wow, this thread is here to stay...
genesis – duchess
chroma key – please hang up
marillion – this is the 21st century
not sad in a *sob-sob-cry-weep* sort of way, but
sade like in *bleakness, despair, disappointment*
these are the only ones that i can think of right now.

Hey all,
Just been browsing through your forums for a little bit, definitely some interesting stuff around here.
Anyway, I couldn't let this thread go without a mention of Leonard
Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat". IMO, it is without question,
while obviously not prog, the saddest song ever written.
Progwise, I'd probably pick some Floyd, maybe Welcome to the
Machine. Or Crimson's Epitaph. It would take way too many
hours of listening to pick a serious candidate, but Cohen stll gets my
vote.
EDIT: Or Radiohead's "Exit Music (For a Film)". Don't know
if it's personal association and such, but that one's way up there as
well.

How about we try moving to the sad in a really bizarre kind of way? Bruce Springsteen - Paradise.
It's a really sad song until you realize it's about the last thoughts of a suicide bomber. Kind of takes a different turn after that. Still sad, I suppose, but in a completely different way than what you first felt when you heard it (depending I guess on your point of view).

Song for a dead friend - Kevin Gilbert.
This song will test whether you have a heart.

I can't think of a prog one at the moment, but right now I'm listening to Beth Orton's "I Wish I Never Saw The Sunshine" and i feel very sad listening to it...

Tears by Rush for progressive, and Crazy Love by Poco for "in general".

Not Prog' but for God's sake, this is depressive:
Cat Stevens
Lady d'Arbanville
My lady d'arbanville, why do you sleep so still? I'll wake you tomorrow And you will be my fill, yes, you will be my fill.
My lady d'arbanville why does it grieve me so? But your heart seems so silent. Why do you breathe so low, why do you breathe so low,
My lady d'arbanville why do you sleep so still? I'll wake you tomorrow And you will be my fill, yes, you will be my fill.
My lady d'arbanville, you look so cold tonight. Your lips feel like winter, Your skin has turned to white, your skin has turned to white.
My lady d'arbanville, why do you sleep so still? I'll wake you tomorrow And you will be my fill, yes, you will be my fill.
My lady d'arbanville why does it grieve me so? But your heart seems so silent. Why do you breathe so low, why do you breathe so low,
I loved you my lady, though in your grave you lie, I'll always be with you This rose will never die, this rose will never die.
Honestly this has to be one of the saddest I ever heard, extremely beautiful voice and music but sad lyrics.
Iván

But ironically one of the best songs ever writen( no exageration there)
But I'll also add in The Requiem in D minor left unfinished by Mozart. Mostly The Kyrie.
It was written form his death bed, nad it is the most emotional and also most brilliant piece of music i have heard of in my life. I orgasm and cry every time i hear it.

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Thankyou & welcome a board !
And to Ivan - I was wondering who will remember that old Cat Stevens' song. I should have known it will be you.
