The "problem" with prog metal

Well, I don't particularly like metal or heavy metal.  It just doesn't work for me.  I don't doubt the skill of the bands who play that kind of music, I just don't think it sounds good. 

I do however like prog metal quite a bit.  It goes beyond just playing loud and aggressive music (Not to belittle non-prog metal).

I'm an exception, I'm a big fan of 80's metal particularly thrash but there are very few prog metal bands that interest me.

That's because you're looking in the wrong direction. Please don't make blind generalisations about genres if you don't know much about them.

Well, the problem with modern progressive metal bands is that they do not produce something which could be referred to as progressive, progression to musical ideas and sounds. Most bands, stick with the past, and play what has been played already, presenting it as original, only with additional technique and supergained distortion.

I think progressive music, lost its essence, when lenghthy guitar/keyboard solos and extravagant technique was identified as progressive.

Steps to appreciating (well... at least tolerating):

1) Get over yourself.
2) Realize that the point of metal is to be over the top. 
3) If it seems cheesy, it's supposed to be cheesy.
4) Metal usually becomes bad when it's taken too seriously.
