Which album did you listen to? The album listed in this poll is actually their fourth album according to PA.

Originality is clearly not a requirement for people to like something, though. Änglagård have less original thought in their music than Opeth, but as per this poll, people love them.

I couldn’t really choose between a few albums here, so rolled a die, and it came up Present.

I realise that I didn't vote in this poll. I voted for Present's Triskaidekaphobie over Thinking Plague's debut (my faves by TP are I think Moonsongs and Is This the Life? but I like the debut too) and Cardiacs' A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window (which I don't count as the debut anyway). I love later Guapo albums, but don't have the debut. Swans has been my favourite bands of late overall, but I am into the Children of God and up ones (although I do like earlier music).

As for Opeth, I think Paul might like the more recent albums which do seem pretty derivative and retro to my ears. That said, I'm more of a heard a smattering of Opeth than full albums generally cause I haven't been a fan.
Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I observed before. It can be much like that with music for me; immersed in experiencing the moment.

not an original thought? Really? Because what Opeth did in the 90s was quite unique. I get that you don't like what they did, but calling them unoriginal for what they did in the 90s is just wrong.

You've got me wondering now which one of Opeth's albums is their magnum 'opeless and the one to avoid at all costs. Ermm

you've been explained three times already, by a couple of users here which Opeth albums to listen to, but I guess you're not paying much attention... Ermm

I haven't read through very much of this thread, and so the same points may have been made already but the zenith and nadir of Opeth's music will depend on the listener (Paul, your preferences are often quite atypical here and more mainstream and pop-rock oriented than many it seems). Opeth's later period music (say from Heritage up) would be a disappointment to many who preferred the earlier music. It become more retro, more hard and psychedelic rock than the earlier more metal and death metal music.   One can find similarities to Jethro Tull, and various classic Prog bands.

For instance, this has a Jethro Tull sound:

I like the folk rock aspects, but then I can say that for a lot of Opeth's music, although I wouldn't think that you would like that Comus' First Utterance as an influence, so much so that lyrics were quoted for one of the albums. This is one band that I think you would be better off working backwards (I know that isn't the way you roll) or starting with Heritage and working your way forward in time, and then go backwards with the discography from Heritage than your usual discography route. I find Pale Communion enjoyable, but for a different listener, this would be part of the "lame" era.

I think you might like this as an example (it would lack the aggression and darkness that some liked with Opeth music):

The debut would be weak to you I think.

Not many were paying attention to them when I saw them!  Lol!

Not at all what I meant.

You've become that user that instantly complains when seeing Opeth mentioned, your new fixation it seems. You can stop, everyone already knows how much you hate Opeth.

When Dream and Day Unite is The Astonishing debut by Dream Theater and Awake-up call for fans of Progressive Metal. It's the only Dream Theater album to feature their original singer, Charlie Dominici. In a Dramatic Turn of Events, Dominici announced he was leaving the band after the recording of their first album, due to the age-old band problem of "artistic differences".  Singer James LaBrie was recruited from a cast of hundreds for the recording of Dream Theater's second album in 1992 and he's still with the band in 2022. Dream Theater's outstanding second album remains their most commercially successful  album to date - Images and Words can't express just how good this album is. It was A Change of Seasons and a change of keyboard player in 1995 with Kevin Moore leaving the band to be replaced by Derek Sherinian. Dream Theater were in Systematic Chaos in 2010 with the sudden departure of their long-time drummer Mike Portnoy due to exhaustion following a gruelling world tour, but with a Train of Thought following the dictum of  Black Clouds & Silver Linings, Dream Theater announced the recruitment of new drummer Mike Mangini who's been with the band ever since. The Astonishing thing about Dream Theater's longevity is how they've withstood the Distance Over Time, despite several major line-up changes along the way.:-

Lead Vocals:- Charlie Dominici (1987-1989); James LaBrie (1991-2022)
Guitars:- John Petrucci (1985-2022)
Bass:- John Myung (1985-2022)
Keyboards:- Kevin Moore (1985-1994); Derek Sherinian (1995-1999); Jordan Rudess (1999-2022)
Drums:- Mike Portnoy (1985-2010); Mike Mangini (2010-2022)

Ookaay, that's more than I can say - even I like an album with Univers Zero (Clivages), and wouldn't mind to find some more that I could be fond of. Big smile
Edit:
And if we talk about Zeuhl, that's something else.

I got that, but go and listen to the albums that fit in the symphonic metal genre.

Ideally, I'd like to have replaced Therion in the poll with Ayreon, but that would be a case of my heart overruling my head. Common sense prevailed in the end. Tongue

Therion were the main creators of the genre, ignoring them would make NO sense. It's like talking about symphonic prog but ignore Yes or Genesis.

While we're on the subject of Ayreon, here's their first awesome album. I still can't help feeling Ayreon fully deserved to be included in this poll, but that will forever remain an Actual Fantasy.  Confused
