Maybe Rush have written some very melodic and intricate music. In what I heard I didn't find too much intricacy. It was more like plain hard rock.

that is why we were trying to move Rush to Prog-Related actually.. You probably heard some samples of what they have been doing for the last 25 years. Check out the 4 or so years that they actually did do some 'prog' music. Remember.. we have groups in PR that as have as many or more traditional prog albums, and like Rush are more famous to the general music community as something other than a 'prog' band.

Watch it.
In my neck of the woods, Yes and Tull are considered generally rock as much as Rush is.
Edit: Forgot to add Pink Floyd to that too.

Not at all.
I'm saying that I find some of them uninteresting.

Tull maybe?(not by much)
They don't have the most essential songs from track to track. Most of their albums have a couple of throwaway sections somewhere, and I'm not the biggest fan of their mainstream stuff like Warchild.

All the old familiar choruses come crowding in a different key: Melodies decaying in sweet dissonance.

Jethro Tull is my least favorite among the bands listed.

by what measure.... because you like them? For example ... I think Genesis are bush leaguers in comparison to some groups, ... yet one would be a fool to say they weren't an absolutely essential prog group and one you better know before you start talking prog. You simply can't say that for Rush and let's be frank... outside of some die-hard Rush fans.. you won't hear many at all say that. You can love them... if you are going to try to sell them on the same plateau as those others... at least explain it to us ignorant types

I agree with that 100%. Even though I have been a Rush fan for over 20 years, I am well aware of the fact that they don't belong to the restricted group of the so-called "founding fathers" of prog as we know it. As great as they have been and still are, their impact on the genre is far from being comparable to Yes's, King Crimson's, and even Genesis's (who, btw, are my own least favourite act of the seven listed in the poll). I think people should distinguish between being musically great and being influential for the development of the genre as a whole, at least as some of these "first generation" bands have been. Though Rush have undoubtedly been a huge influence on prog metal, as well as on many other modern prog acts, there's no denying it's not accurate at all to put them in the same league as any of the other six bands. This is not fair to either those bands, or Rush themselves.

I think i would rate them something like this: 1. King Crimson (for being THE most progressive group out of them all, with Robert Fripp, alias Mister Prog, at the wheel) 2. Pink Floyd (for the lyrics, spaceiness, emotion, originality) 3. Tull ( For their ability to rock while being extremely melodious and folky, plus ian anderson's lyrics are sometimes very good) 4. Yes (for some beautiful compositions such as Tales, plus instrumental excellence) 5. Rush (for their charming teenage rock music of the 70's) 6. Genesis (For some of the most beautiful "classic" prog, particularly on Selling england by the pound) 7. ELP (Well... for Tarkus, mainly. Really good, and a classic piece of keyboard bonanza)
Now, i am going to leave out the details of exactly how big the gap between spots 3 and 4, and, especially, 6 and 7, but i thought that i might make an effort to turn a "negative" thread into something more positive by pointing out what i like about each band instead of the opposite, which is really a lot easier.

Im laughing at this poll, because I really like RUSH alot, but the three of them have to stand against the big boys and don't seem to be doing so well. I almost want to make another poll like this with RUSH and then a bunch of other bands that RUSH can actually beat. Poor Geddy... the half chipmunk prejudice is killing ya buddy. .

Then David and all Israel played music before God with all their might, with singing, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets.

I understand |
I'd like to know why. Most people that dislike the band can't handle Geddy Lee's voice. The overall sound is displeasing.
Outside of this, Rush has written some excellent music. Very melodic and intricate. I can tell you as well, there music has taken some time to grow on me, and this is pretty much every release since Power Windows. But let it grow I did and I'm glad I did. It just took time to figure out.
Rush is an outstanding band as proven by their longevity and success. A myriad fans can't be wrong.

I don't give a damn about the voice. Rush's musical material simply is not original enough to interest me, at least not what I have heard of them, and I was sent a few examples after having uttered that the examples in the database don't impress me. None of these examples impressed me either. I personally think that the "hard rock" label with which they were marketed in Germany suits them best.

Rush is great and better than ELP, but shouldn't GG be one of these bands? After all, Rush came a few years after the rest of these guys.
