind the Strawbs throughout their long career and Sandy Denny is of course best-known now for her association with Fairport Convention, where her haunting refrains still conjure up the Ghosts of halcyon days gone by, unlike the Grave New World we live in now. The Strawbs diverse albums are much more than Just a Collection of Antiques and Curios though. They released a whole string of classic albums in the early 1970's to meet various record company Deadlines. The Strawbs folky songs From the Witchwood range anywhere from Folk Rock to Baroque & Roll with some of their Deep Cuts being a full-on Prognostic experience. Their latest album was released earlier this year, but who knows if that will be their final Settlement. Let's hope not. Don't Say Goodbye to the Strawbs just yet, as there may be still more to come. That's The Magic of It All. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - February 06 2025 at 10:15 |

STRANGE DAYS Maybe the proggiest of all the Prog Folk bands, Strange Days once infamously sailed 9 Parts to the Wind by sharing the same stage with The Sex Pistols. Strange Days indeed. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - January 31 2025 at 03:43 |

STORYTELLER A short-lived Prog Folk band from London who broke up due to poor record sales and lack of funds. A story as old as music itself. Storyteller are one of the great "might-have-beens", having once shared the stage with Hawkwind, Vinegar Joe and The Humblebums. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

STORM CORROSION I was 'opeth for the best from these two giants of prog (Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree & Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth), but the end result is less than the sum of its parts. Storm Corrosion is a listless and uninspiring Post Rock album that's likely to gather rust through lack of use. ![]() ![]() |

STONE ANGEL Closely related to the gentle folk troubadours Midwinter, although winter woollies are optional for Stone Angel when The Wind Blows Cold. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - January 29 2025 at 09:26 |

AL STEWART A Scottish singer/songwriter whose signature song "Year of the Cat" was actually written and recorded during the Vietnamese Year of the Cat. Not a lot of people know that. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - January 28 2025 at 02:05 |

CAT STEVENS A best-selling English folk singer/songwriter who bizarrely decided to convert to the Islamic faith at the tail end of 1977 (adopting the name Yusuf Islam), thereby wrecking his successful career, but we all make mistakes in life. Personally, I much prefer Cat Stevens' traditional "Morning Has Broken" over Yusuf Islam's radical "Ramadan Moon". ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - January 29 2025 at 09:27 |

STEELEYE SPAN Plenty of Folk, but not much Prog from Maddy Prior & Co.... If you're tired of hearing the mournful dirge that is "Gaudete" or the irritatingly happy-clappy "All Around My Hat" every Christmas, then I'd recommend skipping this bumper bundle of albums from Steeleye Span. You'd be better off listening to Steely Dan instead. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

STEALERS WHEEL Long before Baker Street made him an international Star, Gerry Rafferty was Stuck in the Middle with Joe Egan in the early 1970's Folk Rock duo Stealers Wheel. Younger audiences may remember Stealers Wheel best of all for their signature song accompanying the iconic torture scene in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs (1992). That gruesome scene is far too disturbing to show here though, so here's something altogether more pleasant instead, where the only shocking thing are the 1970's fashions on display in the studio. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

JOHN ST. FIELD He's better-known to us all as Jackie Leven, a Scottish folk and country singer and man of many names who modestly describes himself as "a songwriter of genius". This is Jackie Leven's first album and the only album he recorded under the name of John St. Field. ![]() |
