Topic: Depressing albums Posted: February 06 2008 at 22:56 |
I am in a situation where I like this girl a lot, but she doesnt like me. I need some albums that reflect these feelings. They dont have to be progressive at all, just quiet, and depressing like some singer/songwriter thing possibly. Thanks

Depressing, eh? Ever hear of a band called Radiohead? Go with Kid A.

Can't go wrong with Pain of Salvation's Remedy Lane and Perfect Element Pt. 1.
Fish-era Marillion is good for relationship troubles, IMO, but Brave is depressing too,

Yes. Can't do better than that.
VDGG come close though. Another great band that has written songs that fit exactly what I feel. Perhaps H To He...or Still Life tp begin.
Peter Hammill also fits the bill.

I agree with the Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane recommendation. That's about the best you can do.
If I may say a select few songs,
Dream Theater - "Space-Dye Vest"
U2 - "One"
Queen - "Too Much Love Can Kill You"
Porcupine Tree - "Trains"

Skip the singer/songwriter style, go with:
Univers Zero - Heresie
Shub Niggurath - Les Morts Vont Vite
Present - Triskaidekaphobie
Fantômas - Delerium Cordia
and of course, Scott Walker's two latest!

"Over" by Peter Hammill is THE album for you, though it looks at a relationship from its end, while yours has not even started. but the general feeling is pretty much the same

You need Leonard Cohen. Badly. Also, "collapse the light into earth" by Porcupine tree and "La Rossa" by VDGG. But really, you should get some Leonard Cohen. Especially "Songs of Love and Hate", it is dark. Dark. Not even Bj's dark chamber prog recommendations can measure up to the darkness of Leonard Cohen when he really gets down to it.

Pain of Salvation- Remedy Lane, The Perfect Element Pt. 1 (to a lesser extent)
a lot of Awake by Dream Theater deals with similar feelings though you're probably familiar with it by now
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream
Van der Graaf Generator- Pawn Hearts
Opeth- Blackwater Park

Both CDs by Blackfield should do well as a shoulder to cry on. Lotsa stuff about relationships along with excellent music and vocals.

if you wanna try post-rock (might be a stretch), f#a#infinity is one of the most desolate albums ever recorded. In fact, Godspeed You! Black Emperor (with the exception of parts on Lift your Skinny Fists) is a pretty bleak band across the board.

The ultimate song for me is:
Megadeth - In my Darkest hour
It's metal, but pretty calm (except the wild&fast ending)

Lots of PTree/Radiohead/Pineapple Thief I guess.
Though my personal preference would have to be Paatos' Timeloss. There's just something about that one.

pelican - australasia
Completly instrumental metal, and it depresses the hell out of me for some reason. Lots of repetition, minor chords, ect.
Edit: NIN - The Downward Spiral. That was my preteen angst album, and it still kicks me.

Blackfield would do some really good things for you.
Anatema's Alternative 4 and Judgement can bring you to tears if you connect with it.
Porcupine Tree's Lightbulb Sun is their most melancholic out of the whole catalogue.
The ultimate will definately be 'Remedy Lane' by Pain of Salvation, one of the most emotional albums of all time.
