"Signals" by Rush.
They were my favourite band at the time. The first album of theirs that came out after I had got into them was "Moving Pictures"and I loved that album (still do, if the truth be told). So, when Signals came out my expectations were high - however, none of the songs on it grabbed me at all the overall sound seemed somehow dull, compared to the brilliance of Moving Pictures, which I now realize was the pinnacle or Rush's career.
I disagree with those who picked KC's "Discipline" though - I think that's a great album!

LOL. I'm not sure I agree with this pick, but I like your humor ![]() Right now my own vote goes to Ayreon's Actual Fantasy, which I bought right after I heard The Final Experiment for the first time. Bummer.... Edited by Angelo - June 08 2006 at 15:40 |

Eveytime I start listening to a band by their third album, and then, months after that, I got the first one. Anyway, first albums are not that bad when compared to latest. Take IQ, for example. I started with "The wake" (second), then I got Subterranea; both incredible. Then, I work my way out to "Tales from the lush atic". That was not so band, but not genius stuff also. Then the latest works, wich are divided in two major groups:
1.- The "what the hell happened to this band, they sound like Rod Stewart now" kind. 2.- The "Oh, mercy, they are cloning themselves!!!" kind of album. |

From albums not in my dad's collection (meaning I spent money). My top 5:
5_ Spock's Beard - Snow ... probably the most overrated prog concept album I have heard in my life. Everything is uninteresting, cliched, and doesn't have more than a few memorable parts. (my favourite parts are the overture, Welcome to NYC, and a few instrumental parts scattered) 2/5 stars
4_Transatlantic: Bridge Across Forever: Not that bad, but it is soooo uninspired and feels like if it was done in a couple of days mostly from jam sessions. The 2 epics suffer the most from this. 2.5/5
3_Harmonium's third (last) album: not bad, but how can they become dull and lifeless after their absolute masterpiece is beyond me. 3/5 stars
2_The MArs Volta - Frances the Mute: A popular prog band that fuses genres, has a 30-minute long epic, and stays popular? that must be really good stuff (like in the case of Tool). I was disappointed, and every time, it gets more unlistenable. I should change my review, because the music is too hard to digest now. The drumming is excellent though. 2/5
And the Winner is:
1_Porcupine Tree 34: One of the worst albums I've heard in prog. An electronica-psychedelia mix that is as repetitive and dull as *insert chore here*. Not only that, but it seems to rip off Pink Floyd's "Run Like Hell" in the beginning. 1/5 DON"T BUY THIS!!!

I'd have to agree on "Signals," that was a big letdown for me. Genesis' "Invisible Touch" quickly wound up in the trash, but after the last one, it wasn't a dramatic disappointment. Yes "Big Generator" was another bomb.
The biggest one (and I am surprised no one else mentioned it) was "GTR." It sounded like such a great idea. When I heard my two favorite guitar virtuosos playing such hack tripe, it made me want to wretch. |

well it's hard to say....actually I really can't think of one
that disappointed me .if I HAD to choose one... Floyd's The Wall....
Floyd lost the balance they perfected in the 70's of GREAT music.. and
great lyrics.... call The Wall Roger Water's first solo album for all
the supposed 'group' there was in that.... groups?... oh
yeah... Rush would be first on that...was a huge fan and they
totally lost me after Signals.

A lot of Allan Holdsworth's 80's stuff is dissapointing. After having my first exposure to his playing through the raw and incredible All Night Wrong, his records IOU and Metal Fatigue (not as much so) were dissapointing, especially the vocals. I'm not saying that those albums are bad (far from it), I'm just saying that I expected to be blown away and they didn't come close to doing that.
His work with Soft Machine was quite the opposite, however! Edited by YYZed - June 08 2006 at 16:54 |
