I haven't researched more than what the news piece had but will this turn into another Trayvon Martin case? Will race be an issue here for CNN FOXNEWS and all of them to play with?

C'mon Teo, you have lived in the US long enough to know nothing else matters outside of the US. Wink

The only thing that has been released to the news is that the homeowner claims that he accidentally shot her.  I don't think that any other "fact" will ever be revealed until someone develops the power to talk to the dead.   Obviously, everything else is speculation on our parts.

I don't know what that means.  The gun discharged on its own.  His finger was on the trigger and bumped it but he didn't mean to pull it.  He thrust the gun at her in a threat to make her leave and the gun went off either because of A or B.  She reached for the gun and in their struggle it went off.  He meant to shoot a warning shot at her head and instead hit her.

There are so many murder capitals of the world that Detroit would really have to step up its game if it wants to claim that title.

I think Detroit is the job-murder capital of the world though.

If the world is just the US then yes Detroit is the murder capital of the world. (Ciudad Juarez, many cities in Honduras and many other would beg to differ if we are talking about the larger world). But even in those places it wouldn't be considered anything else than a murder the indiscriminate shooting of someone for the exposed reasons. If more is found out and we learn she was threatening the shooter, I would reconsider that.

You do realize that the city of Detroit is the murder capital of the world?  The man had every right to be on edge about someone banging on his door at 4:00 in the morning.  In retrospect and with a clear mind, the obvious right answer would have been to dial 911 and have the police come and take care of the situation, but in the heat of the moment he chose wrong.

I am picturing the old timer in sitcoms/movies coming out with a shotgun yelling "you kids get off of my lawn", and then the gun went off.

Though I'm in favor of allowing people to own guns and keep them at hometo protect their homes and family, it can't be denied that shooting somebody because they are on your porch being obnoxious is just a little bit of a stretch in the "defend my family and property" thing...

Some people are just too quick with the trigger

*shrug* as far as I know knocking on someone's door is not generally seen as attempted house-breaking no matter how intoxicated the person was or what hour it was. It was not an unfortunate accident.

If she hadn't been drunk and on marijuana she wouldn't have been on his front porch banging on the door at 4 O'Clock in the morning.  She was uninvited and on his property at a time of day when only bad things generally happen.  Whether I agree with it or not, in the US people are allowed to own guns and defend themselves with them.   I do question how he "Accidentally" shot her but I imagine that it was a result of the unfortunate situation that he put himself in.

If he didn't pull the trigger she'd still be alive. If he didn't have a gun she'd still be alive. No matter how you look at it, it was not an unfortunate accident.

This makes me sad.  The news agencies have been just dying for another case like this to happen so that they can jump all over it.  http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/15/justice/michigan-woman-shot-charges/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

This is truly a case of lose-lose.  I feel horrible for the girl who died and her family, but this is one of those situations where it seems a prosecutor is trying to make a name for herself as well as a fear of Jesse Jackson and his ilk.  I am pretty certain that the man had no criminal intent to kill this girl and I don't feel he should necessarily be punished for it.  I am not saying that the girl deserved to die nor that the man necessarily had the right to shoot her.  I think that he either made a bad decision in a situation that he did not make or the gun did accidentally discharge as has been mentioned within various news reports.

^ A nasty little minded comment. My intention for posting the link was not to guilt the Japanese people. Forget guilt, it is way past time for all of the world to remedy this. All nuclear plants on tectonic plates should be shut down. All nuclear plants located close to water should be shut down. More money should be spent on developing cleaner energy sources.

not very good news for the Pacific Northwest

Maybe we could saw this coming by supporting nuclear energy in the first place!
It might be the Japanese kamikaze-style plan to finally take revenge for Hiroshima and Nagasaki....
