Topic: Vinyl, CD or Digital Posted: November 16 2013 at 10:03 |
Definitely CDs for me. As said, the quality is better although there is some special, more emotional aura that comes along with the vinyl, but because I wasn't born in that era, I'm probably not going to be as sentimental with it as those who were are. I also like how with CDs you have a sort of mixture with the physical and more personal effect of the vinyl, but like digital and cassettes, you aren't as restricted to sit in a dark room - you can go for walks with much more beautiful sceneries as you listen. If you want to though you can still really concentrate (maybe on your first couple of listens) in a darkened room. I could go on but I won't bore you CDs take my vote!

CD's because it's cheaper and takes less space than Vinyls.

Is that maybe because you can play it numerous times and the thing doesn't warp or groove?
I think yes.

I would have guessed that captain 'Recent Purchases'
With all the music you buy, like me, if you bought it all on vinyl you'd be broke.

Now remember. Ya gotta ask yourself this question, 'I am in the business of buying music that just sounds alright or do I want to buy music of the highest sound quality possible?' for me, just 'alright' sounding doesn't cut it for me. I want the best and I believe my ears deserve that, especially for how much I love and adore music. Anytime a band/record company decides to release CD editions in either special, limited, deluxe, mega or whatever it may be I am happy spend the extra coin, especially for those 5.1 cd/DVD editions. Well worth it. :)

Yeah, I've bought quite a few used vinyls over the past year or so. The only bummer was Van Damme Generator's Pawn Hearts, which I actually bought on the premise of it being an original pressing and in pristine condition. It turned out sounding like the album was recorded over Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music Oh well... I shot the vendor in his toe the day after.

Yeah, but most of them sound alright and the worst that has happened for me was that my copy of Crime of the Century was scratched somewhere during "Asylum". At worst it's a 10 dollar gamble and I don't think I even spent that much on it.

Of course you could always tape 'em... Hey how about storing material on video tape? 8)One thing that should be noted by those trusting their ears is that, for men at least (not sure about how women are affected here. Hear? ;) Anyway, in time our perceptions of bass and treble extremes get blunted and this deterioration in hearing is not used in assessing a recording quality.

SACD's are incredible. Easily my most prefered audio format to use with my sound equipment. All in all, I can't find much fault in what you say in your post here. I think your bang on here. Well said.

Vinyl is cheap? Not today it isn't, especially if you want 180gram quality brand new.
Just saying.

The most common way for me to listen prog rock (and music, in general) is digital and cd. But my favourite one is clearly vinyl

I'm partial to CDs personally. I did a project in college about the differing quality of these three mediums. While the digital files may come in third by a fairly wide margin, I still don't mind listening to them. If I'm on the go, working out, or just want to hear a song right then and don't have access to another option, am I going to deprive myself of the listening experience? No, that would be stupid. Plus, the quality isn't too bad, really. Maybe noticeably different, but it's not like it's unlistenable.
I do have a few vinyls of the classics, though. I enjoy having them for collecting purposes and because they sound very distinctively different than their more modern counterparts (the mellotron sounds so much better on the vinyl version of Red). Since I was born in 1990, I missed the vinyl heyday and am now catching the "vintage" wave in that regard it would seem. I never had any prog cassettes or vinyls as a kid, since my parents weren't prog fans.

Through the ages I have been through the formats, vinyl, cassettes, CDs, and Mp3. Lately I am mainly buying MP3s. Has to do with me living in a part of the world where you do not find much prog on CD. Ordering CDs becomes too expensive as apart from the postage I still would need to pay import tax on it.
Also since I purchased a 160 GB iPod some years ago, I have become used to having my whole collection with me all the time. Even when I purchase a CD it usually gets ripped into MP3 and added onto my iPod.
