Al Di Meola and Allan Holdsworth were very close but Di Meola gets the nod. Zappa, the guitarist, gets third place.

As much as I admire Gabriel's solo career, I'd say Holdsworth.

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Mike Oldfield
I did expect to see Al Stewart on the list as a 'prog tinged' solo artist

1a) Frank Zappa 1b) Mike Oldfield I think that even the greatest Zappa records - Hot Rats, Waka/Jawaka, Roxy & Elsewhere, you name it - can't beat Oldfield at his best. But sheer volume of Frank's work (and his consistency in the 70s) gives him a nod. 03) Peter Hammill 04) Steve Hackett 05) Peter Gabriel
