Not really, I've acquainted one of my friends with Jethro Tull (although admittedly that's on the more accessible side of prog) and I know a bunch of people who are Opeth fans. Although, when people ask me what my favourite band is, they won't have heard of King Crimson. That isn't really "awkward" though.
I also tried introducing a girl to Peter Hammill, that was interesting...

Probobly the easiest way to get someone into prog is to start on the heavy-prog side, with stuff like Rush or Uriah Heep.

Most of my friends don't listen to prog, but whenever i play it they can appreciate it, and understand why I would want to listen to it. The secret to getting someone into prog isn't to play a specific band (although it helps) it's to play them prog when they're in the right mindset for it. I know there are times when i will not listen to prog and I'll listen to dance music for a whole week. You can't go to a party, throw on some King Crimson and expect everyone to "get" the music.
So I've never felt alienated because I listen to prog, but I've never put myself in the position to feel that way either.

I've done the same, but with Magma. I don't know what I was thinking (or smoking, perhaps). Needless to say, it didn't turn out too well. And the last "date" I went on (so long ago ) involved the girl coming to my house, all I can say is I wish I took a picture of the look on her face when she saw my record player and tons of cds/vinyls.

I can't think of a better way to ruin a romantic situation than by putting on Magma.
|
It wasn't a romantic situation, just me being random. These are different people and besides, if the girl actually liked Magma (what are the chances?) it would really turn me on

Sometimes. But normally no because what can I do if I love it?
I can say here:"I Like what I Know", and the "know" here is prog of course. But some people become interested.

ughhh, That whole Indie scene is disgusting, it's just a bunch of skaters thinking they are too good for a record label (and too self richeous to stay off the weed ), and make underground pop music. |
Shuddup, there is more to indie than that, besides all music is to good for record labels, and I havn't known many prog fans that have not done weed, after all isn't prog just pretentious rock music. |
No, indie is often way more pretentious than prog. Look up what pretentious actually means instead of using it because you've heard prog called it before. Look at the definition of prog on this website and you'll get a better definition than anywhere else.

What would be even harder would be to find the sexiest prog band... hmm... Well, uhhh... Gentle Giant! Picture making love to Knots! Oh jeezuz! No, don't, please don't.
But really; it's Caravan or PFM or sumthin' like that... I should start a poll

Look, I was responding to a blatant ubased insult on indie with a blatant ubased insult on prog in order to show the ridiculesness of the prior comment, I'm sorry that you felt you had to bash my post, especially one that is so old. I have seen the f**king defonition of prog before and I know what pretentious means. Yes indie can be pretentious but thats not the point. Hell the whole post-rock scene grew out of indie, so pease don't insult it.

Amen to that. prol. Besides, what's wrong with a little pretentiousness in music? Both genres are amazing and diverse. You can't write either off. Also, I know many indie/prog fans that don't smoke, myself being one of them.
